Whats the perfect size ULTIMATE?
Just wondering what you guys think is the "perfect" size Ultimate is ? I've done alot of searching and have found that most modelers want a Ultimate in the mid/large size gas'ers, ok what sizes are thoses? I've also found that alot if not all (97%) of the H9 Ultimate wanters wanted this airplane to be a smaller airplane then what they came out with, is this still true today? and if so what size(s) would be most wanted ? Also have found that the asking price for the H9 Ultimate is more then most are able to hand over....as I understand this 110%! I too wish i had 6-7k for one of those bad boys! :(
I thinking of an Utimate in the range of 90" WS, 100" FL, engine size 80-100cc (as thats the engine i seen most people say they wanted)....Kits would come as 3 ways... - ARC - ARF - Custom..(Customer could pick what/how they wanted different things) like covering, base beginner kits etc. THIS IS NO BS! I'm for real in asking these questions because I think there is a open hole to fill!... I'm also waiting for a couple e-mails to come back to me and if they come back how I want them too, so this airplane would be real and not just a ? also I cant give any pricing ideas as i dont want to over step the rules of the forums :) Please give me your best feed back you can and I will do my part N making this real! :) ......Now a little about myself so you guys know a little about me.....I've been in this hobby for about 15 years! flying everything from Helis to DF Jets to warbirds to Ultimates to Extra 300s/260s! I also think of myself as a Intermediate areobatic pilot. I've also been building them for just as long and for other people, I've also built from box to fly about 50-70 Carl Goldberg Ultimates.....Please ask any questions you may have! |

The DP is nice. But really would like something designed for 40-50cc gas. I know people are putting 40's (amd more) in them. But they seem a bit too fragile for a significant gas engine.
Something that will fly scale with something like a Q42. Fly well and hover with a ZDZ-40, and become full-3D with a hot 50-60cc engine. Is also strong enough for the good ol' G-62. Probably 70" wingspan I have a Super Sportster Bipe with a 66" wingspan. Flies nice with a Q-42. 15 lbs or so. Probably 0.9:1 power/weight. A hot 40 or any 50cc will probably be real nice. This is a nice size to transport. Everything fits in the back of my Cherokee. But with a thick airfoil and a swept upper wing, it is not an ultimate, but an easy to fly fun plane. |
"Ultimate Gasser"
Extreme Flight R/C has one in development, and should have the first prototype soon, I hope. They say it is designed for the DA 50 like most of their other 28% planes. I can't wait.

Been waiting patiently hope It's not much longer! |
Whats the perfect size ULTIMATE?
Without a doubt....
A 70"-74" that would take a 50cc engine (DA, BME, ZDZ, 3W) An 80"-84" that would take a 75-100cc Until you jump on the twin wagon, you can save over $600 on the engine alone... Single servos on the ailerons and perhaps one or 2 on the rudder, one each elevator half. |

I have the DP ultimate and its nice, however; it would be sweetier and get more sky time out of me on a gas engine. i am going to try the bob godfrey ultmate 70.5 WS and 77.75 lenght, foam wings and tail. 75-100 cc gas motor. It's a 30% ultimate. I think someone will make a nice $$ on a 50-60 CC motor ultimate its a small untaped market as of right now. Once it catches on the 1st to enter will be the king it may end up being Extreme Flight R/C. Pics below of the Bob Godfrey 30%.

IF I HAD A NICKLE FOR EVERY TIME I HAVE SAID THIS..
It all started when GP came out with the Pitts. I still argue that much of the sucess of this plane was due to the fact that there is a tremendous hole out there for a 70" areobat bipe ARF that is good for the Taurus 40-50, BME. DA, ZDZ 40/50-even a G62- and ALL OF THE MANUFACTURERS WERE CAUGHT OFF GAUARD. Look at the facts
1- My Pitts was full of assembly "challenges"--everybody knows that 2-There was a top wing mounting problem-they were flying off left and right-everybody knows that 3-The top wing brakets break--everybody knows that--AND WITH ALL OF THAT THEY STILL SELL THEM AS FAST AS THEY COULD. 4-GP Pleaded with folks NOT TO USE A GAS 50cc ENGINE on this plane--everybody knows this and they did it anyway! WHY? Because that is what they wanted! Dave Patrick begs people not to put a gas engine on his Ultimate. People do it anyway! OOOPS--fell off my soap box--FYI-Dave Patrick is coming out witha big Ultimate too, of course it is designed around the 100cc twin. (some folks will never learn) |

How have you been hope your flying season is going well! I couldn't agree with YOU or Krayzc more. Tremendous hole in the 50cc Bi-plane market. It's is very obvious too me that people just want that size aircraft. Much cheaper all around. Not to mention transporting. My TEXAS HURRICANE with the T-52 is outstanding I really don't want to move up to 1/3 scale. I personally would like more planes in my hanger of the 50cc range.I believe that supply and demand would hard too keep up with! Also rumor has it that KANGKE USA is working on a 50cc bi-plane (development). I did order their REARWIN SPEEDSTER should be here end of the month. Also the GP pitts is in my planes for the future! Just can't get enough of those 50cc planes. AJF-2 I'll be in RALEIGH NC in September for vacation how far is your flying field from there? Maybe I could stop by and watch you guys fly! AJT. |

John , I haven't seen you fly a jet ever! As a mater of fact I haven't seen you fly anything for many years.

AJT-- Please look us up when you come. About 1 1/2 hours or so from our field from Raleigh--only about 3 miles off the main highway going to Raleigh. We are planning a Flyin sometime in Sept. Please keep me informed. If you need a plane, you can fly mine.

Whats the perfect size ULTIMATE?
Gas is great...... but you will never see a 50cc Ultimate at a wing loading of 20oz/sq inch.... it just won't happen. That is the main reason Dave Patrick is NOT going to offer a larger Ultimate. Power to weight at a low wing loading is always my goal. If you have to put nitro in it thats fine. You don't see top fuel dragster teams hunting for gas engines to race cheaper. I love my YS 140 DZ and I sure don't mind feeding it.... well worth the rush.
|
Whats the perfect size ULTIMATE?
Been there done that! I won't go back. I'am not T.O.C. material so wing loading doesn't mean that much too me! Tired of the GOO. After flying. And I've spent enough money feeding ALL my YS four strokes over the years for three people. Time for a change. Thats why this hobby is so great Each to his own! Besides the plane I'am flying now will do it all! In the right hands. So IMHO It's not wing loading, It's better pilot skills! Until I reach a certain skill level wing loading won't be a concern. The larger planes that are available now are just fine with me. But I know how you feel about YS's. they are the cat's meow! best glow engines I've ever owned. Had them all except the new fuel injected model. Way too much $$ That's when I decided to go gas. Just felt Glow was getting too expensive too operate especially for the bigger size aircraft.
AJT. |
Whats the perfect size ULTIMATE?
Yep... different strokes for different folks! I will gladly feed a light high powered plane over saving operating costs and being stuck with a heavy plane. The goo is very easily wiped off. My 11 pound DP Ulty/YS 140 DZ is a total dream to fly.

Whats the perfect size ULTIMATE?
i too agree that a 70 in ish WS Ultimate would be the one to get, maybe one inbetween that and the H9 size as well. companies should realize that joe blow R/C just cant afford these huge, $3-8k aircraft. With the TOC basically dead for now, i myself dont aspire to get to that 40% plus size anymore.. no point. not even for the higher IMAC levels... just too much money. IMOHO.
with the rise in demand for 40-50 gassers, plus the 60cc-80cc engines being available for reasonable prices, having planes in that area makes sense... IMOHO. i think ARC and ARF forms would be the way to go. allows those that would like to inspect their plane, then come up with thier own schemes. plus those that just want to get in the air quicker. i hadnt heard extreme flight r/c was coming out with an ultimate. since their site says nothing about it. |
Whats the perfect size ULTIMATE?
I don't think they ( EXTREME) Want to create too much HYPE, about the ULTIMATE before It's close to being finalized. I can only imagine the amount of orders that will poor in when that model is released. I'll be one, thats for sure!

some great replys!
Great replys!
Okay, so far i've seen you mostly all want a 70 inch'ish airplane.... okay we can do that. for 40-70cc size engines......however I would also like to do an Ultimate in about the 33-38% size also as thats the size I myself am looking for maybe even bigger. Plus I would like to try and keep the ARC setup pretty cheap aswell. If this happends I'm only 1 person so orders would be taken 2 at a time and your airplane will be built by hand by ME no one else! Sorry guys im not H9 or DP where i can pump out a few 100 planes at a time. George, I've flown Bart roundys (sp) TGA Mig 29 a few times back before he gave up this hobby and went drag racing. And your right I havent been out at the field in a long time till just this year, i've been out a few times. and im sure you'll be glad to know i still have my touch ;) Keep the great replys coming guys |

Whats the perfect size ULTIMATE?
AJT, Thanks for your reply(s) I have been taking many notes on this and doing alot of searching in these threads for info! and your right this hobby is great and has always been great to me and im glad to be back in it! George has seen me fly and knows as well as I do when I have an airplane I put it thru every test I can put to it! same with my my Warbirds & Ultimates I have built for people in the past! I W-A-N-T to know what is weak and where things need to be stronger! and I have NEVER lost one to poor building or weakness's.....
However I have gottin a couple of PMs about different things that will be offerd on my Ultimate and one that sticks in my mind is Hinges! Now I know this isnt a CG Ultimate we are talking about here and on my CG Ultimates I have used Robart 308 hinges for MANY YEARS, and have not once had one come apart on me on the ground or air! SO, im asking you guys for feed back on this! what do you guys use and what would you like to see on these Ultimates!?!? |
