TooLow, I was looking at that plane as well. I wonder if it's a close copy of the discontinued GP model. I can't tell for sure, but it looks like a couple of screws holding down the horizontal stab with some big washers. I'll be watching this to see what a first-hand experience reveals.

RE: Nitro DR1 tri-plane

I have a GP DR-1 and it is a lot larger than this one. In fact it is a huge streach to call this one a .90 size. A .70 four stroke at most. The GP one said a .70 was max but it flies nicely with a .91 four stroke. It weighed over 8 pounds finished and it was built light. I doubt the Nitro one really weighs 6.6 pounds finished, especially since it looks to be made of plywood VS balsa in the GP version.

It really looks weird flying without a pilot, you will need a 1/5 scale pilot for this. I suspect you will need wheels as well. They look like they may be a bit small, and they don't seem to want them to show in the photo's. You will need very large wheels with the stock undercarrage as the wheels take the shock and the undercarriage is solid with little spring.

Got my red one in the mail a week ago, nice model for the money. Airframe weighs 4lb 6oz. Cowl is longer than scale, and stab IS held on with 3 screws into blind nuts. I think a good 60 2stroke will fly it fine. Got a Great Planes 1/5 German WW1 pilot from Tower Hobbies, and it looks great, but he needs about 1 1/4ins amputated off the bottom of his chest to appear correct. Look closely at the two different colors of models, they are built slightly different, ie: firewall, stab.

Flyboyhobbies carries this plane also in black...I saw it at the Toledo show.
i used to have a GP Dr.1 and loved it.
I think there may be some issues with the firewall on this plane which might explain that long cowl. The gP version had an inverted box to help solve the problem.
good luck and hope to hear how she flies! [)]

one thing I noticed is the red one and Blk and yellow one look like they are made by different factories, The red one has the cockpit wood with covering and the yellow is a plastic piece. and there other differences you can see in there photo. wonder if they both fly the same or wich one is better. The red one looks better built to me but a pic only tells so much. Also I just noticed the scalloping on the wings is much different and the yellow one has it on the landing gear wing and the red does not, Actually the wings are completely different between the two planes but they both have the same specs.

The instructions for the black/yellow one look like typical CMP directions, so does the light ply fuse.

My son ordered a red one but a black one showed up instead. He ordered red based on the same observations you had as to the differences, but when we inspected the contents of the box it appears that the two are in fact identical in construction. I will pass this thread on to him so that he can put in his two cents when he starts the build. my own brief observation is that it is about what you would expect in this price range and will challenge those who need more than a few photos and uni-language diagrams for instructions.

Couldn't resist...had to spring for one! Black & Yellow arrived yesterday, but the fuselage is built as shown in the above photos like the RED one! Oh well, no biggie, we all know what to expect (or not to expect)...it's like rolling dice :)

Never built (ahemmm...assembled) a triplane, may I ask which wing is used for the CG?

RE: Nitro DR1 tri-plane

may I ask which wing is used for the CG?
The top wing. About half the wing back or 1/3 between the top wing leading edge and the bottom wing trailing edge on the GP DR-1.

RE: Nitro DR1 tri-plane

Thank you for the reply Sport Pilot. Very interesting that all three wings combined can be thought of as "One", and use 1/3 of the overall!

The purpose of the long engine box is to counter act the weight of the servoe's and wire's, If the tail sevo's are moved up front, You might be able to cut the box off and mount engine directly on the firewall, Just a thought, Here's my GP version.

That makes sense! Nice job on your Triplane john cirri! Are the outboard wing braces stock? They look strong.

Yes they are, Eveything is stock, I copyed the one From up at Rhinebeck NY, ST 90 for power, about 25 flights, I'm about a week from finishing my cox/pica Waco 1/6 bipe, Then i'll order the NM dr1, Thanx

RE: Nitro DR1 tri-plane

Can someone post the dimensions of the firewall? I am wondering if a 26cc BCMA motor would fit under the cowling. Yes I know the motor is over kill but I know a DR1 needs a lot of nose weight so why not just put a larger motor to make up the weight.

Taken from inside the triangular stock:

3 1/2" Wide
3 3/4" High

4" From firewall to front of cowl.

If you are not already aware, these Tripes sport two different firewall arrangements. The dimensions listed here for you are from the style that IS extended outward ( As depicted in the earlier posted photo of the RED Triplane)

The black&yellow tripe showed up with the same firewall configuration as the red one and not as depicted by the earlier posted photo of the black&yellow version!
