Ultra Stick 120 Servo's????
 

I just picked up a new H9 Ultra Stick 120 - I am planning on going with the four flap option. I will be running a Zenoah G23 on it and was wondering how much torque I need out of my servos. I keep seeing where people mention 70oz/in is good for .60 sized planes... how about a 120???? How much torque do I really need on the control surfaces?

I saw a web site that recommended 110 oz/in on the elevator! That sounds a little extreme to me... what are your experiences?

I've learned a few things in the past few hours about servo torque. I'm still curious what rating is considered nominal for moderate flying on this model. With four servos on the wing I can't see needing a TON of torque out of each servo but I don't really have any REAL WORLD experience with a 120 sized flying machine.

My understanding is that the G23 is a little under powered for a 120. That's ok - I'm not trying to break air speed records or pull 2000 ft verts from hover. Thus the servo torque load shouldn't be as much with a lower air speed.

I will probably reduce the throw on all the control suraces to see if a 70oz/in torque servo gets any blow back... if not then I might increase the throw steadily until I find out where the load matches what the servo's can put out.

I think you're on the right track, I'm presently flying a Stinger 120 with a Moki 1.8 using Standard Airtronics servos on 6 Volts. Everybody says I can't do that. It's kind of like the bumblebee that aerodynamically can't fly. Tell that to the bumblebee. :cool:

FWIW, I had 537's on the quad flaps running on 6 volts, worked fine. You will not have a speed demon on your hards powering it with a G23.

My 1st Ultra Stick 120 with Quad flaps had Hitec HS-422s in the wing and HS-425s for rudder and elevator. That plane flew fine with an OS FX 1.60 on the nose.

My current Ultra Stick 60 has HS-425s in the wing and HS-605s for rudder and elevator with a Saito FA-100 on the nose. I fly this bird very dynamic, much more than I did the 120, and this servo configurations works just fine.

Recommendation: IMHO you don't need more than the HS-425s in the wing and the HS-605s for rudder and elevator should be sufficient for this airplane with a G23 on the nose. If you plan on pushing this thing around the sky heavilly (not very likely with the G23) then switch to HS-645s in the fuselage.

I had 4 Hitec 425s in the wing and Hitec 605s for the rudder and elevator. Two seasons and hundreds of flights with no problem, sold it last fall.

I wonder if the G-26 will be much of an improvement on the 120 Stik....anyone try one yet?

Of all the reading I've been doing everyone seems to say that the 4 Strokes are better (performance wise) on the UltraStick but if you want to save $$$ on fuel and have less maintenance issues... go with a G-26

I happened to have a new G-23 on the workbench (loooong story), so I decided to go with what I have. I really like slow motion flying anyways. Something about going really fast into the ground does not appeal to me.

That G23 or the G26 will not turn that bird into a high-performance Cap but they are not what I would call sluggish either. They will still move that plane around fast enough to keep you from getting bored.

I had one with a G-23 and loved it....yep, not a barn burner, but CHEAP to fly - and fly all day with it - also put a Saito 180 on, LOT more fun and accordingly....MORE $$$$$ - can you say 6-7 flights per gallon!!!!

Glad to hear that! This is my first gasser, I don't think I want a scream machine to start with.

I love the way the UltraStick can come off the ground in just a few feet and land at a walking pace. Why load this baby up with tons of power if you have a plane that doesn't need it.

To each his own... I think I've chosen a perfect slow poke flyer. Just so as long as it's not TOOOOOO SLOW.

Jerry, I took the G23 off of mine and put a Fugi 32 on it. We have vertical now. From some of the numbers I have seen the G26 is pretty close to the Fugi.

I just finished my Ultra Stick 120 and flew it for the first time today. I have four Futaba 3003's in the wing, Futaba 3003 on throttle, Hitec hs-645 on elevator, and a Hitec hs-605 on the rudder. All on a 6volt 1400 pack. I put a Zenoah g-38 on the nose swinging an 18X6-10. Vertical?...oh yea!

I've never seen an Ultra Stick with the rudder and elevator servo's mounted like that before. That's a good idea. Where did you get the idea?

I'd imagine the servo's should work more efficiently that way and you put some much needed weight on the tail at the same time. I might just go that route myself.

I got the idea here on RCU. I was going to put a g-38 on a 4*120 and saw people were putting the servos in the tail, so I figured why couldn't I do that with the US120.
I didn't have to add any "dead" tail weight to balance, just the two servos and battery pack. As for the flying weight, the manual states it should be 12 to 14 lbs. Mine weighs in at just under 14 lbs.
