Father/Son 4* 60 Build
A few weeks ago I had a thread about the difference between the .40 and .60 Sig 4 Stars. Decided to get the 60 size. I also decided to use a Tower Hobbies .75 ball bearing 2 stroke. Ordered the plane yesterday and should have it in a week or so. This is going to be a father/son project with my 8 year old son. He has been learning to fly on my LT-40, and I'm hoping to teach him modeling skills as well. I haven't completely settled on a design for the covering, but I'm leaning to something similar to what Hogs Head did with his LT-40. Really liked the see through effect, but will do it with red instead of blue.

Onlyb,
Great!!! We can't wait to see you build take shape. I don't know what could be better than doing with your son. I'm sure both of you will have a great time doing it. Just remind him that CA'ing dad's hand to the workbench isn't quite as funny as it he might think it could be!!!!
Keep us posted on your progress.

Some insight on the TH 75 engine: The engine is very hard to turn over the first time. As someone suggested, I ended up tieing the plane down at home and heating the engine head with a heat gun to expand it a bit prior starting it the first time. It turns over much easier this way and after the engine has run a couple of minutes it loosens up a bit and turns over normally when trying to start. The engine actually made a bit of a clicking noise for the first couple of minutes running. After that the noise cleared up and the engine ran really well. My engine has been very reliable and it puts out good power. I ran mine in a Kaos 60 to test the air worthiness and it passed with flying colors. If it didn't, I wouldn't trust it in my Stuka. It should be a really good match for the 4* 60!

Fastsky, thanks for the info on the engine. It should be helpful. Starting to get itchy to build. Plane should be here end of the week or early next week.

Sounds good. I ordered another TH 75 engine myself to replace a ringed engine of another brand that has never run right. Its going into my Modeltech P47. Should get it off the ground nicely.

RE: Father/Son 4* 60 Build
Well, seems my 4* 60 build has a new dimension. My wife want's the garage to herself for her woodworking. She did say she would clear out the back room though for me to use. I'm going to build a hobby worktable that I have plans for at the same time I'm starting the 4* (when it gets here). I'll add pics of the table if people are interested in seeing that build as well.

The plans call for plywood (I'm going to use OAK) and I'm going to use MDF for the surface. I'm going to build the plane on celing tile, that way it's portable. I'll add pics then when I start on my hobby table.

RE: Father/Son 4* 60 Build
I used a hollow-core door for my table, but added some 3/8 plywood to the underside where I attached a set of folding banquet table legs. Works quite well, and should soon see yet another Four Star 60 in progress on it...MY first full kit project...if you don't count a couple of little Guillows I did as practice...
I'm looking forward to your progress reports, onlyb!

RE: Father/Son 4* 60 Build
OK, My 4* came today. Really surprised, showed up a day earlier than what the said was the earliest date. Can't complain about that. I've started on my hobby table, don't have anything worth taking a pic of yet (just been cutting wood), but after I sand a few things I'll be gluing up the !QUOT!Cubby Section.!QUOT! After that I have the !QUOT!Vertical Storage!QUOT! section and the top to finish the table part, and then have a wall mounted storage area as well to build. Hope to have the table done by late next week. As soon as I get something assembled I'll post some pics.
Oh, the plans for the 4* 60 say to only use a .60 or .65 2-stroke. I was planning on using a .75 2-stroke, will this be a problem?

The .75 will be fine. I am putting a ST G-90 in mine and have it on good authority that that is fine as long as you no where the throttle stick is

OK. Started gluing the Cubby Cabinet together. Took pics, but there will be a delay while I find the cord to connect my camera to the computer. I will post them as soon as I find it. Hope to have the lower (table) part of my Hobby Center done by next weekend so I can start on my 4*.

RE: Father/Son 4* 60 Build
OK, have run into a problem posting pics. When my family went on vacation this summer we took all our dig camera stuff. Unfortunately left the cord to connect to the computer at my mother-in-laws house. She said she would send it to us, but not sure when it's going to get here. I will take pics as I go and post them when I am able. I have started building the 4* and have most of the right wing done. I have both lower cabinets for the hobby table built, just need to get some more wood to finish it.

RE: Father/Son 4* 60 Build
Well, I got the cord for my camera, so I can now start posting pics. The first set are the hobby table I'm building. It's from plans from a "Better Homes and Gardens" woodworking book. The rest show the progress I'm making on the 4*. Had a good build day today, have most of both wings completed, just need to re-enforce with more CA at the joints, and then join the wings together.

Very nice start, and real nice to involve your son with the building process. Reminds me of when I was younger getting introduced to the hobby with my father. Oh what great times we had. Really nice to get the young ones involved. Enjoy the fun times you two have accomplishing your goal of finishing a craft together. [sm=thumbup.gif] Can't wait to see more posts. BTW how old is your son?

Good to see a family project. Be sure to run a fan to keep the CA fumes out of your son's (and your) lungs. CA builds fast but many people have nasty reactions to it. I prefer a good wood glue like Tite Bond II myself. Your son looks real happy with his work and should be.

Cool! It's going to be a lot of fun for both of you.
I second Bruce's comments... wood glue is much better(for several reasons). Looking forward to seeing more progress. [sm=thumbup.gif]

Cute boy, nice to see him taking the project so seriously yet patiently. You can see on his face how serious he is - and doing most of the work himself at only 8, very nice to see. And as you can see in the last photo he is very proud of his accomplishment [sm=thumbup.gif][sm=thumbup.gif][sm=thumbup.gif], and the wing is so neat for a child so young, wish I could keep my work that neat Looking forward to seeing more.
