Default Spektrum S2100 Smart Charger

I am having an issue with a new Spektrum S2100 Smart Charger (Firmware Version: 1.0.0.10) when attempting to charge a SPMX50004S100H5 14.8V 4S 5000mAh 100C Smart Battery. I have the Spektrum SPMXCA507 adapter cable to connect the S2100 to the battery.

1. The S2100 charger does not see the SPMX50004S100H5 as a smart battery.
2. If I initiate a changer after manually setting up the parameters the S2100 charger generates a Abnormal Connection Error and stops the charge process.
3. I have a Spektrum XBC100 Smart Checker and it is able to read the battery The battery reads 15.28V with each of the four cells reading 3.80V. It is also properly identified as a Spektrum SMART LiPo "Battery Chemistry" 4S "Cell Count" 5000mAh "Battery Capacity" 5C "Charge Current" 100C "Discharge Current".

I have four batters and three of adapter cables. All batteries get the same warning from the S2100 Charger.

I have a call into Horizon Hobby technical support but they are estimating a 1-2 hour wait due to call volume.

Does anyone have any ideas on how to fix this issue.

UPDATE: Horizon Hobby is going to replace the charger. and I should have the new one on about four days.

I'd like to know what Horizon says about your situation.

Is there a way to turn the "Smartness" off, and just use the charger as a "dumb" charger?

They are sending me a new charger.

I know that you can charge a standard batter with it as I have done that. I did not try charging my new Smart Technology battery with the charger connected via a standard cable EC5 to EC3. The only cable that I had was a IC5 to IC3.

The charger has a IC3 connector and the battery has a IC5

I think the chip in the battery is working correctly as the Spektrum XBC100 Smart Battery Checker was able to read all of the battery information correctly.

Rusty, if you connect a standard battery the SMART Technology is disabled.

Is there a way to charge non Spektrum smart batteries with this charge and still be able to balance the cells correctly?

Backwards Compatible

For those using the popular EC3 and EC5 connectors, there’s no need to worry. The IC connector series is entirely backwards compatible with existing connectors so you can use your Smart Charger with older batteries, but only when connected to a Spektrum Smart Battery are all the benefits of Smart technology obvious
