Top Flite P47 ARF

I received my TF P47 ARF about 2 weeks ago and started building it last Saturday. I've built several ARF's over the last couple years. Iusually build kits. The ARF's Ihave put together always seem to require heavy modifications due to many shortfalls in my opinion. However, when Iopened the box to the TF P47, all Icould say was, "WOW". The covering look's great, all the parts are top notch, and it was clear that TF really put some fore-thought into the modeler who likes to add in scale details and retracts. My only complaint is the wire landing gear that is supplied in the kit. My complaint is only because Ilike the looks and functionality of oleo struts.
If anyone else is building this kit, please post. My p47 is going together pretty fast for only working on it a couple hours a night. I will post pics soon.

|

I've been in the shop all night working on the TF P47 ARF and my TF P40. Iwas hoping to have both flying for this weekends fun fly, but Iam running out of time and will only have the P40 airworthy. Besides, I got the bug to add my own modifications to the P47 (such as full pilot, oleo struts and Robart air retracts, and bomb/tank drop). Here are some pics on the P47 progress.

Here's a pic of the belly. I will be adding a vortec release for bombs and a center tank. More detail to come...

Here's a pic of the cockpit kit that comes with the P47 (on right). The parts on the left are from the old TF cockpit kit. The parts are very close. The major difference is the head rest on the new parts is bent forward and the old head rest is straight. I am also using the OS 91 FS and TF 1/7 pilot.

A pic of the front dashboard. Nice detail for an ARF.
|

RE: Top Flite P47 ARF
Mine is on the UPS truck and should be here any minute. Got a YS-91 for power. Also have a set of Frank Tiano metal retracts and some Lado retracts supposedly on the way (we'll see on those). I'll decide which to use then save the others for something else.
Got the new Eagle-580 ARF coming too along with two Ultra Sport kits (40 and 60). I swore I said no more airplanes for a while not too long ago. Oh well. |
RE: Top Flite P47 ARF
Wow, a YS 91 will be MORE than enough!
|
RE: Top Flite P47 ARF
Just got done unpacking the P-47. All I can say is wow. It is very complete and looks great, there isn't a flaw in the covering. My hot garage will likely put a few wrinkles in it but they should be easy to get out starting from good covering. At first I was hesitant about spending the money for it but now I'm glad I did.
The Cap-580 looks outstanding too but that's for another thread. Think I'll assemble the Cap first since it simple and will go very quick. Then I can take some time and really make the P-47 nice. |
RE: Top Flite P47 ARF
Judging from the way my original red box P-47 flew a 91 will be marginal. 120 might be the way you want to go.
|
RE: Top Flite P47 ARF
Nope, an OS 91 Surpass is PLENTY for this airplane!
|
RE: Top Flite P47 ARF
91 is at the bottom of the manufacturers recommended power range. 120 is at the top and would provide excellent power and speed.
|
RE: Top Flite P47 ARF
Well, I am flying it with a 91 and I can't imagine needing MORE power!
|
RE: Top Flite P47 ARF
A lot of "warbird guys" told me my TF Mustang ARF would be underpowered with the OS .91FS. They all said you gotta run a Saito 1.00 or 1.25. They were all wrong. The OS .91 hauls it around excellent.
Besides, the YS is no ordinary .91. It will be as good as or better than a typical 1.20 4-stroke in my opinion. |

Is it just me or does the canopy look a little too small?
|
RE: Top Flite P47 ARF
I had one of the red box thunderbolts that flew quite well on a .61,but it could be a different area of the country.

RE: Top Flite P47 ARF
I finally got mine ready to go and the maiden flight is tomorrow morning. I've just been so busy and/or unmotivated that it has taken me way too long to finish. The YS-91 fired right up after the re-build. Should hopefully be a good combo.
Was screwing around with the camera in my Blackberry and got this crummy video shot: http://www.rcuvideos.com/video/YS-91...Flite-P-47-ARF |

RE: Top Flite P47 ARF
Well it flew twice today. Actually I only flew it once, another pilot flew it as well.
Didn't fly long since I wasn't feeling too great and I wanted to get home but I like what I've seen so far. It handles great on the ground, doesn't get sqirelly at all on the take off role and handles sweet in the air. I was pleasantly surprised with how nicely it landed (although I almost overshot the runway). It felt very light on the wing and slowed down well with 1/2 flaps. All in all it looks like a keeper so far. Hopefully next week I'll be doing a little better and ready to get a few good flights on it. |

Here's a few pics courtesy of RCU memeber Summerwind.
I also forgot to mention that I tossed the stock retracts and installed a set of LADO's with 3/16 wire. They work flawlessly. If they hold up, they'll be well worh tthe $180 investment. |

RE: Top Flite P47 ARF
The top flite p-47 arf is a tank, its the most solidly built and strongest arf I own(the landing gear is rock solid) but you pay for it in weight..9.5 to 10.5 pounds for a 60 size is a bit high...I have the o.s. 91 surpass in it and had to add alot of nose weight bringing mine to about 10 pounds..In my opinion the plane is underpowered with this engine, a 120 would be much better on a 10 pound plane(your still going to have to add a bit of nose weight)
