Problem with kids is they learn fast! A lot of the top heli/plane champions are in their early teens. You don't want to get him a trainer. You want something he won't outgrow. Personally I like fun flies to train people on. They have awesome low speed characteristics due to the fat wing, yet they can do ANYTHING aerobatic wise if you set up the throws as such. So defnietely spend the little extra money on something that has a radio that can be used for future aircraft. If you want RTF.. I suggest this:

If he has no place to fly nitro:

The 3S lipo batts that these use give reasonable flight times/price, and can be used on other neat 11.1v 3s aircraft/heli's if he ever gets into it. The radio is good for many reasons. Not many 6 channel radios have expo on the throttle and duel rates/expo on the rudder. Great to grow into if you ever wish you had it. The Typhoon can be very gentle throwing in a lot of expo on low/high rates. Also buddy box compatible with other JR radios. AND the receivers are 49 bux for park fliers and 79 bux for full range. If you think this is too hot then this:

The Trojan will do basic aerobatics and uses the same batts.

The Typhoon can be a docile flyer if the rates are turned down.

This has to be done mechanically though, so it may pay to have someone experienced look it over. Someone needs to provide some training before he/she can use it.

Once experienced, it's a blast.

The Trojan is also an excellent 4channel plane, and suitable as well as long as some handholding ( training from an instructor ) is involved.

Here's an easy beat down of the Hobbyzone Supercub...

[link=http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXKVY7&P=0]Click me![/link]

It's virtually indestructable... has a full 4 channels, and can 3D too when maxed out on the rates.

It will hold interest for quite a while and could indeed be flown in a large yard.

The Supercub however DOES get blown around in 2-4 MPH winds... I've seen people loose them because of this at our airfield!

I have this model and it is a ball too fly, but not something that I would recommend to a beginner. Remember, the beginners that can pick up the Tx and fly a model like this are somewhat rare. Also, the additional $200 worth of stuff needed to make this thing fly could come as a surprise to some purchasers.

I like mine, but it isn't fair comparing it to a RTF $100 model. It does kick the snot out of the Nexstar. 8>)

(The model that came up when I clicked the URL was an all flexi foam Yak 55 3D model)
