High Quality WW2 ARF's

I would like to make a collection of WW2 planes in the 60 to 90 in. wingspan area. Who makes without a doubt the most high quality, scale WW2 planes on the market.

Well, no ARF's are very "Scale" but Top Flight and Hangar-9 have some of the best

That plane looks great. Who makes it and how much of it is custom?

It's made by Comp ARF, seen here:
http://www.carf-models.com/public_ca...U-1D%20Corsair

It's not an ARF in the true sense of the word and at 110 inches is quite a bit larger than the 60-90 inches requested. Very nice none the less.

The ESM version looks pretty good as well and at 74 inches fits right in to your requested size range and is much closer to being ready to fly.

CARF = Composite ARF. You get what you pay for. Not .90 size anyway.

That must mean you get a lot, as CARF planes are not cheap.

$3100.00 delivered for that one, unpainted and with no retracts.

But they are beautifully made and come with a silver finish which you paint over then scuff to show the silver on areas simulating wear and tear.

Nitro Planes 90" 1/7 scale P-38J. An ARF with a lot of potential for some added detail that can make this plane into a very nice looking and flying fighter. As with just about every ARF warbird, expect to do some work on it to get a more scale looking plane. But I paid less than $230 dollars for this P-38, then went to work on it.

Have they improved the covering? It's been a problem for a lot of us in the near past.

It looks like. some of my buddies fly the Spitfire and Hien 50´s. It´s the same covering. I would not complain about it. Of course, as with all plastic cobering it´s no match to epoxy and paint.

Thanks for the help. Thought I would be able to buy all WW2 aircraft from the same company but, looks like I'll have to shop around. NiceP-38 ram3500!

Appreciated...

Agreed, and one of my pet peeves on ARF war birds, they look way too new and shinny. I have found that, after a light sanding with 400 grit, most all covering can be painted with flat Rustolium camo colors and, after a good long curing period of at least two weeks, is fuel safe. Dull weathered war birds look more scale to me and it isn't that hard to do with even and ARF. Even just a good coat of clear flat helps on most of them.

My P-38 is painted with Rustolium over the original covering, except where I rebuilt the boom and pod bottoms. It has held up for two seasons of flying now.

Thank you for the compliment. I know of several guys who are in the process of doing many of the same mods to this bird and I look forward to seeing their progress posted in the thread on this plane. She is a joy to fly and even made one of the local news papers this summer (on the front page:D). Nice to see our wonderful hobby get some positive press.

That would be Yellow Aircraft without any shadow of a doubt. Their 1/5 scale Spitfire and P-40 Kittyhawk offerings are available in true ARF form in limited numbers-

At 1/5 scale it should be large, and it will be expensive (can't find any info on their site, as usual), even the kit version was well over $800 till you got all their accessories. I expect this ARF to be much more. I had a Yellow P-47 some years back. It was OK, but I think the Byron was a better design for the long haul. I am building a Miester and it seems to be the Cadillac in compromise between flyability and looks. Certainly no ARF though and much larger at 102". I have had a couple Giant Scale Planes war birds and liked them for price, looks, and durability. They actually come with dull paint and covering and they are within your WS range. They will still need some work but make respectable representations at far less cost than something like a Yellow.

With quality comes price, and afterall thats what the title of this thread is ;)

No you wont find these listed on Yellows website as these are more professionaly built limited edition models than cookie cutter ARF's All come standard with fully glassed wings hand applied panel lines, hand burned rivets and panel lines. On top of this they are individually then hand painted and detailed.... Please let me know if your interested.

If you like the Yellow ARF's and want to see even "more" detailed scale models on offer then have a look at this new 1/5 OV-10 ARF for 2 x 200 four strokes-

Cheers- Marty

RE: High Quality WW2 ARF's

I guess what you describe could be considered an ARF, but to me it is more a 'custom build' of a kit that smacks of $$$$$$. Definitely high quality, and your right, that was in the thread-starting post. To have a collection of such nice war birds would surely be a joy. If only I had the means. I for one will just have to admire them from afar while I build on.:D

JET FX 10-14-2009 08:46 PM

RE: High Quality WW2 ARF's

Technically yes they are ARF's but most definitely not mass produced as are most we are used to seeing. Yes custom built kit certainly does them more justice I reckon than calling them ARF's and lots of smacks $$$$$$ too :D
