Dave Patrick EXTRA 330L
Hello,
I just found this site and I have my Dave Patrick Extra 330L. I have read the post about 330L at Reviews forum but I really prefer glow engine. I am not a beginner in R/C but pretty fresh in this size of the plane. I would like some suggestions on subjects below: - how big the engine?.I would like to be able to hower but I don't really care about unlimited vertical and I prefer 2-strokes. -hinges that came with the kit- are they OK? They are just simple CA hinges. -servos , just follow recomendations from manual? Any of your suggestions will be very welcome. This is my first model of this size ( I flew mostly 60 size so far )and I would like to do a good job on setting it up. Thank you , whoever is going to take time and help me. Andrzej |

Go to this web site and it will answer most of your questions and concerns. I have a Saiti 180 in mine and I had to add 11oz of lead to the nose. You will love this model.

Hi Cadman, I am in the same position as you. I have been flying 40 and 60 size planes for a while and have just recently got the DP Extra 330L. It is almost finished. Just waiting for a new radio (Futaba 9C) to arrive. Here is the set-up I have.
Engine is the OS 1.60 FX Futaba 9151 on rudder, Alerions X2, Elevator X 2 (elevator servos are in the stock position in the tail, push rods changed to 4-40s) Futaba 9001 on trottle Stock hinges used 1900 MA receiver Nicad Menz 17 X 10 prop (might put in a 18 X 8 instead) Current set-up is coming up tail heavy but I will wait for the new radio to arrive before adding and lead to balance. Apparently, this set-up will fly okay but not give unlimited vertical. Anyway, when I finally get to fly her, I will let you know. :D |
2-Stroke Glow
Why is it that nobody has put a Moki 2.1 or a OS BGX-3500 on one of these? I keep hearing that the 180 saito and OS 160FX require nose weight and that the small gas motors are almost perfect weight wise (3-3.5lbs). I'm curious to here what this plane would do with either one of these motors.

Moki 2.1
A Moki 2.1 weighs right about 4 lbs with mount and muffler(and don't forget the extra glow fuel needed). This is about the same as a small gas motor, which have equivilent power, but more torque at lower RPM and will pull a larger prop which really makes a difference in this size plane.

Would a Saito 300 twin be too much engine for this plane? I have one NIB and would like to know. BTW my DP Extra is still on back order.

Battery location
Have you guys needing nose weight already tie wrapped the battery to your engine mount ?

Sounds perfect. I have a BME gasser in mine. When discussing engine choices with an IMAC flyer/friend before I bought my BME, he said the 300TWIN would be THE NUTS engine if money if was no object. Expensive to buy and a glow fuel hog, but great engine.

Well, it sounds like I'll have to stop LOOKING :rolleyes: at the Saito 300 and start flying with it! Actually I was planning on mounting it in a 1/4 scale Travel Air Mystery ship... which is a long way from complete. I'll just break it in on the DP Extra first. :D TX |

Hey Texan..... I have a friend who flys the Saito 300 twin on the Midwest Extra (80") at about 15 Lb. It is truly awesome performance wise and sounds great.

Battery Location

Yes, I have my battery mounted in the engine box itself, in front of the fuel tank! I am thinking of reducing the amount of lead I will need to balance the plane by tie wrapping a couple AAs wired in parallel to the engine box and installing a simple micro-switch on the trottle servo to activate on-board glow at idle. Anyone tried this before and will there be any problems? |

I have used a micro switch for glow the way you are thinking!
However, I did not put the batteries in front because I didn't need the weight up there ! It will work great ! If you wire it this way you will need to remember to bump the throttle up after you finish your flight ...otherwise... while your talking to your buddies your glow plug will stay lit :eek: |

I have that same setup w/160.It flys great.go with the recomended servos, JR 8411 digitals:Ail. Hitec 5945 digitals:1,ELEV.pull-pull setup 1,rudd.pull-pull setup and some high speed mini.thro. I'm using an Moki 18-8 prop.The last time I flew it i had the cg at the furthest mark according to the manual...I'm going to move it back to 6.25-6.5" back after reading some of the forums..I have the 6v 1800 mill.pack on the tank cover,and a film canister W/some shot in it.I'll take shot out and the cg should be great.. You may want to strenthin the aft cockpit...My last flight I had the fuse break there..Thank god I had the pull-pull stup there.The cables and the little covering I had left holding the fuse.together helped me land it without further harm... The 160 doesn't have Unlimited vert. but great for my kind of flyin.it will hover,keep it light as possible.. I used the Ca hinges I never had a problem with them. Dave Patrick is sending me (free of charge) the new fuse and anything else I need to get it back in the air...I ordered it at the Wram show in Feb.I need to wait at least 6 weeks to get the parts.ARG! :mad: This is the best flyer I have in my hanger,the second would be a Ultra Stick 120 /saito180 :spinnyeye enjoy xtraflyr |
