GP Wagstaff Extra 300 with Wren Turboprop
Just to let you all now
i am building currently a Wren Turbo prop into the Wagstaff extra 300 from Great Planes (arf) why? their seems to be no good alternative to find a plane that can take the turboprop from wren ( i mean starting from scratch) and use a budget 500 usd for the aircraft itself (no engine ) and completing it within 4 weeks i flew the wagstaff for over 25 hours now and found that it is a very gentle plane Very hard to break and behaves in the air just great good landing behaving nice donor now just to not make people mad and let the scale as is i will leave off the main sponsors on the plane and will put experimental (real?) why the turboprop? well i have 2 of these wonderfull machines from Wren Turbines 1 is currently build into a Oracle Turbo Raven this plane is 14 kilo,s empty the wagstaff will weigh about 10 kilo,s fully fueled incl 2 liters of kero , battery,s , etc etc now with the turbo prop i am expecting to get about 18 kilo,s of thrust Wren has succesfully altered the combustion chamber a bit making it VERY responsive on high rpm,s it responds now like a gas engine on the higher rev,s of the prop prop i will use will be a 22x10 or 22x12 i fitted allready the engine into the extra 300 and fits! even the cowling fits original main problems i will have are: fueltank placement: 1 eather using wingbags 2 making 2 tanks on top of each other above the CG 3 maybe in the canopy?? Ram intake: 1 beneath the cowlling just before the main gear 2 thru the cowling using a tube (leaving it original) i will keep you posted incl all the pictures untill i am done and you will see a video of its maiden flight Regards Sandor |

Sandor,
It sounds great, by all means, keep us posted. |
GP Extra 300/Turboprop
Sandor,
Are you really serious about flying the Wagstaff Extra at 22 Lbs. (10 Kilos). It seems that most of these are flying at around 15 to 16 Lbs for a wing loading of 28 to 30 Oz. per Square foot. 22 Lbs. would give you a wing loading of around 42 Oz. per Sq. Ft. All I can say is WOW, I'm sure glad you will be flying it and not me. Best of Luck.  |

i started allready
yesterday went testing to set the turboprop before putting it on the patty here you see a picture of the turbo props mcu and gearbox controller displays this was during running engine idle: first displays shows the turbine,s temp , pump power and rpm lower display shows the prop rpm |

engine running on stand me putting a foot down on the stand
and believe me we needed 2 people to hold the workmate afterwards those 2 vans in the background smelled all of kerosene fumes :D |

does this has to fit in there?(sorry mike i now you dont like to see it like this:D )
yes it does but then more cleaned up |

Sandor what's the specs on the turbo prop? What rpm will it spin a 22x8 prop? What the expected thrust in lbs or kilos? What the expected hp? Are any of these specs available or are you writing the book?
We missed you from the Patty Wagstaff thread and I was wondering what happened to you. Now we all know what you have been up to. I think it's great. The most exciting thing that happened to my Patty was that I went from a manual pull choke to a servo activated choke for my BME 50. :o The best of luck and I'll be following your experiment closely. It is looking good.
This has got to be awesome. |

Russ the turbine itself runs up to 160000rpm wich it will turn a 22x12 upto 7500 rpm,s on static ,wich gives about 18 kilo,s of thrust (7HP) so basicly i am revving down the turbine to about 140000 with a 22x10 wich will give me still 6500 rpm,s static but i will use less fuel and will get a longer life on the barrings all the specs are availeble from wren turbine ( wren-turbines.com) i allready posted some time ago video,s from my Turbo Raven look here to see it : http://www.rcuniverse.com/showthread...ight=turboprop or see them here directly: here are a couple of video,s of the turbine http://209.15.85.5/neelix/turbines/raven.wmv i am the one with the sigarette in my mouth wren saw this video an commented "where you starting with gas?" a well if it does not light i will for shure as for writing the book well i spend hours and hours to set all up and getting used to the turboprop and spending even more hours to find out small problemss |

Hi, I have just entered into this forum looking for information on suitable airframes for a wren turbo prop. I will follow your postings on the raven and extra with interest.
Tell me did you ever consider the Pilatus PC9 or a derivitive I think is called a T6-A Texan 11 , Canadian Harvard 11 or Tucano depending where you are. I would like to find a plan or glass kit for around a 90" span model which should fit the turbo prop unit ok. I considered useing my 90" Giles 202 to try it out in but would like something with a narrower cowl so as to get the exhaust nozzles far enough away from the cowl, they get pretty hot. |

GP Wagstaff Extra 300 with Wren Turboprop
i fitted the exhausts today no problems at all enough space to fit them
|
GP Wagstaff Extra 300 with Wren Turboprop
another one
here you can see inside the exhaust i use these pipes to get the hot air outside of the cowling |
GP Wagstaff Extra 300 with Wren Turboprop
and offcourse the engine needs to breath a lot!
so i attached the intake part needed: spinner 120mm from graupner and cut it inhalf :D |

another one from intake

What size propeler are you using and how many RPM?
Do youhave any video of the plane flying? |
