Pitts or Ultimate
I've got an OS 91 Surpass 4 stroke looking for a home. Would like to put in Ultimate or Pitts. Any suggestions. How about feedback on Carl Goldberg Ultimate kit or arf.
Thanks Duke |
Pitts or Ultimate
I've had two ULT. kits from Goldberg and flow about 4 others. This is a great airplane. It is easyer
to build than a lot of single wing aircraft. It is also the best plane I have found to knife edge. I don't know anything about the ARF. The Pitts is more scale looking than the ULT. buy I dont think it can out fly one.I noticed in the new Tower Talk the Goldberg ULT now comes with a glass cowl & pants. It would be my choice. later daveo |
Pitts or Ultimate
Having flown the ultimate in a few varieties and CG kits, I'd say if you do decide on the ultimate I personally would install the 1.20 4 stroke. A YS91 would work fine though.

How about a Dave Patrick Ultimate ARF. It's rated for 91 4 s. Anyone have experience with this plane?
Thanks Duke |

I have a Goldberg Ultimate ARF with a OS SF .61, it flys like a big old trainer. My favorite airplane. I just picked another one up from friend, this one was built from a kit, it has a OS FX 91 for power. Ive flown this one also, it does anything you can imagine. There are a couple differences between the two. The arf comes with one peice aluminum landing gear, while the kit has wire. And how they fasten the top wing to the center cabanes. I have seen the Dave Patrick Ultimate at a couple fly-ins. It is beautiful. Slighty bigger then the goldbergs. The guy who I bought the latests one from is getting one. Personally, I think the Ultimate is a much better looking airplane then the pitts, not saying the pitts is ugly. All bipes are kewl.

The Dave Patrick ARFS are EXCELLENT. A club member has one, and you couldn't build one yourself any better. It flys like a pattern plane really. I've seen hin set it down just as slow as a trainer. Although the controls were mushy at that speed, it didn't have any problems.

Gilligan and others,
I don't necessarily need stump pulling power so will my 91 4strock be adequate for either the goldberg or patrick? I really like both planes but don't want it to be so underpowered I risk damaging it. Thanks Duke |
Carl Goldberg Ultimate
An O.S. .91 is an excellent match for the goldberg ultimate. Keep it light and it will knife edge loop with that engine.
A saito 100 would be ideal. People nowadays are too tempted to put big heavy engines in everything. Keep the wing loading down and the power to weight up and you will be rewarded with a more pleasant flying ultimate. A Dave Patrick ultimate should have a 1.20. |

Duke I've built a few of these and would like to offer a little unsolicited advise for what it's worth.
When you first get the kit wet and roll up the rear turtle deck a little at a time. Once the 2 sides touch it will be the correct shape to put on the plane. Also use the scrape piece from around the rear deck as a template to cut your Monocoat. Please dont use the AILE setup shown on the planes. Put a servo in each half of the bottem wing. If you dont know how post back hear and I'll go into detail. Finally I lost one of these because the fin snapped in flight. Be sure to use some type of flat hinge on all the tail feathers. There is not a lot of wood to work with. Good luck , you will love this plane. later daveo |

Daveo,
Thanks for the advice.... I will be buying the ARF. I know.... I would much rather build the kit which I will start doing once I get time. I'm no spring chicken and have a full time plus job and going to college at night so have so little time as it is. Oh forgot the wife as well. I will be checking tail feathers though on arf. What are your takeoff tips. I have a couple low wing warbirds that require I keep them on the ground till I build up speed. Need to worry about this with the Ultimate? Also my first Bi-plane so know to keep speed up on final. Duke |

Take off is a breeze. It's the only tail dragger I've seen you can gas and go. It has so much verticle surface area
with the big rudder and wing strutts it's no problem. The one Im flying now is ST.90 powered. I roll it 20 feet at full power and point it straight up. You should have more grunt with yours so it should do the same. Dont fret the landings. I've flow a few warbirds and it's very simular. If anything the ULT is more stable because it wont tip stall. The wing loading is lighter than most war birds it just has more drag. I don't blame you for going ARF. If you look at my pic it's an ARF. I also have a Pizzaz,Tiger 2 and GEEBEE all ARFs. Not that I'm rolling in money but it's easyer to find money than time at my place.\ If you get north on a Sunday come fly with us. later daveo |

Daveo,
Thanks for the input. So your in North Texas! ha ha joke. Live in Houston so unfortunately it'll have to be a serious drive but thanks for invite. I'm so bittem by this plane now have to get check request from boss. Officiating for the game really did suck but as you mentioned it really didn't matter. Worst was the line judges, especially the two touchdown calls. Duke |

Good one Duke. Heard this one from another Texan. What keeps Texas from falling into the gulf?
Oklahoma Sucks. Anyway good luck with the ULT. later daveo |
