How is everyone today?
Got a random question for ya'll. I have an Avistar that I am working on rebuilding with two sets of wings and I have just finished most of the repairs on the fuse (Still have to glue the rudder back in.) and I have started thinking about adding an egg drop to this plane. There are two clubs in the general area where I live and one does fly-ins fairly frequently and egg/flower drops seem to be a popular event. Most guys who do this seem to be using sport planes with open cockpits where they place the egg or they wedge the egg into it somewhere. I am told that one guy has even built a box that he straps to the bottom of this plane that is big enough to hold about anything he thinks to put in it.
I haven't dug too deep into this plan but I am trying to figure out if I can install a drop system into the back of the Avistar fuse that would be big enough to hold one egg with a little bit of padding. Nothing too special, but I am not sure where to begin with this.
This plane is a tri gear and I will not be changing it to a tail dragger any time soon so I suppose that gives a bit more clearance in the back. I am worried about landing with a set of doors open below the fuse. Also worried about how this will affect the balance of the plane. I might end up adding a bigger fuel tank and receiver battery to help balance this thing out then.
So, any thoughts on designs or on how I should start?

Build a box to mount on the top right at the CG then you don't have to worry about the CG. Build a flat plate with small dowels in each corner to hook rubber bands on to hold it on when needed.
Then mount a box on the plate and mount a servo on the box to activate the hatch. Plug the servo into an extra outlet put an egg in the box and go bombing. Roll the plane inverted when you are ready to drop. If you hinged the hatch right it will close back up when you roll back over.
If you mount an egg drop under the plane, chances are you will have a real hard time getting the CG right unless you can mount it at the CG. An egg is heavy and will change the CG a lot.
I have a set up where I can mount 3 different releases on the bottom, ( 2 different sized boxes and a Sky diver release ) but mine was built to do it and they are right on the CG.
ENJOY !!! RED

Ugg.... I hate to have to build something to sit outside of the plane. I wanted this to be somewhat hidden so it wouldn't be painfully obvious that I hate a surprise up my sleeve.
But you make a valid point about the CG. I could re-balance for varing loads, but it would be a bit of a hassle. I will look and see what all is located int he fuse under the CG, maybe I can make something work there.
