Global freestyle elevator pushrod
I just flew my freestyle for the first time today. When pulling out of a loop at about 3/4 throttle (w/os .46fx) the plane took a wild turn one way until speed was slow and the flew straight again. This plane is set up with a pull-pull system on the rudder. The elevator is in two separate pieces controlled by one pushrod that is split at the tail and each end joins onto the horn on each side of the elevator. I am obviously coming up against too much pressure against the elevator when it is pulled up, but I don't hear anyone here talk about changing anything on their freestyles. I guess what I'm asking is could there be something I could check first before pulling out the pushrod and installing a pull-pull system in the elevator? Anyone with comments would be appreciated. It could be one of a few things.
1. Flex. See if you can see where it is flexing. 2. Uneven movement. If the pushrod is way off center where it attaches to the servo, it could cause one elevator to move more than another (so at center, everything is fine, but at each extreme, you'll see one elevator move more than the other) 3. You simply have too much throw and you're stalling the plane. Hope this helps. -Mike |

Sounds to me like a differential problem...
Check to see that both elevators move the same amount when twiddling the sticks. Either way it's snapping out, how big was the loop you were trying to pull? |

I don't have the throws set very high. The rod is connected in one of the holes that is furthest out on the horn and my computer radio is set at 60% ATV. The flexing is what I think is wrong, but why would they give me that pushrod in the ARF if it won't even work on low rates? I do need to look and see if my servo is operating close to center as well. I just think the surface is too big and the force of the air is too much for that pushrod. thanks for the replies. If anyone has any more suggestions about what I can do as far as new hardware to fix the problem that would be great.

I had one of these until a mid air RIP. The elevator pushrod that mine had was fine. Assuming they didn't change the pushrod during a later production run yours should be fine too.
The plane does have a habbit of snapping with too much elevator, it can be a very scary thing if you're not expecting it. Next time you're out flying try going straight and level at 1/2 throttle (up high) and yanking full elevator and you'll see what I mean. The plane is notorius for this, otherwise a great plane. |

No problems with mine on low rates or high rates. May be your servo or setup, or the pushrod with your kit may not have been constructed properly.

Elevator Pushrod
After looking at mine I did not consider using it. Used a Dave Brown fiberglass one instead, with 4-40 pushrods and hardware. Sounds like over kill but the elevator halves were locked together. My $.02.

I use fibreglass or carbon arrow shafts for all my pushrods..
i don't muck about. Orangeman, Check everything and make sure your CG isn't to far aft. Also make sure that you're not having the elevators flutter... I'd be more inclined to re set the servo arm so you have 100 atv and a short arm. This will increase the resolution of the servo and make it more powerful by mechanical advantage. |

I use a Dave Brown fiberglass rod with 4-40 pushrods (yes, its overkill but I'm an aggressive flyer).
I believe I had a similar experience. Sometimes I like to vent my frustrations in life and "yank" my controls around (gotta love those corners). I noticed that if you do an aggressive loop, it will snap out rather abruptly; but if you ease into the loop it will be fine (as tight as I want without snapping out). Not sure I explained it correctly but I hope you understand my intention, hopefully it will help you resolve your issue... |
