.30 size Waco
 

I got one of these for Christmas.....anybody have any experience with this plane? Is a .30 four stroke enough engine? Any info would be appreciated.

I had one, good little airplane. Had a magnum .30 4C in it and it flew well. It wasn't unlimited vertical and it flew very scale. Took off in about 40 feet. Landing gear mount block is a little weak, broke mine twice and decided to get rid of it. It is a good plane for the money. Dump the wheel pants, as they only last one flight anyway.

I too may pick one of these up. I've never seen one fly but I have seen one sitting in the LHS completed. It seemed to weigh quite a bit. If I get one, I'll put a Saito 30 on it instead of the recommended Magnum.

Would someone measure the diameter of the cowl for me. I was thinking about this plane for a wankel I have sitting around.

i have one, has a magnum 32 2cycle, flies great, with this power plant it has unlimited vertical but will slow to a walk for landing. weighs 3 pounds exactly. kevin

I fly at the old Redding Sky Ranch off highway 273. Redding RC & Hobbies is an on-site hobby shop. Can't beat it. I'm usually there Saturdays and Sundays and weekdays after 5:00 during the summer. How bout' you?

I have one of these planes in the red @white finish I am going to fly it with a o.s.26 surpass. I put standard size servos in it for ele.&rudd. Im just waiting for a calm day to try it for its frist flight

MMallory... The cowl inside diameter is about 4.5". Using a Wankle for power would be a slick combination. Keep us posted....

I have one also , and as Flyindoc stated ,the landing gear area is weak, might want to peel the covering back and glass this area before you install the gear,, also i used a OS 26 surpass, a good engine ,but this plane needs more power, Go with a good 25 2 stroke. Mount the engine as far forward as possible,. I had to use a heavy hub to get mine to balance properly. Take offs are a bit tricky, try to fly on a calm day, mine didnt like the wind at all. Easy to land, very good roll rate, fair to not so good , on all other aerobatics
--, this plane requires 5 MICRO servos , be prepared to spend over a 100 bucks, if you dont already have some

Thanks, I think I will order one today. If this plane flew with an OS .26, it will be unlimited with the wankel.

I finally flew this plane with the Wankel. The plane needed nose weight even though the wankel is a heavy engine. I spaced the engine forward more than a inch to put the prop in the proper location. Hindsight being 20/20, I would have put the battery under the tank instead of at the leading edge of the wing. Micro servos are needed for the wings. You can get away with standards for everything else. Weight came out to 3.75 lbs. Overall flight impression is excellent. This little plane handles the wind and tracks like a much larger plane would. There are no bad flight habits that I could find other than the existing hardware for the ailerons took a little work to get rid of the binding. The cowl design does not allow for enough cooling for the Wankel, so out comes the dremel tonight. It has very good vertical, however it is not unlimited. This could be because of the cooling issue. All in All a very nice inexpensive bi-plane.

I have a new .40LA sitting around begging for a home. Would this be to much for this plane? I have looked at the size/weight compared to the .30 4 stroke and there is no considerable difference. All advice would be greatly appreciated!!!

I have a 30 Waco.The first engine I had in it was a 30 Magnum 4 stroke It was not enough power with this moter.I put in a OS 40 LA with a slimline Pitts_style muffler and it flys great unlimited verticle with this moter and did NOT have to add weight to the plane to balance.

I've got the grey black version with a GMS.32,hitec hs-81's and a fma lightweight reciever.This combo has what I would call rocket powered vertical.I thought for sure that this small bipe was going to fly like all the other's I've ever tried.This thing fly's great,tracks like it's on rails,very precise in any manuevers and slows down very nicely for landing.The only problem I have is it likes to ground loop,it ends up on it top 8 out of 10 landings.But its such a lite little airplane that nothing usually happens.I would highly suggest this plane,too much fun and the biggest plus is you dont have to disassemble it and assemble it at the field.

I have 5 Hitec Hs81 servos and a Hitec 555 recever you can put standered servos in it but you have to go with 2 mini for the wing .its a good flying plane with the 40 la.

I have just built a Waco 30 and have NO experience with bipes
the directions say the Center Of Gravity is 20MM forward of the
leading edge of the lower wing. Make this mark on the top wing and hold the aircraft with the top wing to locate CG? Why couldn't
they just give you the CG on the top wing? Can some one please give me in INCHES the CG of the waco 30 from the top wing leading edge? Thanks in advance. :confused:

Bill,

I think we all just eyeballed the measurement. I guess they don't give a top wing measure due to variations in building. If you really want to be on the money, just set the plane on a table with the wings a 0 degrees (block the tail up). Use a square or a piece of paper butted up to the LE of the bottom wing. Make a mark on the top wing and measure your 20mm from there.
