Which engine? Goldberg Cub
Hi guys i just purchased a clipped wing Goldberg Cub (76" wingspan) and need some help deciding what engine to put in it. I have an evolution .46NX and OS55AX both with pitts mufflers. Those are both alrite and all and probably fit the cowl nice but i was thinking of a small 20CC gasser as an option as well. I don't really want all that much power but i love the idea of a gas engine (although i havent used one yet). NItro engines are just too fidgety for me as well. Would a Zenoah 20CC, RGFC20cc, or even an FLT26cc be good for or just way too much power/weight for a 76" piper cub? Anyone else have this model that can tell me about their setup? Thanks in advance.

Dave Dave, even the 20cc engine is way too large for the Goldberg Cub. To use the 20cc to 26cc gas engines, you need to move up to the World Models 1/4 scale models. They will accept the small gas engines you are considering with ease. Ed Cregger |

Ditto. I have found that a 70 4-stroke is ideal for this plane. In your case, I would go with the 55AX

I have the Anniversary Cub I built from a kit many many years ago and it is powered by an HB PDP .61 which is way to much power, but it flys nice at about 1/2 throttle.

I have flown mine on a .48 Fs, .46 2s, .61, .65, 2s and a 70 Fs. I liked the 70 the best. It would idle around the sky all day long on a 12oz tank. teh 61 and 65 were way to much engine. The .48 was nice and scale. A little low on power. maybe a magnum .52 Fs would work well.

I'll definatley go with the OS55 for right now and hopefully switch to a 4-stroke in the future. I plan to have a gas powered cub sometime too...but for now i'll just dream about it. Dave |

Put a .52 4 stroke in it and that will be plenty. I have a 5th scale Sig cub with the .52 and it is perfect. Nothing looks sillier than a Piper j3 flying like a pattern ship.

That - Sir - is a matter of opinion. I love to see Cubs performing climbing knife-edge flight. Granted, it isn't for everyone...

If you read the engine requirements in the manual, it says anything from a 40 to 91 will work.
I have had a Goldberg cub for quite a few years - initially powered with an OS 70, but it seemed a bit underpowered when flown on floats. Replaced the OS70 with a Saito 91 purchased on ebay several years ago. With the Saito 91 it comes off water with authority. Flies wonderfully at half throttle, floats or wheels but will do some pretty spiffy stuff if you open up the throttle. You need to be careful not to go full throttle when taking off or it will ground loop from the torque. Recently crashed it and rebuilt it using ARF colors - or close to thereabouts. I have a .40 size cub flying great with a Magnium .52 4 stroke I picked up for $99. It has been flying since the Mag. .52 first came out. I just replaced the ring this year because the idle was becoming un-reliable. The new ring brought it back to life. GO with a .52 4 stroke. |

I had that same plane and flew it with a Saito 72. I also had a Saito 50 and wondered how that one would fly it. I gave the plane to a friend and he put a .50 Saito in it and it flies really great. Either one will fly it wonderfully.

I built this Cub clipped wing and have had several different engines on it . The Saito .72 was the funnest

Hello; My friend Al has a GB cub on floats with a Saito 80 in it that is just perfect. He tried an OS 48 FS, not enough to get it off the water. Then he tried a GMS 61 two stroke, plenty of power but wrong sound, so I lent him a Saito 80, and he was sold, and went out and bought one for his cub and now thinks it's perfect.

I have the Goldberg Cub with an inverted Saito 72 as well. It flys it wonderfully. I am going to use floats on it this summer (couldn't resist the idea of a Navy Cub on floats:D). Perhaps I will go with a Saito 91 for that flying. A few pictures and a short video of a landing with landing and nav lights on.

Had a K&B 65 in my on floats for 13 years, flew it on wheels and Ski's, 65 was perfect on the water, like a pylon racer on wheels, it was clipped too....... just my 2 cents..
