ALWAYS start your plane at idle speed

There is no reason on a properly tuned engine to start it at even 1/8th throttle, for safetys sake please start at idle...( I won't go into the 3 fingers cut off story)

Use a chicken stick.

Started my skybolt (1.60 twin 4 stroke engine) on full throttle by mistake once, that gave me a heck of a surprise! Thankfully I was using a starter not my fingers, had the plane in a restraint, and my hand on the upper wing, but it really left a mental impression and now I triple check the throttle before spinning that prop up!

I collect these stories and pass them on to the forgetful in my club. Nobody ever thinks it's going to be them.

Dang, what are us poor CL folks gonna do. These engines don't even have a throttle. It's wide open or don't fly so I guess I'll just stick to wide open and be careful. [8D]

Yep, that's just what I was wondering about. http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/js/f.../msn/50_50.gif

I think it is safer to say, make sure you have taken every precaution prior to starting your engine. Using a restraint or a starting table is a good start. That will prevent a runaway plane. But no throttle setting is going to protect your fingers (threefingers story referenced here)should you choose to stick them into the prop while starting the engine or while it is running.

Happy flying!
