Goldberg Ultimate ARF tips?
Anyone with a Goldberg Ultimate ARF who would care to share any tips before I assemble mine?
Would a Saito 100 be plenty of power? Would it balance OK with the Saito 100, which is fairly lightweight? |
Goldberg Ultimate ARF tips?
I've done 2, and the plane is very easy to assemble. The only "trick" I guess is to remove the covering below the firewall to install the front cabane mount in the fuse. Once the cabane is in the rest is simple. I replaced the bolts that mount the top wing to the cabane with 1 inch bolts to make it easier to get them started. Drip some thinned epoxy in the top wing to sure up where the cabane bolting plate attaches to the wing. The Saito 100 should be a great engine for this plane. My first had a 91FX and was very light, but lacked the pull I wanted. The one I have now has a Webra 120 and pulls like a beast, but is heavier by 1/2 a pound. The Saito should fall somewhere between. Good luck.

Great information TailTwister. Thank you very much. Exactly the kind of information I was hoping for.
What about balance? Will need nose weight with the 19 ounce Saito 100? Thanks again! |
Goldberg Ultimate ARF tips?
i have one with a ys 1.20. awesome flier. with the ys it balanced a little nose heavy but i was able to move my battery so i didn't have to add any weight. as tailtwister said removing the covering below the fire wall is a must to aid in attaching the cabanes to the aircraft. also on the top wing mounting bolts, the ones that attach the wing to the cabane, i assembled it and the used jb weld to "weld" the nuts to the cabanes to ease and speed up assembly at the field. only complaint is the mostly solid blue covering, tough to see on a nice day so make sure you do something to the top or bottoms of the wings. it has awesome flying characteristics for a bipe, not squirrely like a pitts, i however would look for a engine with a little more power than the saito 100. good luck

Thanks DV8. I wondered about the Saito 100 and that's why I asked. Any suggestions about and engine other than the YS120?
Did you mount your engine sideways, like in the instructions, or inverted? Seems like inverted would look nicer than hacking a big hole in the side of that pretty cowl. THanks again. |

KAT,
I put a Saito 150 on mine and it's awsome. Vertical to out-of-sight! I put the receiver and battery where suggested and it balanced right on the mark. BTW, I didn't remove the bottom covering until AFTER I attached the front cabane - what a pain! Also, I mounted the 150 sideways - remember - you need to have a way to get cooling air OUT of the cowl too. Randy |

To balance with my 91 I had the battery by the fuel tank. I put no lead anywhere. With the Webra the battery is in the cockpit. Since flying it for a season, I've put lead on the tail to suit my flying taste. I'll probably move a servo or two to eliminate the lead. For most pilots (NOT 3D PILOTS) the Saito 100 will probably be fine. For vertical performance like a slingshot you may want more juice. With the Webra I can take off in 3 feet and do snaps on the way up until it's gone. It hovers just a click below 1/2 throttle. Thats all on an APC 16x6 at about 9400 (full bore) or so. Take a look at your flying taste and choose your motor based on that. For me there is never enough power. For most of a day I tried to talk myself into cramming my O.S. 1.60 in it. It was just too big.

I fly mine with a Saito 150, ditto what the other guys said about the cabanes but I didn't cut a hole in mine. I can fit it in the wagon all together, big plus. I would add a small piece of lite ply inside of the wheel pant on the outside axle hole, so the weight won't be on the fiberglass. I fly from grass. I also put some triangle stock on the firewall.
I did crash mine and broke it all to pieces and got to see how the whole thing is put together. The wings were the best part. Reinforced with fiberglass in the center. The fuse was the weakest part. It came apart at all the glue joints. There really wasn't that much glue in it. Its glued well now! Mine is probably a bit heavy but its plenty fun. |

yup i got that big ys hangin out the side. absolutely love the engine performance. throttle response is out of this world. the saito 100 will be fine. have heard of them with ys .91's which keep it light and plenty of power. .91fx or webra 1.20 also excellent choices...i am biased though, don't care for saitos, it's just a ford-chevy thing

Please tell me that it's not necessary to remove the covering under the firewall for a reason other than to install the cabanes, because I managed to install the cabanes without removing the covering. I guess I love pain, but I used the old "CA the nut to the finger" trick to get the nuts started, and then one of those tiny "toy" adjustable end wrench's to tighten them. It was tricky, but not as tricky as some of the stuff I've done on tiny electric airplanes.
I'm really starting to like this airplane, and it's pretty dog gone nice looking, but the junction of the "dorsal" part of the fin and the fuselage is butt ugly. I may have to get some blue Ultracote and do something there..... Thanks for all the tips and suggestions. |

Don't cut if you don't have to...I didn't everyone else is just wimps ;)

Goldberg Ultimate ARF tips?
Kat,
You're right. Once you have the cabanes attached, the only reason you might want to take the bottom covering off is to make tank installation a bit easier - you can really see what you're doing. But.... since you're going to get some blue Ultracote to fix the fin-fuse joint anyway,........ Randy |

I have the kit not the ARF with a Saito 150 inverted. It was side mounted at one time. Inverted is a much cleaner look with more air over the engine for cooling. I always move radio equipment to balance instead of adding dead weight. Just do it before mounting permanently.

Barry,
What muffler do you use? my 150 is side mounted as I am using a slimline pitts. It doesn't slime the plane bad at all. |

If possible at all a touch of yellow on bottom of the plane helps with orientation. I also added a yellow stripe across the top wing with the BLUEHAWK lettering. The full scale had this and the kit plans show where it goes. However, only two stickers are given. I barganed myself another from a friend with the same plane. The blue coloring needs to be "broken up" in the sky a bit. Also, I'm not a 100% whimp. I put my first one together without cutting the covering. By the time I did my second one I had heard the tip and "whimped out". I was done with the step in 10% of the time the first one took. My Dad always said, "If you want to know the easy way to do something... Ask a lazy man to show you." Maybe he meant a whimp... Anyway if you can also seal all hinge lines to maximize control authority, and fly it like you stole it! Knife edge snaps 10 feet off the deck are a real crowd pleaser. Have a blast.

Good idea! I forgot I added yellow to the top of the plane also. I could help with the Bluehawk lettering if you really want it. I have a sign shop and already cut it for mine so I wouldn't have to use the one piece decal

Yepper. I sealed the aileron hinge gaps and I'm gonna seal the tail feather hinge gaps.
I will positively add some kind of trim to provide visibility since I'm no eagle eye :) Are there any compelling reasons why not to mount the engine inverted? I went with a YS91. I realize glow plug access will be difficult, but I would probably go with a remote glow plug hookup if I go inverted. |
Goldberg Ultimate ARF tips?
RC Jones, I use the stock muffler on the 150. By cleaner I just meant the cowl sides not being cut at all. As far as reasons not to mount inverted I suppose if someone tries hard enough they could come up with something. I also use a remote glow attachment.

Help!!!
Does anyone have the "elevator wire drawing" that they can scan and email me, or FAX to me? I bought my Ultimate NIB at a swap show, and I inspected it closely and found everything still in sealed plastic bags, but I didn't know anything about a "elevator wire drawing" at the time, and I don't have one.
My email address is [email protected] My FAX is 740-321-4028 TIA |

Kat,
I looked for mine but must have pitched it when finished. If no one else can help, I'll bet Goldberg would fax you a quick copy. Randy |

Elevator Pushrod Drawing
Kat,
I've got the drawing and can fax it to you if you still need it. I'm going to go with two elevator servos on my Ultimate, so won't be setting the elevator up according to the drawing. Looks like you are a few steps ahead of me - I just bolted my new Saito 100 on. So far, I am impressed with the CG Ultimate ARF - can't wait to fly it! If you still need the drawing faxed to you, email me at [email protected] |
Goldberg Ultimate ARF tips?
Yes, please fax it to me SearchMan. I just sent you an email.
Thanks!!! |

let me know if you still need the drawing. I would by happy to fax it. Your username cought my attention. I Love Nepal but I guess your using it for another reason |
Goldberg Ultimate ARF tips?
I must thank SearchMan for faxing me the drawing twice, (since I posted the wrong fax number initially). Hats off to SearchMan and al of you great online R/C folks. Try as I may, it seems that I will never repay the online community.
wbrian: Thank you too for the offer! I just figured out what you mean about Nepal. Although I spell it incorrectly, I am KatManDEW because my initials are DEW, and I'm a seroius "trophy" catfisherman. (the reason for the "KatMan" part), and the only other live creature in my house is that 25 pound tabby cat that is my avitar. Here's a picture of me and one of my aquatic friends... Don E.
