Default Shop Taking shape, waiting for 1st plane!

As I eagerly await the arrival of my first kit (Sig LT-40) I've been busy renovating a room in my house as a build shop. It's coming along. The bench is ready. I was lucky enough to get a hold of a bench that was not being used at my workplace. It's welded stainless steel, it weighs a ton and is solid as a rock!! On top of the steel top (which was a bit dented and wavy) I laid a sheet of 3/4X4X8 MDF board and on top of that are 4 2x4 high density ceiling tiles. I like the way it turned out[8D]! Last night I hung a fluorescent light fixture above it for better visibility. I've assembled some tools and supplies but need more. Some, like the finishing sealing iron and heat gun are coming next week as well. On the picture you can see the beat up little Guillow's Cessna 150 that started it all (I know it shouldn't be painted Piper Cub yellow!
So I just need for the postman to hurry up and I can get building, the plane should be here by the first of the week....it's like waiting for Christmas when you're a kid!!

Nicely done! I started with the LT also but did not and do not have building quarters like yours. Enjoy it. By the way I still use the LT for instructing students, it is a great choice for the first build.

Very nice! I am curious though... I cant tell from the pics, what did you cover the seams between your ceiling tiles with?

I just used packing tape, it's thin enough so it doesn't form a "bump". It may not be needed really as the tiles tend to stick to the steel pretty good.

you might want to consider a small fan to blow away ca fumes so that they do not get to you while building

Looks good.
Take a picture once or twice a year so that you can see how your shop has progressed

That fan idea sounds like a good one....I have no experience with CA but I've read some reporst on how nasty it is. I guess good ole' carpenters glue is not "in" anymore eh?

Awesome shop!! I just started in RC too. I am almost done building my first kit. I am covering my Great Planes PT-40 right now. I hope to have everything done by the first week of April when the weather starts to get nicer here in Michigan. I have a work shop in the corner of my garage. I plan to hang my planes from the ceiling in the garage. Building this plane has been a great experience for me. I am sure you will love it!

Hey jrg167: How's the covering job going?? That's the one thing that has me scared!! I know I can build a craft but I've never covered one with anyhing but dope and tissue before. This Monokote and heat gun stuff has me a bit worried

It's going good once I got the hang of it. The wing is the hardest part to cover in my opinion. I ended up buying a video on how to cover with monkote at the hobby store. That really helped me a lot. Also, If you know someone who has experience in modeling, ask for help.

Is that carpet under your table? Definitely would not work for me - I tend to spill all kinds of things and need to be able to wipe it up....... good luck on the Lt 40!

My problem with carpet is dropping small pins, losing them in the carpet thread, and then finding them with my bare feet!!! [X(]

The carpet is old and already has stains so I'm not too worried about the mess that more than likely be on it soon! I never thought about dropped pins going through my foot though! Guess I'm wearing shoes in the shop Man I can't wait till that plane gets here!
