Scored myself a BRAND NEW in box from the 1970's, a OS .40 FSR. It is a '73 model and comes complete with muffler. Has never been run and still sealed in all plastic. Guy on eBay is selling his whole collection of vintage engines for the price he payed for them back in the old days. He is using that money, to collect other engines...
Cant wait to get this old girl started and flying on my Avistar. Should be really good and I heard nothing but good stuff about these, back in the days...
What do you reackon? Will post pics when engine arrives...

Well I cant complain mate, this guy has a whole collection of brand new in the boxes of vintage model engines.
And for a nice price, its awesome. Cant wait to fly a peice of history on my Avistar. Will these older engines require any much of a break in? I suppose the break in, will be much longer then the newer engines. Is this correct?

According to the OS timeline the 40FSR came out in 1975 and changed to ABx in 1981. If yours is the ringed version then run it in very rich at first and take your time.

Yeah I know, there is no problem with time. Im more than happy to go easy on this engine. Yeah I was refering to the timeline and I could only see the .40 in 1975, but ohh well doesnt matter what year it is. Should be a great running engine hopefully.

A good friend just put that very same engine in a Tower Kaos. He picked the engine up some years ago in a trade as he owns a LHS. He just took the guy at his word that it was just barely broken in, but done right, then never got mounted to a plane. Charlie has sat on it properly stored for all these years until last week. We took it out for a maiden flight on th new Kaos & it fired right up. Just the slightest bit of tuning after warm up had it running great. The plane flew magnificently, no dead-sticks all day & it had all the power the Kaos could want. It turned out to be a great engine. Charlie was very pleased with it. I hope you have similar results from yours.[sm=wink_smile.gif]

Actually, those OSs back then were very well made. You will probably be wasting fuel to run it very sloppy rich. Matter of fact, most engines back then didn't really break in at all during the sloppy rich running. You want to run it rich, and that'll be about perfect.
The way those old ones are different from today is what actually breaks them in. Back then, letting them cool down between runs was a major player in the breakin. Today, we twiddle the needle on the breakin run from rich to lean to rich to lean and that works the metals from the heat changes in those first few runs.
But like downunder said, take your time. Each of the first runs just insure that it's not leaned out. If any needle setting results in it starting to tighten up, richen it up and then shut it down. Let it cool and you've actually had a good cycle.

Awesome news! Well I cant wait for it to arrive in the post. Should be tomorrow or the next day. Im really gonna be careful with this engine, I want it to last atleast another decade or so. My mates dad, still runs his planes with OS engines dating back to the early 60's. And still fire right up. As with all nitro/glow engines, heat cycling is one the most important, then just letting an engine idle a tank of fuel, so it wears in. Not the case...and I will trust you about the old methods of break in for these old engines. This would be my first ring engine, so I hope all goes well.

G'day Mate,
Where did ya get it from, I could do with a new/ old OS 61FSR ABC, I wore mine out after 25 years running, chrome wore off the liner.
