Suggestions for my CAP232
 

I just flew my Hanger 9 CAP 232 and it was fun. My only complaint was my 46FX only pulled 11.5k rpm and it wasnt up to par for me. I prefer a little speed as well and today it just didnt cut it. I wanted to ask if anyone else had the plane and what motor you would suggest for it?

I am thinking maybe a 61FX?

Diablo. . Just finished my Cap 232 and plan to fly it today, if the rain stops. I had two Saito engines on hand, the .56 and .72. Took the Saito .72 out of the Tiger2 and put the .56 back in as that was the first engine for that plane. The 72 is now in the Cap 232 and I ran it tonite to make my settings, and can't wait to fly it with that power. It has a 13x6 APC on it and I could fly the Tiger2 half throttle with ample power. I read some posts where guys ran this set-up on the Cap with good results. I think you would enjoy the Saito .56 as well, and would cost less. I also have an OS 61FX and would run that on the Cap if I did not have the Saito's available.

George you think the OS61fx would work as well? I was leaning towards that way as well becuase the price difference and they are easy to find used here. Will the 60fx fit under the cowl?


I agree the Saito 72 would work as well, I just ran into a friend who has the 40 sized Matt Chapman CAP and damn thats a great combo Not the fastest flying but it can haul around niceley.

I had the Kyosho 40 size cap with a Tiger Shark 75 in it weehaw!!Their 75 is as light as any 60 and might even be better on fuel than most.

Thats great to know. I found one online for sale but am not sure yet..what type of muffler did you use? I want to use a Pitss style on it as I have now on my 46fx.

I fly now with the 11X7 so ill try other props this weekend. Im just worried that moving to the 60 size still wont be enough for pulling and speed :(

I saw some Magnum 60's online pretty cheap so ill give them a shot.

11x7 doesn't get the 46 FX in its power band. What brand prop? Try APC 11x6 and rev at 13k+.

This plane at 6 lb. is a little heavy for a 40 size aerobat. You don't really want the extra 8 oz of the 61 FX. Instead, look into bored out engines that weigh the same as 40's, such as the Magnum 53, OS 50, Irvine 53,... I think Magnum 53 is the best value and most powerful of these.

Saito 120? Vibration and torque on this little plane is not worth the extra power, not to mention weight. It's good to overpower to some extent, but not to the point when you have to increase the weight by more than 10%, do major mod just to make it fit, and worry about prop ground clearance.

Mine flies great with an Irvine 53 and slimline pitts muffler!

But why would you want speed out of a CAP?

A Saito 100 would be the sweet spot I figure-

Diablo...Made three flights with my Cap today powered by the Saito 72. On taxi-out/taxi-in had to use FULL up elevator on a grass strip to keep from dropping the nose on throttle modulation.
On the maiden flight, as it built up speed the tail rose with such suddeness I barely saved it and yanked it off the ground before the 13" prop grounded out. Subsequent takeoffs I was ready for it and really enjoyed my flights.
The Saito 72 has impressive power and responds instantly to throttle changes. What impresses me about the plane is the sharp, clean moves doing the aerobatics I like. I know it would do impressive eight point rolls, if I was good at it. I made the biggest loop I have ever flown, and when I went level it tracked a straight line...no climbing or wing quiver.....However, I was not ready for the snaps. I had just gone to high rate on the ailerons, and I think(not sure, as it happened so fast) I banked left as I was running too far out...it did the cleanest snap roll. I said to my son, "I didn't do that!" I don't even know how I recovered, but it was scary. I can see, when I learn more how to fly this plane it is going to be fun.
As far as the .61FX, that should do the job nicely. Don't know if it will fit on the motor mount, so you may have to change that.

Im afraid I cant afford the Saito 72 so i might stick with a magnum 52 or something in that price range. I was considering the 60 size but seanychen
has a good point about the extra weight to performance difference an engine that big would produce.
