On my stock nexstar if i about 30% throttle it around the field at slow speed, I can go around 15 min. I can imagine any plane with a modified Fuel tank and go much longer.

I never had long flights On my twist, So cant really comment on that plane.

Im sure there are some giant scales that could probably go 60 min lol

My Great Planes Slow Poke 40 (OS 52 Surpass 4-stroke) can fly for 30-35 minutes on a tank of fuel. Although I am a bit curious as to why you are asking this. For the most part 10-15 minutes is about the best time for flying. After that your eyes and hands start to get tired from the flying. After you start getting tired it's easier to make mistakes and crash, especially for beginners. Trust me, for a beginner 15 minutes can be an eternity in the air.

My slope glider will stay up as long as I can keep my thumbs on the sticks and as long as the wind blows. And, it does essentially everything the powered planes do, except take-off ...

How long can you fly your twist for? I wanted something around the size of the nexstar that would average about 20 minutes if I could with all kinds of throttle conditions.

How long to people usually fly for before they feel its time to bring it in for the day?

Yeah, my Fusion with a OS 50 SX can fly about 20-25 mins but it was too long for me so I swapped out the stock tank and put on one that's 8 oz instead of 10. 20 mins is too long for me. Besides one thing to consider is that if you are flying at a flying club field you end up taking up too much time at a station and other people want to fly.

That's different. I fly as long of a day as I can. Our field opens at 10:00 and closes at the latest at 7:00 and I'll sometimes be there all day.

I think it would be nice to have a plane I could keep up for about 15-20 minutes and not worry about it.

A friend of mine has a Twist with an OS 46 LA, and he easily flies for 25-30 minutes.

Would that be the Hangar 9 Twist?

You're going to find it very hard to keep the Nexstar up for longer than 15 minutes, even if you go easy on the throttle.

Yes, that's the one. I couldn't believe it at first, how long he could fly with the stock tank, but there you are. And I used to think 20 minutes with my old trainer was a long time.

There are a ton of factors here - how big is the fuel tank, what engine are you using, what fuel are you using, what throttle settings are you flying the plane at, how is it tuned......

I have a Sig MK II trainer that can stay in the air for at least 30 min - but it has a big tank and a small .25 LA motor and I do not fly it at full throttle. I also have a PT-40 with a .46 FX and a smaller tank, that will run for about 12 - 15 mid depending on how fast I fly it. I also know that very long flights are 100% possible. A couple of years ago an Glow plane flew across the Atlantic (on an auto pilot setting) taking over 30 hours. I am not sure that as a beginner I would want to stay in the air much longer than 15 min - that is a long flight for a newbi.

Does the different nitro content make a big difference in flight time?

No. Actually, for trainer engines, nitro content makes very little performance difference.

Skilled glider pilots can regularly keep their powered gliders up for over an hour.

I have a GP Bigstik (old version ARF) with a .46 FX on the nose and a 10 oz. tank. I have flown it for over 45 minutes before. This is not all under power, actually I really like to fly it around for about half-3/4 tank doing aerobatics and shooting landings, then take it up as high as I can see it then kill the engine and trim it to fly at best glide hands-off, steering with the occasional bump of rudder. I love that plane, and wish GP hadn't changed to the newer version of their Stik ARF. This is my third after I wore out a GP Stik kit.

I was wondering if I few people could tell me a few planes that will fly longer then 20 minutes on a tank of fuel?
I have read of records where guys will fly power gliders through several charges of transmitter batteries. They get into a thermal and it carries the plane up, then they get out of the thermal and spiral down, until it's time to catch another thermal.

One friend had several transmitter batteries, so he could be charging one and flying off a fresh battery. He told of a Multiplex setup that could be powered from a remote battery for hours.

Good luck,
Dave Olson

Ken
I can routinely keep my NextStar (OS .46 AX) up for 20 minutes, and if I shoot a lot of touch-n-go's then that figure can jump close to 30 minutes. I've done that numerous times. If you fly the NextStar at 1/2 throttle (or a notch or two below half) you should easily hit the 20 minute mark.

a 15 yrs old 4* 40 with an even older Saito 45 four banger that runs 25+ min @ WOT on a 12oz tank, normal flying and touch-and-goes I've gone 45 min and landed with fuel left, i guess it makes up for the Diamond Dust w/ Jett FIRE 60LX that gets 4 min on 6oz.

There are RC endurance long-distance flying contests held every year. I think someone flew from Corona to like Needles or something like that...(over 200 miles) with a Kadet senior, a very small engine, lots of fuel, two transmitters, and a bunch of battery.

Sounds like fun to me, but hours of 'barely flying' would get tiresome pretty quickly.

I have heard that some of the glider guys have contests which can last all day on a single launch.

Personally, after a 15 minute flight, forcing my plane into doing things that are simply un-natural for an airplane to do, I need a dang break!

I have a 16 ounce fuel tank in GP PT-60 and I could easily get over a half hour flight with an MDS .68 Pro on the nose. If you want longer flight times, just see how big of a fuel tank you can fit in your plane. The instructions for my trainer list a 12 ounce tank and I was able to fit a 16 ouncer in it.

The Nexstar comes standard with a 9oz./270cc fueltank. Simply upgrading to a 12oz/360cc fuel tank should increase your flight time by 33%.
