I want to throw together a nice 300 and wonder wich one is the best bang for the buck at the quarter scale level?
Any advice would be fantastic.

Just received my PW Extra...........
Not sure where you will be getting yours from (modelland or wholesalers etc...) but mine was ordered through a small hobby shop here in BC and it made the trip from IL with no problems......
I think either would be a good choice......... went with the Patty myself 'cause Great planes has a good rep, customer support etc........

Can't go wrong with either. Also check out the World Models Extra 80"; top notch aircraft.

If you don't mind building you might also look at the 27% CA Extra 300L.

Hmmm? I just can't decide. The specs are almost identical. Maybe a very slight weight advantage for the DP and a very slight strength advantage for the DP.

Does the GP have a big fat fuselage like the DP. I like fat fuselages.

No, the DP presents itself much bigger.

They are virtually identical size. The DP appears fatter in the canopy. Patty is built for a gasser if you are leaning that way. Patty is WAY purtier... :D DP has larger control surfaces although in the right hands patty 3d's just about as well
Ilikeplanes- you like fat fuselages.. :D :D

I guess I'm sort of leaning toward a light weight glow solution. I've looked at both the DP Edge and Extra. They seem exceptionally lightly constructed for their size. I like light. The 16 pound figures I'm seeing for the GP Extras (on RCU) seem pretty heavy for a 1150sqin airplane. Although everyone will tell you they land like a trainer. I've flown heavy and light 72" models with about 950 sqin. A 10-11 pound model flies much nicer than a 13-14 pound one.

The fat fuselage thing is for visual appearance (presentation as Flyfalcons says) and speed control on down lines. I seem to fly much better at slow speeds. Not all airplanes like slow though.

I have a real problem with fat fuselages, my wifes and mine get bigger every year :) :)

Tom, you had better hope to hell that your wife never reads this. As I am sure you are well aware.. you can talk about the women in a lot of ways, but you had better leave their oversize "fuselage" out of the conversation!

Tom, I've been meaning to ask you, what does your GP Extra weight with that BME50?

Just for compairisons my DP Extra was 16lbs 5oz with a BME44.

Now my CA Extra is only 14lbs 4oz with that same BME44.

As for that fat fuselage it also greatly helps KE and everything that requires the plane to fly on its side... rolling circles, KE loops, etc.

When brand new my patty weighed 15 lbs 9 oz with the bme 50 dry. I added smoke lines, valves etc and it weighs about 15lbs 14 oz now. I am about to sell my bme 44 and I weighed both the 50 and the 44. With the appropriate J&A pitts and no ignition the 50 weighed 6 oz more

What? The CA came in at 14.25 lb with a 44cc gas? I may have to reconsider my building priorities. I assume you are talking about the 27%. I bet I could get the CA under 13 lb with glow power.

Ya, my 27% is 14lbs 4oz with a BME44.

A Moki 2.1 would be killer in it too.

If one really wanted too you could have the kit from the box to flying in just 2 weeks. I spent more time covering mine than it took to build it.

I should have a video ready by tonight of it flying this past weekend. I'll post it here once I have it.

Here's a pic:

After reading up on them, I went with the Patty.
Another guy at my club has one with a ZDZ 50 in it, at it flys great.

My Patty after 37 flights, is grounded. My engine bit the dust and needs a serious overhaul. The engine has been in two planes and over 150 flights.

I have flown smallfly's patty and I have flown lovemyedge's dp extra, I haven't flown either one much, but I liked the dp a little better, but I don't think you will find much difference between the two. Wayne Geffon flew Small's patty and did everything imaginable with it, so it will 3-d very well. But so will the DP! Flip a coin or something and then build it as light as you can!

I have both planes now. I bought the DP Extra 2nd hand in excellent condition with a ZDZ 40 RV on it. Very little time on both the motor and airframe. It is what convinced me to buy a gasser for my patty. My only concern is that the DP Extra with the ZDZ 40 on it weighs more than the GP Extra with an MDS 2.18. My BME 50 should be here Thursday morning so that I can set it up and get a more accurate weight. I couldn't do much more than deadstick the patty with the MDS. I am really anxious to get the BME hooked up!

I have both planes the G.P. weight in at 14.2 lbs dry with an O.S. 160 on her and the D.P. weight in at 15.6 lbs with a Moki 1.8 I am doing the maiden on the D.P. Thurs. if Tower delivers the pcm receiver and crystal as promised. will report on how it goes

Are the control surfaces about the same or are the DP surfaces larger?

Geistware, sitting both planes side by side, The G.P. seams to be a little larger in size of fuselage, Wing span and Rudder area. The D.P. has the edge on the elevators and ailerons. I am really looking froward to getting the D.P. in the air so I can compare the flight characteristics.

By the way I finally visited your web site the other day one word AWESOME!!!!!

Well Fed ex showed up just as promised and delivered my receiver and crystal but they also delivered RAIN!!!!! so the maiden on the D.P. will have to wait untill I am off work again
