RE: eneloop battery build
No need to discharge before soldering them. Do use due caution when soldering though as it is easy to ruin the seal at the positive end if you get it to hot. Make sure every thing is very clean and shiny, put on a bit of flux and pretin the area to be soldered using a heavy duty iron; i.e. one with a lot of thermal mass as you want to heat the local area to be tinned very quickly and then get the heat source removed quickly. Now tin the wire lead to be soldered and lay it in contact with the pretinned cell. Again, using a high thermal mass iron that is up to temperature, heat the two components simultaneously that have been pretinned tinned until you see the solder reflow. No need for additional solder. Remove the heat source from the joint and let it cool. As with any Nixx battery, do a forming charge, even if they are supposedly precharged, before using them. A forming charge is defined as charging at 0.1C for 15 to 16 hours, no need to discharge prior to doing the forming charge.
