Clearance sales are always good.[sm=thumbs_up.gif]
Can you put in a good word for us and have the factory send us a freebie. I'd be a lot braver with mine if I had some spare parts on Hand.[sm=teeth_smile.gif] |
RE: Redwing 30cc Sbach Build
Hello guys,
Just a note to inform all of you interested in putting together a Redwing MS2 that I just started a new build thread on this specific model. It can be found [link=http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_9995777/tm.htm]HERE[/link]. So far I am very excited with this model, it looks like it's going to be a terrific flier for its size. Anyone with a completed MS2 please check in and give me your inputs, ideas and suggestions. |
RE: Redwing 30cc Sbach Build
Well I finally got one test flight in today. With my CG set at the back of the wing tube 12cm, I feel it borders being tail heavy. I think 13 cm would be the maximum anyone would want to go but it's all personal preference.
Knife edge tucks a wee bit to the wheels and requires very minimal rudder and elevator input. A 45 degree upline at full throttle then rolled inverted (3 times) and each time required no elevator to hold the 45 degrees.. Very very stable if you yank on the elevator, no tendacies to roll or twist out. Struggled a bit with harriers but I'm not really good at them anyways. Inverted flight required virtually no down elevator. Tried a bit of hovering and seemed to lock in quite well. Rolls are very predictable and quick to stop, loops are very easy and predictable. Will try some knife edge loops, flat spins etc next time out. Ended up with some loose bolts after the first flight. The Syssa 30 performed flawlessly with the Mejzlik 18/6. It would pull it out of a hover but very slowly. My plane weighs in at 11 3/4 lbs. but has great slow flight stability and landing speeds. The Sbach is a very quick plane and responds very well to all inputs and best of all looks really really cool. Very well designed ariplane Tim and would definitely recommend this plane to anyone. Would really like to try a larger one. Saaaay a 35%er :D;) Jack |
RE: Redwing 30cc Sbach Build
Glad to hear it Jack!I'm sure it will be better and better each trip out too, once you learn the plane more.Even though this plane is a bit heavier than the MX2, it does 3d very well as you've found, due to it's larger fuselage in part. I'm planning on making version 2 a little lighter/bigger wing, or ideal combination thereof. In this size plane, when you build, do everything you can to keep weight out, and you will be fine.

RE: Redwing 30cc Sbach Build
I just learned a hard (and expensive) lesson today.
Today could not be a better day for flying the weather was just perfect. My problems started after setting up my almost new GP 28% Extra 330S. Some 30 seconds after powering up the receiver, the battery went dead. Zero volts output, then I made mistake number one, decided to recharge the LiIon 2400 Fromeco Rx pack. Three minutes into the charge and lo and behold the charger showed a full charge after pumping 67mAh into it. Then I decided to crank the engine up and give it a full range radio check and it performed flawlessly. The flying conditions were so attractive I ASSUMED the glitch may have been a bad connection, mistake number three. Went up for a 5 minute flight at most and landed with no problems. The Extra was flying like on rails, I could not wait for the next four or five flights. After that I spent several minutes with the receiver turned on to adjust the throttle curve then powered on and went for the second flight, mistake number four. During flight it started to act up and I sensed something was really wrong, so I intermediately gave the transmitter to my good friend Bob Parker which is the best pilot in our club. He expertly guided it down to what look like it was going to be a perfect landing and then just five feet over the threshold it nosed in. The cause: A fully depleted battery. The moral of this story: Several weeks ago while reading the AMA instructors syllabus I found the number one thing a good instructor must teach a student is WHEN NOT TO FLY. My eagerness to fly trumped my common sense and knowledge and I learned a good lesson the hard way. And by the way I have always pride myself in making all my planes electronics bullet proof by adding the latest technology in batteries, switches, power distribution etc. for system redundancy and this time around I choose to go single system on the Extra only to save weight. Shame on me, I am really embarrassed. As you may tell I don't even want to see a model plane right now. And the worst thing is that the next two days I am going to be tied with medical appointments and will not be able to much work on the MX. One good thing have come out of all this fiasco. I was planning on running the MX on a single LiFe (A123) pack.....well never again. Now I will be running two LiFe packs with a BattShare. The increased weight penalty will buy me a lot of peace of mind and maybe a whole bunch of dollars and aggravation. Hang in there until I post again. And keep those Sbach flying, they are great. |
RE: Redwing 30cc Sbach Build
That really stinks! But you are right, if you get that vibe not to go up, then it is best not to. Almost all of my mishaps were when Iknew Ishouldn't and Iignored the feeling(or iffy circumstances).
As far as single pack, dual pack, just be sure to pick appropriate sized packs. It really depends on if you want to fly it light or just sport it around the sky. Ifly single packs all the time and have not had an issue like that, expect when I didn't charge it. But if Ididn't charge one of them, Iwouldn't have charged both. I just forgot.hang in there man.You will enjoy the MX2 a whole lot when you get it ready |
RE: Redwing 30cc Sbach Build
Sounds like you got a false peak.
I learned a long time ago my batteries are only as good as the chargers I use on them, and I also learned if I let a battery get too low I need an adjustable peak lockout feature on my charger. Most auto type chargers only lock out peak detection for the first 60 seconds of charging, which is fine if the battery is not near or at nominal charge, or has been sitting unused for a while. In those situations I always set my peak lockout to 5 minutes and keep my hand on the pack for those 5 minutes so I can shut off the charger if the pack starts overheating. If you can't adjust your peak lockout, and your charger shows complete before the pack is near it's usual capacity, unplug the pack from your charger, reconnect it and rerun the usual charge cycle. Do this as many times as it take to either get the packs usual capacity, or the quick false peaking stops. Once I'm satisfied the pack is fully charged, I run it through a hard discharge cycle, let it cool, and charge it on a standard charge profile to insure it's back up to normal before I trust it to be fully functional. |

RE: Redwing 30cc Sbach Build
Headsup for DLE 30 User: The drill template that came with my plane (marked DLE 30cc) was off by quite a bit. After I drilled and mounted my DLE 30 using the template, I found that my spinner would not line up with the cowl by a long shot.
To recenter the spinner, I will have to shift the holes 5/16" to the right and 1/8" up. One more thing, the two upper nuts ride on the triangular stock used to reinforce the firewall. I had to eliminate the washers when I tightened the bolts and let the nuts crush into the triangular stock, which is hard wood not balsa. Last thing, I had to use 1" standoffs in addition to the standoffs that came with my DLE 30 to get the prop to clear the cowl. I converted my DLE to single bolt using Valley View's kit. I gained 3/16" in prop extension. You will need a 1 3/16" standoffs plus factory standoffs for a standard DLE 30. |

Question on the colour schemes available.
On the website it lists the orange mermaid scheme which there are lots of photos. Bity there is also an Orange Thunderbolt scheme. Could we see a photo of the Orange Thunderbolt scheme please [8D] |

You're probably right, probably just a typo

RE: Redwing 30cc Sbach Build
I got some video of the MX2 flying... [youtube]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SsdEPa70dMc[/youtube] This was from the first flight of the day. on the second flight one of my aileron servos did some funny stuff causing a premature hard landing (it was a 2 year old discontinued servo)... with that said the plane should be back up in the air by this weekend.

RE: Redwing 30cc Sbach Build
I'm back for a couple of days before I have to take off again. I see you guys have not been sitting on your hands.
Raf. Sorry to read about your Extra. I sure liked that plane. I forgot who commented on the Triangle reinforcement. I ground mine away with a dremel tool enough so that my flat washer laid flat. I also ground the edge off of my flat washers so that they clear the side walls as needed. T.J. You haven't lost a beat. Great video. Now you guys know why I wanted to get mine out there first. He is a great pilot. Put a great plane in his hands and I don't have a chance. Great Job[sm=thumbs_up.gif] I to have to replace my old Wing Servos. They don't want to stay in trim. I have to find time to do it before I fly again. I also changed to a single batterie. The performance didn't change. I'm going back to a dual batterie set up. My C/G is right at 13cm. I like it there. It suites my style of flying. |
RE: Redwing 30cc Sbach Build
I posted on the Mx2 thread too, but once again TJ, great flying! You make it look easy. The plane is nice and light, so it helps to have a plane that can do the stuff, but man! you wring them out!!
|
RE: Redwing 30cc Sbach Build
I got my Batterie back in and the Servos changed out. Now all I need is time to fly.

RE: Redwing 30cc Sbach Build
I trimmed 5/16" off the right side of the template and 1/8" off the top. Pushed the template to the top right corner of the firewall and drilled four new holes. Remounted my DLE 30 last night and the spinner centered near perfect on the cowl.

RE: Redwing 30cc Sbach Build
My Dad and I took the Sboch out for a test fly on the new servos. Everything checked out fine. There were two guys at the field with a ton of Questins. That means they liked it.[sm=thumbs_up.gif]
IMAA meet tomorrow. We are going.:) |

ORIGINAL: AirTech Hey Night Scream all I could find under [link=http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/uh_viewItem.asp?idProduct=10736&Product_Name=Turni gy_30cc_Gas_engine_w/_CDI_%28BlackEdition%29]Turnigy 30CC Gas Engine[/link] that they advertise as producing 2.7 HP. Beware of manufacturers power claims, and where in this world they build these engines? Are you sure they have spare parts for this thing? Buyer beware, you always get what you pay for. In any case if you can really squeeze 2,7 horses out of this engine you may be able to huckit and for that matter any other 11 to 12 Lbs. bird. I have another one of these cheapo engine in my funtana's though both of them only have 2.8hp and they have good enough power. Here's the page that has the info on the turnigy engine i'm talking about.
