Default 18 v battery

hi,
i purchased an 18 volt power drill battery for my sullivan starter, dynatron.
this can take up to 24 volts,
the battery is 1.3 Ah

this set up is very strong, works great

my question is

does anyone know where i can purchase a voltage regulator, so that i can connect the glow plug to this, and pull out only 12 volts going to glow (OFNA plug driver)?

i did it.

i went to radio shack and bought these 8 ohm non inductive white rectangular resistors.

put two in series and brought voltage down from 20 volts to 12.5 volts.

fyi
this did not work.

went to field,

and although it read 12.5 volts, it must have had very low wattage, that it did not make it glow.

need to find another way.

You need 1.2V to go to the glow plug, not 12V! I did something similar, using a 4S LiPO to replace my 12V lead acid battery for my power panel. The power panel allows for varying the current to the plug in a more sophisticated manner than what you are trying to accomplish, as well as providing a direct connection for the starter. I'd suggest you invest in a power panel, but start with the plug current turned to minimum and ramp it up to get the glow you want. Power panels are available from all the hobby sites.

12.5 volts will blow out a Glow Plug so fast, you wouldnt even see a hint of glow... needs to be 1.2v..

Orthobird, what is the power source for you glow plug? A single cell NiCad or NiMH is approx. 1.2V. If you are using a power panel, I'll agree with your 12V power source.

This regulator will give you 12 volts and handle a 1 amp load.

Do you have a model # or picture of the glow starter that you are using, just to put everyone at rest that you are not blowing out glowplugs. I know there are some units that basically have the same circuits that are in the power panel and will run from 12 volts. I am not sure what the current demand is on them.

You need more than 1 amp. You need at least 3A

Agree with dirtybird. Three amps is in the green zone on my Hobbico Deluxe Power Panel II, 12V mofset power center. It's currently powered by a 4S LiPo when my 12V SLA battery died after eight years.

I would throw that thing away and go to the hobby shop and get a regular NiCD plug driver. Its ridiculous to need 12V to drive a 1&1/2 glow plug
