Default Old futaba Radio - still legal?

Been out of the sport for about 10 years. Have the following euipment:

Saito 45 MKII
Piper Cub (clipped wing)
Futaba 4 Channel - frequency 72.870 - channel 54 I think

All this stuff "used to fly"! A friend of mine is getting into the hobby and has given me the desire to go fly again. I have "revived" the motor and have "refurbished" the plane. Is the radio still legal?

Thanks in advance,

Viper-

If the radio was bought new by at least midyear 1990, it should have the gold sticker on the back for the 1991 narrow band rule.

PS:
Goes without saying, replace all the nicads.

No gold sticker...Radio South in Florida can convert it to narrow band. Ask O.S. for the email address, I don"t have it any more.

WIth the price of batteries and conversion, You can just buy a new radio system cheaper and have more new technology. The old stuff ain't worth the up grade.

Just my $0.02 worth

I second perdo's comment. A new 4 ch basic radio is the way to go. You may even be able to use the old servos (might need an adapter)

I have an old Futaba transmitter (Fp-T4L) that I replaced this year with a 7CAP. It was also neccessary to replace the old receiver as it did not work with the new transmitter.

If you are upgrading the transmitter plan to also replace the receiver and servos (different connections)

TG, if you are only out 10 years you should be fine. The rules went into effect in 91 (?). And you should be good. The sticker was rectangular or trapazoidial and not always gold. My Aristocraft radio I am now looking at says "R/CMA rf check AMA" and is dated 6 -89. If you have the tag you are ready to go.

Everyone is right. The cost of updting a non-narrow banded radio would excede the cost a new basic unit. Good luck and welcome back.

Our local hobby shop carries an MPI adapter to convert the servos to the new connection for about $3.

Now, as to radio. I bought a new radio ($200) when I came back in but within a year I upgraded to the 9C ($400) and that's all I use now. The other sits unused. Appraise yourself carefully as you might save money in the long run by buying the big radio in the first place. I figure my 9C cost me $600.
