DP Ultimate engine....

....has any used the recommended YS 1.20 in their
Ultimate ? I noticed most everyone is leaning more
towards the 1.40 YS, and the 1.60 OS.
I have a 1.20 YS set aside for mine....but I am now
getting a bit sceptical with the weight, and power.

Has anyone flown with the 1.20....? :) What were
the results....? I don't need the most powerful plane
on the planet to enjoy the beauty of the Ultimate....
but on the other hand, I don't want to dog it out either.

Dave. :)

I have a friend that has this combo. His has a YS 120FZ on it with a smoke system. I have flown the plane and it flies great! It has plenty of power it will go vertical forever. I haven't tried to hover it but I am sure it will do it.

We fly at 6200 feet elevation so if your elevation is lower you will even have more power. He uses Powermaster YS 20/20 fuel.

You could go with a different engine for more power but I don't think you will need any more power unless you are really into 3D flying.

Try your YS120 you will love it!!

Altitude and the ultimate

Hey,
My ultimate (depending on sandy's efficiency) should be comming in soon and i Fly at about 5800 feet. How does this plane perform, and do you think an os 1.60 FX would be a good 3d motor for this? I have had a hard time getting engines the right size for 3d at this altitude. Thanks.

A 160 would be good.... I think you would be happier with a YS 140 L or DZ. If high operating costs concern you then go with the 160. As far as the plane.... it is AWESOME!!! Your going to LOVE it! I have 2 of them. Be patient with Dave and Sandy.... they are great people. They just have a lot to do for a staff of 2.

Do you think the vertical would be unlimited? Anyways, Sandy sent my plane out last week, so i should be getting it soon. Thanks again.

well ill tell u what
i have the DP ultimate
very nice well flying plane
i have the os 160 in it
it flys it but were not talking about ripping the ultra coat off of it
i wish it had a lil more power
but it might just be that i have a weak 160 seems to only wanna run when its kinda fat
but the plane is just a really nice plane
i think a saito 180 would be more of a powerplant of choice
just for the pure grunt power
but also think of what type of flying ur going to do if ur just ganna cruz then the power plant isnt going to be that criticle(<sp?)
but if ur ganna fly it slow and low, with the nose pointed to the sky, motor choice , i belive the saito 180 would be the answer

On your 160..... cut the tips off of the muffler where it closes down (if your running a Bisson) and run a Cline or a Perry pump. Get yourself a good 18x8 prop... Mezjlick, APC or MA Scimitar and let her run 8500 - 8800 on the ground. That will perk it up. Get some 15% Omega to run in it. The Saito is a good choice but uses alot more fuel then a 160 fx. I pulled my Saito 180 off mine and put a YS 140 DZ on it. I am very satisfied now.

Hey, a guess would be great.... I am looking to get my airplane hovering at about 1/2 throttle. Any chance the 160 FX would do? I plan to use this plane for 3d. I cant afford the Ys 140 Dz. THanks again everyone

The OS 1.60 FX should be able to do it with an 18x6 prop. I would use a menz standard for 3D. Available at desert Aircraft.

There are 2 DZ's in the glow for sale forum. The guys is asking $525. I got mine for $500. You can find great deals on YS 140L's too if you look. They would be killer as well. They burn less then the Saito 180 and are smoother. This plane really does deserve the best.

Where do you guys get all your money and why is it so important to make an airplane do what it ain't supposed to do?

I am currently using a YS 140 Sport on my DP Ultimate and it is MORE than enough power for the plane. With an 18x6 prop and coolpower 30, this is almost too much engine for the plane. I can tell you that the plane also flies great on a 120FZ. The FZ has quite a bit more power than the older NC, SF, etc. I wouldn't go with a 120 unless it were the newer FZ. For the price, however, I replaced the engine with the 140 Sport since it was just over $400 from central hobbies and has the same power as the 140L on my Goldberg Sukhoi. I use the same prop and fuel and both engines are within a hundred RPM of each other. If you have access to one, however, I would definitely consider going with a 120FZ as it will also fly this plane great and allow you to hover at just over 1/2 throttle.

My DP (now deceased) had a YS120 and it was plenty of power. It would hover at about 2/3 throttle and do anything I was capable of. 140's are great but if you have the 120 set aside, definitely use it, I think you won't be disappointed. An APC 16-8 seemed to be a good match on 20/20 fuel. (It's surprisingly fast for a bipe).

Flyboy Dave 05-20-2003 05:19 PM

Yes, it is the FZ....

....I think I'll go with it....thanks fellas.... :D

It doesn't have to have unlimited verticle....as long
as it will do "monster loops"....I'll be happy. I really
get a kick out of just flying a Bipe past me, at half
throttle....and enjoying the beauty of a Biplane in
flight.... ;)

If that's the case, you'll LOVE it with the YS 120. Good Luck!!!

So go with the perry pump then? I am using a 1.60 FX, and need some advice on what i can expect. I live at 5800 ft, so any experience would be greatly appreciated. thanks.
