DP Ultimate 120 or Extra? Help me decide!

Hello Everybody!

I am looking to purchase one of these planes sometime this week. I've always wanted an aerobatic bipe, but the Extra is one of my favorite planes. I will have an O.S. 160fx to for power and am wondering which plane would perform the best. I typically fly sport; however, would like to get into IMAC sequences as well as 3d down the road (just learned how to hover and torque roll and it's a blast!). Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks,

Justin :D

Hey Justin!
If you are looking for something to mount the 160 in I would go for the Ultimate. It is an awesome machine. I have one with a YS 140 DZ and love it dearly. The DP Extra really needs more power then the 160 provides.

I have both of those planes by Dave Patrick.

The ultimate has a pump for cg location of the tank and an os-160 18 x 8 moki, and sometime 18 x 6 prozinger prop.

The Extra has a 22 x 8 bambula on a brison 3.2 it needs that kind of power.

Both planes fly well but for the os-160 I would go with the ultimate. Very flat spins, blenders, harriers, stable elevators, t-rolls well with the 18 x 6 pro zinger. Imac is good if you put some more thrust into the design I have about 3-3.5 degrees on mine for cleaner up lines. I think the plane has 2 degrees build into the design. The plane is very stable at the end aft portion of the rec. balance point. I needed that for better-inverted flight.

Both planes have a very strong rudder and knife edge loops are easy with the ultimate or the extra. It takes less mixing on the ultimate for straight down the run way knife edges

do you have ballet of the sky 2001 sold by prop wash video? there is one on there flown by Kevin Miller he was very smooth on the sticks of that baby. If not pick up those ballet of the sky 2001 they deal with freestyles flying...

krayzc....
Just curious... how does your Edge compare with the Ulty and the Extra. I am considering a DP Edge that is for sale locally.
Thanks!

Edge:
The edge is hard to stall will never drop a wing on you. Not good for doing the IMAC 2 turn spin.
Flat tail version will not complete a knife-edge loop, w/enlarged rudder and hitec 5735 servo.
3d is king, harriers, waterfalls, blenders, elevators, wall, t-rolls all day.
Snaps require the rudder to be dialed down to not over snap.
Will slow down very quickly.
Very little if any pitch mixing for knife-edge flight.
More roll coupling mixing required for knife-edge.
A small amount of mix to take out the rocking of the wings in the harrier, and elevator.

DP Extra:
Will stall if you get it to slow good for the 2-turn spin on the IMAC
Will complete a knife-edge loop with standard rudder and 1-8411JR servo.
3d is king, harriers, waterfalls, elevators, blenders, wall, t-rolls all day.
Snaps stop on a dime on high or 3d rates although 3d rates are too much for snaps (rudder 3d) I never snap on 3d elevator.
Will do slow high alpha knife-edge.
More ailerons on the extra compared to the non- 3d one that aw rec on the edge.
Bleeds off speed slowly.
Very little roll coupling for knife-edge.
More pitch mixing required for knife-edge.

Ultimate:
Not an easy to stall plane very stable.
Will complete a knife-edge loop with standard rudder and 1-8411JR servo.
3d is good, harriers, elevators with out the wing rocking or mixing to take out the rocking, blenders, t-rolls are very fast if you can keep up with the speed 4-5 is usually all I can get. This is with an 18 x 6 pro zinger.
Lightly build but very strong design. Will talk full speed down line blenders. I never do but have seen it done with this bird.
A very fast bird on 18 x 8 props (OS-160)
No mixing on the harrier, and elevator.
Very little pitch mixing required for knife-edge.
Small amount of roll coupling for knife-edge mixing.

My Edge is the 29% one by Aeroworks so I don't know how the DP edge does its groove!

Strong points the AW 29% Edge and the DP Extra are both flown on gas (Brison 3.2 swinging 22 x 8 bambula props)

DP ultimate would be flown more by me if it were gas. It could take the weight of a gas motor as the plane has 1200 sq inches of wing space. The DP Extra and the Edge also have 1200-1200 of sq. inches. It would require remolding and shaping of the cowl as the motor would all but hang out and look very ugly. A zdz 40 or brison 2.4 would be the ticket. I came close to ordering a ARC Dave Patrick and doing the remolding of the cowl but decided to get a larger ultimate the Bob Godfrey 70"WS 77.75" length 30% Ultimate. It should arrive next week (its a kit) foam wings, tail feathers and a built up fuse.

Thanks for the help guys, I've decided on the Ultimate.

Krayzc, what would you recommend for the aileron servos? I can't afford any digitals, so I was looking at going with the Hitec Hs-225, also not sure if I should go with metal gear or not.

Thanks,
Justin

Dave recs a standard servo I am using jr 531 they are 45 oz on 4.8 volts I am running a 6 volt system so that gives me about 57-60 oz on the ailerons. I am running an 8101 on the pull pulll elevator that is a 90 oz servo on 4.8 and last a Jr 8411 on the rudder at 155 oz at 4.8 volts. The hitec 225 are a very fast servo small and light you will be fine with 4 of them on the ailerons check them often to make sure you have not lost one of the ailerons, as I just lost one 225 on my funtana throttle a few weeks ago and the throttle is not asking allot of a servo. I am also running one on the funtana choke this is the 225 mg. It’s at hitec for repair.
