Default Triton2 and A123 cells

I would like to use A123 packs but do not want to purchase another charger. The Trition2 that I have does charge Lipos and Li-Ion packs, but I was told that A123 packs should NOT be charged with this charger. I thought A123 packs were Li-Ion. Am I wrong?

Hey Cattail.

In order for you to charge A123 or LiFe batteries (same thing) you will need a charger that is designed to charge those specific batteries. The A123 batteries are NOT Li-Ion batteries.

I use a Hyperion EOS0606i AC/DC charger for the A123 batteries. Any charger that is designed to charge A123 batteries will work fine.

Hope that helps,

Mike

You can charge them as lithium ions. I charge mine as Lipo at times. Downside is lifecycle is reduced a bit. Not that I notice though. The cells are spec'ed for 4.2v max per cell.

But if you are unsure about yourself, you can monitor the voltage yourself. Once it hits 3.6V per cell, just stop the charger. When the 3.6V is reached, it doesn't take too long for it to hit 4.2v. Another cool thing I like to do is, charge them up to 4V and let them rest. The battery just balances itself out after that.

Cattail;

A123 batteries are NOT LiIon batteries. A123's are Lithium Nanophospate batteries, also referred to as Life. If you want to read some good info on A123's go to www.hangtimes.com. Also, if you are going to invest in these batteries, I would get a Cellpro Multi 4 charger.

Thanks for the info guys. I have been looking at the FMA charger, looks like it would be easy to use and it would cover all the battery types out there.... Also, the Hyperion EOS0606i looks pretty good too. I should have understood more about batteries before I purchased the Triton2. At that time the only battery I was using was NiCad. Live and learn I guess!

We all learn.
Depending on what charge rate/capacity of A123 you can get the $25 type charger from Hobby City or OKhobby They handle NIMH, PB, NICD, LIPO. Lion, LIFE no problem and you can buy 3 for under $100 including shipping possibly.
I have a Battman, and Accucel-6, and a Thunder AC6(AC/DC input, $55) and they all work well
