yetti831,
While I certainly find myself in agreement with nearly everything said here, I'm going to go a different direction:
When does one use the rudder? EXCLUSIVELY, for one flight a day. Meaning this:
Head out to the field for a day. For one flight (first, last, middle, whenever..just pick one) fly the entire flight with Rudder and Elevator only. Don't use the ailerons.
When you reach the point that the rudder/elev flight looks indistinguishable from one with ailerons, and you complete the entire thing, from takeoff to landing, never touching the ailerons...trust me...you'll know when and how to use the rudder.

HERE HERE! As an instructer I really agree with this concept! Also I have experienced that early use of rudder in the learning process will allow better and safer windy day flying... there fore more flying IMHO

I forgot to tell you that when I bought the book on Amazon, I was given the opportunity to get it electroncially too... meaning that I can log into Amazon.com and go to their electronic reading section and continue where I left off with my reading. Neat thing. So, I will have the hard copy plus the ability to read it while on line when I may not have my hard copy with me.

Can't wait to hear what you guys have to say about it as you get into it
And yeah, Dick...I LOVE Amazon's recent drive to offer as much electronically as possible. It's a nice way to, in theory at least, be able to take your whole library with you anywhere you go.
