ROBBE .90 Autogyro
 

Hi,
My neighbor (an elderly guy) used to fly with us for years, until bad health kept him in. I was pilfering his rc room for a prop nut the other day and he says "here is a strange one for you" and I looked closer and he had pulled out a brand new Robbe .90 size autogyro. It is a semi built kit no engine from back in the late eighties or early 90's maybe even older. I was just wondering if this sort of thing has any following or is it a pretty dead aspect of rc? I thank you kindly in advance, I can take pictures if anyone wants to see it..

*edit: by semi-built, I mean it came that way, the machine has never been out of the box.

I'd be curious. It wasn't a Whopper? Never hear of a Robbe autogyro semi kit.

Hi,
I will go over to the hobby shop and take a picture of this thing. I don't think it said whooper on it but I could be wrong. I am sure it was a ROBBE and it is .90 size glow engine. As far as size goes it is a whopper:) I will go take some pictures..

It is probably a Robbe Whopper. Robbe bought Schluter, the original maker.

Thinking it's a Whopper too, but semi kit? and for a .90? got my attention. Was thinking if it was a Whopper, with the clark-y blades, I might be interested.

I think it was a .60 suggestion when Schluter then robbe changed to a .90 suggestion.
I'm not for certain. don't have the full history on the whopper, although I have a
review article by larry jolly somewhere...
not sure about the semi-kit designation....
Whopper always sounded to complicated to mess with, pre-spin and all that.
Experience the G3PO tells me that simple can work well.
The only times I wished i had pre-spin was with no wind on grass takeoffs....

Found the article. Model Airplane News, February 1991.
Rotor blades were described as "...the most unusual profile I've seen on a rotorcraft;
it's somewhat undercambered, like a glider wing."

Also this item:
"You'll notice that you must use your rudders a lot more than when flying a plane."


Specs:
rotor diameter 58 inches, height 20 inches, weight 10 pounds.

Robbe Whoppers have had quite a bit of coverage in this site in the past - just check the `search` facility. The web link in my letter of a year or so ago however no longer applies (magazine report).

I think I remember reading your review, I just don't have a saved copy.
But I do have a saved copy of your lear jet article I intend to build some day.
geez, good thing your hat is thicker than your skin....

Yup Mickey, I got thick skin. Drives my wife crazy when she tries to lay a guilt trip on me. My visits to rcuniverse usually involve just reading. When I saw your first comment on the Whopper, I thought I'd expose myself.

Checked your link to Bob Andris's G3PO and will comment there.

Oh Mickey, I can scan my Whopper article and send. Dick Kidd said it was the longest review RCM ever printed. Hated writting the "WE did this and WE did that. That was 14 years ago!

The Hydrofoam boat is an interesting concept..May change the world of flying..Seen the video in AMA discussions I believe. I want one but I HAVE to get one of them damn G3PO's Flying first..Lets have one at the November Wings and Things Flyin at Lakeland.

I love that Hydofoam flying boat! The video was worth the 40 minute download. The video was a wonderful presentation of the model and a great sales tool. Then I started to think, it's no different than the flying race car or flying lawn mower that have been around for a long time. But that video said: You / I gotta build one too!

HI David,
You where right! It is a whopper I went and looked at it today. You where also right about it being a kit, it is. I had that part wrong. I asked if he would part with it and his reply (In his best coot tone) was: you might buy it from Dora in a few years when I'm gone..Not before though! He also has a Huge 1/6 scale (almost as big as a full size door that it is "drydocked" on) ROBBE fire boat with all the bells and whistles. I hadn't seen it before today. It is his 20 year project. Anyway thank you guys for the thread and happy rotoring:)

I've got one if anybody is interested. I'll trade for a four stroke Saito, OS or YS .91 in good condition. I don't know if all the parts are there but I think they are. Most of it is already built. I took the body sides off for the picture. If the kit came with rotors, I don't have them but I don't think it did. Does anyone know for sure? I can provide more pictures with closeups if you want.
