Default Age of Sanyo Cells?

Guys, I just bought a bunch of Sanyo KR1400AE nicads, and I want to find out when they were manufactured. Does anyone know how to determine the age of Sanyo nicads?

Thanks,
Rick

There should be a two character date code.
First character, year Y=94, Z=95, A=96, B=97, C=98, D=99, E=00, F=01, G=02, H=03, J=04, K=05, L=06, M-07, N=08, O=09 etd.
Second character = month A=Jan, L=Dec
ZF=95 June

Thank you, Mr. Scholefield. I'll compare your info with my cells tonight to obtain their age. I've read (perhaps on your site) the shelf life of nicads is 8 years, so I'd like to make sure I'm not using cells 10+ years old unnecessarily.

Well, I may have gotten shafted with these cells. The date code is EA on each of the cells, so it looks like they were manufactured in January of 2000.

You won't be the first one. People are buying up scrap batteries, production overruns, salvaged cells, and putting them back on the market. It is not Sanyo's fault.

I don't blame Sanyo, I blame http://batterystation.com/

I specifically told them I do not want old cells before they shipped them to me. They said they did not know how to identify the age of the cells, and that the cells age technically begins when they are put in service. I'll speak with them tomorrow and see what they say about the info you provided regarding the date codes.

Am I wrong in claiming 8 year old Sanyo nicads, unused or not, are too old to be using in airborne receiver packs? Is there any proof I can provide them of nicad shelf-life limitations?

Thanks,
Rick

I bought a 4.8 pack from cheapbatteries.com( sanyos) and they won't hold a charge for nothing. They are shrink wrapped so I can't see the date on them

The established mean time to failure for Ni-Cds has been 7 years. Age technically begins the day they are made. Anyone in the business that doesn't know the age of their product shouldn't be in business (other than maybe on Wall Street). The data on cell life was generated by General Electric Battery Business Division. Why would you put on a date code in the first place if service life was not time dependent?

Thanks, Mr. S. Good point - I'll use it in my argument. I would be foolish to use cells that are 9 years old.

As soon as they open this morning, I'll give them an opportunity to make it right.

Mr. S., Tower has these cells, but their codes are 3-character:

LKS
KBS

How do I translate these?

Thank you sir,
Rick

You've got me. I've not encountered these before. Have you asked Tower?

Yes, sir. They are unable to tell me. The last character - S - is common to both codes, so if you dropped the S, the cells are 1 and 2 years old, respectively.

I tell you, I didn't know it was so cryptic and difficult to obtain the cell's age. Unless you have a tremendous interest in safety, you would give up and just buy whatever these vendors were selling. This has the opposite effect on me - just makes me more suspicious.

I'll try Sanyo in Frisco, TX, and see if they have an answer.

Thank you, Mr. S.

Using the first two characters makes sense. The last character S may be a production code of some type.

Tower Hobbies went above and beyond (again) and went thru their stock in order to supply me with cells mfg. in 2008, so I ordered them.

These suppliers have no idea how old their stock their stock may be. They are unknowingly selling us old cells, and I feel it is up to us to educate ourselves as to just when our batteries were mfg. Our application is critical, especially for those who do not use redundant systems. If a cell drops out of your 4-cell pack in a single-pack system, you will lose control of your airplane.

Regardless of the age of the cells, under normal battery maintenance you will get plenty of warning when they are no longer flight worthy.

This was the info Sanyo provided regarding the cells age:

LKS was manufactured in November 2007
KBS was manufactured in February 2006
