Seagull Ultimate biplane 90 size

Good morning all,I've got a Seagull Ultimate biplane, and two possible engines for it.My first choice is a well tested BCMA sport 26,it used to pull my USL 120 around pretty well, until I bought one of those CRRC pro 40 kits.My other choice is a brand new Saito 100 it has about a half gallon of fuel through it now on the test bench.I want enough power to do scale like aerobatics,I'm not good enough or into 3D.My USL 120 weighs about 10.5(probably more!!!) pounds so the BCMA 26 should be able to pull the Ultimate around pretty good at 9.2-10.6 pounds.Any thoughts?I would really like to hear from you guys who have used these engines in this size Ultimate.I have read all I could find here and over at RCG's.I didn't find any one who have used a gasser in this aircraft, some said they were thinking about it,but never said if they had.I'm really leaning towards the gasser,I love the ease(cheap)of gas power.

Thanks for any imput Jim.

I had a Saito 1.25 in one. For me it was underpowered. It would sport fly it fine. Most of my planes are 3D type and it just felt down on power. Hover for example would be 90% throttle. WIth a 1.00 I don't know if it would hover at all. Maybe mine was a heavy example but it was close to 13lbs. Way to much for a Saito 1.25. Your gasser might be a better option. If you go that route plane on moving the elev servos to the tail. This should help with the CG.

I have a Saito 125 on mine and it flies very well although I don't do 3d.Vertical climb is unlimited and for the type of flying that I do it is more than enough I usually fly at 2/3 throtle. If you plan to fly scale the 100 Saito would do.If you want a rocket i would use a 150 or 180 Saito or go to a 26 to 35 cc gas. I personally dont think the airframe would handle much over a 150. Hope that helps.....

Thanks guys,I'm going to go with the gasser.I really didn't want to use a slimer,no starters,no glo plugs, and no clean up!!!I've got all the dodads for the little gasser,so no additional cost either. All I've got to do is get it put together and go fly.

Thanks again Jim

Sounds like too much "down thrust" on the engine mount - install a washer between the engine mount and the firewall on the two lower mount points on the firewall to reduce the down thrust, and see if it flys better.

I just picked up one of these and was also planning on going with the 120ax. What size prop do you use and how does it fly?

thanks!

APC 17x6 on the prop. I switched back to the GB Ult and have the 1.20AX and APC 17x6 on it.

I have an OS 1.60FX in mine and it will nearly pull the airframe out of the Ultracote. I love it!

16x8. I have 3 of these and this seems to me to be the best all around prop for that engine. I like them. I have a Goldberg Ultimate (kit) with a Magnum 91 xls and it hauls. I have the Seagull with the 120ax and it flies, speedwise, more scale like. Good combo!

How much did you have to chop the cowl to fit the OS 120AX? IOW's will the OS 120AX fit inside the cowl w/o chopping?

It is a bit hard to answer in text, yes I had to cut the cowl a bit - mainly to allow the muffler to poke through.

It is better describe with a pic, have a look at the pic about half way down, and also how the 120-ax mounts and the next page.

How are your Ultimates flying with the engines you have chosen for them? I'm thinking about the new Evolution 1.20 for mine. I'm using the Evo 1.00NX on my Skyshark Edge 540 and really like how this engine runs. After it was broken in and tuned properly, it has a really smooth idle and very good transitions from idle to WOT.

Hey all,I know this thread is pretty well dead, but we maidened the Ultimate yesterday. All I can say is wow,to all who think a 26cc gas engine is not enough, your are wrong. The little BCMA26 sport is more than enough.I only wish the plane was still mine!!!For the price of this combo you can't go wrong.

I have a Saito 180 that needs a good home, will it fit in this plane?
