BH AT-6 Texan Build

1 Attachment(s)
I have been asked to do a build thread of my new Black Horse AT6-Texan.
This is build No.2 as the first one was test flown last weekend and crashed on take off. So here we go again.

The first thing I noticed when I open the box was how good it all looks.
Dont be taken in though. Hiding in the kit are liitle things that need looking at.
First off are the hindges. (ailerons and Flaps)They all appear to be pr-installed in the control surfaces.
They are only tacked in place. They seem to be in tight but some are loose so I got a small scalpel blade and carfully cut them out and re gluded them in place.
The other problem so far are the aileron and flap servo hatches.
They have been built wronge. The triangle reinforcment blocks are on the wronge side of the servo trays. I had to cut them off and add new ones.
Also not much glue was used so 2 of them were loose. A bit scary when you think of it as you cant see or get to other glued parts of the model.
So check where you can as to how good joints are. I will keep an eye on it as I work my way thought the build.
Pictures so far are.
Hindges fitted.
Ailerons and flaps fitted.
Servos fitted and push rods made up.
And Retracts fitted to the centre section.
The wing comes in 3 parts so they will be glued together as late as I canto make iteasierto work on..

RE: BH AT-6 Texan Build

Does this wing have the aluminum joiner tube that spans all 3 sections? On one end of my wing, the little dimples were in the correct spot for drilling and putting the wing screw in, on the other wing, the dimple was off a little, and the drill just slipped through the sheeting. It didn't take much to fix, but I did have to do some cutting and patching.

Now some question.....
( ofcourse keep the pics coming......)

do you have any pics of the AT-6's box ?
The box that the airframe came on it....

Also,

i see that they supply air-retracts.
Do they supply also the air-pump and air-tank ?

As requested here is the box photos.
The air retracts do come with the air tank but you have to have your own pump. I have bought a small electric pump. It seem to work ok.

I have now fitted the retracts air valve and connected the air pipes and fitted the servo.
It all goes together really well. No problems at all.

Yes this model does have the aluminium wing joiner. Its a nice tight fit with no slop at all.
I wont be fitting the screw in my wings, I think that will look ugly so I am going to glue my wings together.

Here are some photos of the wing joiner, the fillets that go between the wing panels and the wing parts fitted to show what the parts go where.( I am sure it is obvious really)

The fuslage.
I have made a craddle to hold the fuslage while I do the work need on it.
As you can see the fuslage iswell made and the pilots are already fitted.
I will be using an ASP 91 four stoke in it. I have one of these engines in another modeland I have found it to be very reliable.

No more photos for acouple more days now untill I have done some more.

Ray ,

thank you for the box pictures.....

Also double the glue of the wing halves,
me 2 i don't like screws etc....

But for a power plant i would go with a nice Saito 120S with gold rocker covers
as i did with my BH P-36A Hawk....

You can see pics on my gallery!

Keep pics coming.

Hi pennbrit
I'm thinking of buying an AT6 next week. Looks goog value?
Is the canopy fitted ? I would like some scope to modifiy the office without to much distruction in the process.

Kostas 1will have plenty of power?
I'l be going the RCV 91 cd route probably. That has been a good combination in my H9 Thunderbolt, sounds good too !

Good pics

Where do you fly?

The build continues.
I have fitted the engine now. I did not use the engine mount that came with the kit. Because I am a CNC programmer and have milling and wire eroder machines that I am in charge of at work I made my own engine mounts out of aluminium. Much stronger. And as I found out about the C of G needing to be further forward than shown in the instruction the extra weight will help.
As with the ailerons and flaps, the hindges on the elevators were only tack glued in, so again I cut them out and re-glued them to make sure they are in good and strong.
I have fitted the Air tank and all the fittings for the retracts, and I have fitted the radio at this stage. The reason I have fitted all this before fitting the tail is so I dont keep knocking the tail and damaging it.
The tail has been dry run fitted and is now ready to be fitted and I will also be gluing the wings togather tomorrow. (Sunday). Its looking good so far.
Here are the latest photos.

Hi wheddo
Yes the canopy is factory fitted. But, since this is model number 2 I did actually cut the canopy off the first one. It comes off quite easy. I used a fine scalpul and carfully cut around the edge.

Wow, nice job on the engine mount!
I am working on some hatches for the switches and air valves on mine. I have them cut out, I just need to mount the stuff.

RE: BH AT-6 Texan Build

Just found out that my spool valve leaks when I go to retract the gear. I started with less than enough throw on the servo to make the gear go up, and kept dialing in the endpoint until the valve would make the gear go up. At that point, it just hisses and leaks all the rest of the air out. If I pump it up again, and lower the gear, it seems to hold air for a few minutes, but when I put the gear up, I lose all pressure in about 1 minute.

I did get the hatches built, but not quite finished, as I need to hinge them. The little magnets I use to keep the hatches latched are a pain in the butt to handle.

Will BH/Hobby People/Whoever make good on it?

RE: BH AT-6 Texan Build

Another guy in our club had the same problem with his valve. Mine seemed to work ok. just one thought. try making it move further than just opperating the retracts. The o-ring has to seal in the bore once it has been moved from up to down and vise versa.

I got my wings glued together now and I glued the tail on tonight.
Tomorrow evening will be fit the rudder and then connect up all the push rods for the rudder, elevators. and throttle. Once that is all done all that will be left to do is fit all the little plastic parts that finish the fuslage off and the cowling of course. It will be ready to go for the weekend once more.
I will be phoning Ripmax to get them to confirm the C of G as I still beleive the instructions are wronge. Very wronge, which is why my first one crashed on take off.
Whatch this space.

Ray,

what's the expected AUW ?
According to the box info the all up weight should be around 3.8 kg
I will try and weigh it when it is finished.

The BH AT-6 and the Seagull AT-6 are definitely two different builds. Only the wing (less flaps) appears to be the same.

How frustrating. Have not been able to log in for 2 days now. The sign in link hasnt been working. Any way. In now.

The build is getting there. Nearly done now. Its been to hot and humid for me to be bothered with doing to much at a time.
I have glued the tail on, fitted the rudder and put the final Decals on. I have been adding decals as I go.
Fitting the tail needed a little triming. The tail seat is not the same shape or size as the tail it self. So a little cutting and sanding was needed.
I also noticed that the tail had a slightly different profile top to bottom so it fitted better one way up.
Here are a couple more pics.

Once the tail was glued on I fitted the tail wheel and connected up the elevator and rudder push rods.
The back end is now finished.I am going into the garden now to fit the engine cowl. I have built this model in the garden on the patio table.
A couple more photos.

Ray

judging from my BH P-36A Hawk,

i suggest that you screw the rudder horn more,
so that the nut
will go ALL inside of the plastic black horn backplate!
And then add a couple of drops of CA+ thin just for security.

Judging again from my experience....

I also think that this type of assembly BH uses
is one of the best setups i have seen !!!

That photo is a bit missleading. The nut is inside the black plastic part. I added a locking nut to make sure it stays there.
But thanks.

The cowl has now been fitted and the cut out for the head and exhaust are cut.
It has also had its first full assembly with the wheels down. At that point the battery went dead. Its a 6 volt sub c pack I have had laying around and I never charged it before I started playing with the radio.
I might fit a lipo and a bec. Much better power reliability. Only the 2 plastic air intakes and the gun to be fitted and then its done.
More photos.
When it gets its test flight there will be a video on my youtube site. I will post the link when that happens.
Wont be this week end though.
