near hit (birds)
I have witnessed a mid-air for the first time and was difficult for each flyer to take it. 10 min. later they were over it. A couple of days later I was on my buddy box and was about 10 ft. from hitting the bird. for the past week I've been asking everyoune at the club if they had ever hit a bird. So now I bring my question to you. Have you hit or seen anyone hit a bird before.
Thanks, Dave Trimmer

Nope....
But a club member, (former prez), hit one at full speed with his combat plane. Landed safely, sorta....repairs were needed, with some feathers and blood on the plane.
Pretty sure the bird didn't make it....dropped like a rock.
Shhhhhhh

I once hit a dove with a Control Line combat wing. It was going about 120mph at the time, and I'd assume the dove was going about 60mph.
My combat plane didn't even slow down.
The dove did.
Matter of fact, it came to a dead stop in a very short distance.

I used to work in Miami. The building was directly West of Miami International under one of their most active approaches. Every day there would be two lines of bigold aluminum birds coming into MIA at the minimum separation.
Nearby was one of the famous Miami buzzards' roosts. A couple of times a day, the huge flock of buzzards would hitch into a thermal and make an excellent funnel of birds. And from our building it always looked like there was no way the big aluminum buzzards weren't going to feather the big black ugly ones. But the birds always knew when to turn their altitude into distance, well, almost always.
BTW, the buzzards' other favorite roost was downtown. On a GOVERNMENT building. Quite appropriate.

Yes , i have had a midair with a feathered bird. It was an Eagle. I was doing a maiden flight with my new Cloud Dancer, still trimming it out. I was at 300 feet turning 180 degrees when i caught site of the Eagle, it looked close, so i banked the other way. It also banked , but unfortunately it banked in my direction and we collided. The end result , one totalled sircraft, one Eagle minus a lot of feathers, and some heavy bruising, but it managed to survive.

I do remember a bird strike on a real aircraft. I was a Navy aircraft electrician, many years ago, working on A-6 Intruders. We had one of our aircraft come in one day with a perfect 3" diameter hole (I mean it was pefectly round) in the radome (nose of aircraft) with 2 little bird feet hanging down from the bottom of the hole. Kind of seemed funny at the time and everyone got a laugh out of it (everyone except the radar tech. )

I've never actually hit a bird, since I dive everytime I see a hawk nearby. Although, one of our club members was flying thermals with his E-Flite Tribute 3D and hanging out with a large group (maybe 20) hawks. The pilot said that the hawks accepted the Tribute as one of them.

I know you are refering to RC planes hitting birds but I am in the US Air Force and have had the oportunity to see the results of a few bird strikes. The little ones end up looking like a larger version of that splattered bug on your cars' windshield. A Canadian mallard will punch a whole in the RADOME (nose) of a C-130 and destroy the radar equipment.
