Default Newbie - Battery Question Again

HI all,

I have recently started flying planes. I have a Super Cub and an Apprentice, and am building a Vector foamy.

I have tried to look online to buy additional batteries, but the choice seems endless.

Can any one offer me advice on what batteries they use for the above planes?

The planes came with the following batteries:

Super Cub: 1100mAh 3S

Apprentice: 3200mAh 3S

Vector: none, I need to order some

The "brand" name one my LHS sells work, but are quite costly when compared to prices on Hobby King.

I would like some advice as to what I could use, instead of the $50-60 ones sold locally.

Many thanks,

Ryan

You are right that there are "endless" options for batteries. I have quite a mix of different brands and to be honest, never found any real difference in performance or quality between brands. I don't know for sure, but it would not surprise me to learn that many of the different brands out there are manufactured side by side, in the same factories, from the same components, with the same workers, and just different labels.

I have a bunch of Rhino batteries I bought from HK several years ago and have had no complaints whatsoever with these batteries. Many people also say good things about Turnigy batteries. One problem with HK is shipping costs can be quite high (unless your item is available in a "local" warehouse) offsetting the low item price. Also, if something does go wrong with your order, you pretty much have to write it off as a loss, since customer service is essentially non-existent (that said, I have never had a problem with an HK order myself).

In addition to HK, you might also want to check Value Hobby. They sell GForce branded batteries. I bought four of these batteries earlier this year and so far so good. I know of at least one other club member who has quite a few more and swears by them.

The other brand many club members swear by is Gens Ace. HobbyPartz runs promotions on these from time to time and you can get some good prices.

You will hear good and bad about just about any brand, so my advice to you is to look for sales and shop price. Treat them well and they will last many seasons, but think of batteries as semi-disposable items and toss any battery that is puffed or showing signs of not behaving properly (not holding charge, not able to be balanced, etc.).

Good luck!
