Bomb bay on my tower Hobbies Trainer
So I got bored over the holidays and decided to mess around with my trainer. I don't really fly it much since I only got it to let my friends fly on the buddy box. So I decided to fabricate a bomb drop system for it to use at the local feld. I designed it to hold small flower bombs or golf balls. I figured this was as good a forum to put it in since so many of this forums readers have trainers. This just goes to show that if your trainer survives the flight training stage it is still useful! I fabricated this set up out of some scrap balsa and covering material. I used an old servo I had laying around to open and close the doors. I also used some really thin piano wire and some small pieces of PVC for door pushrods and control horns. It is not perfect but not bad for my first try!
Here is some pics and a short video clip I uploaded.

Neat! I'd like to try that with my EagleII, I have a cool little parachute I'd
like to drop. You've got the little gears in my head turning![sm=50_50.gif]

Golf balls. Humm i am glad i don't fly where you fly. One pop in someone head with one of them and you will never see the light of day again. Good luck

I have some little para troopers that I drop out of mine. Golf Balls might be not such a good idea as they could cause some one to get hurt our property damage could occur. I also like to fill mine up with bird seed and sunflower seeds. Good Luck, Dave

One version I have seen has a hinge at the back of the hatch. A servo releases a rubber band to open the hatch. The hatch stays open until the pilot lands the plane. We have a grass runway so it does not hurt the hatch to drag the ground when landing. He has dropped flour, bubble gum, and candy.

The only reason I can use golf balls for my bomb bay is because we are at a huge open field with no building or vehicles around. So the golf balls will be fine. I am planning to make some small flower bombs as well.

Here is one that i did on a low wing stick. The plane is sitting upside down in the picks, but you can get the idea.
I dropped 6 paratroopers out for my son. He loved it.
Here is a video also. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UILdxnP-oqU

Great job on your design! It looks really cool how you integrated it into the airframe. I am going to hopefully try mine out tomorrow and see where the improvements need to be made.

You could use ping pong balls, those won't hurt a fly. They make backyard practice golf balls that are just like ping pong balls that I got 8 for $2 at the local sporting goods store.

Aside from the issue of hitting someone with a real golf ball, I think the little plastic ones would be better, just because of the weight, real golf balls are pretty heavy and dropping them would make a significant change in the c/g of the plane.

I think its cool how you got it to work. My suggestion, make some parachute guys using clothespins and some model rocket parachutes. Could be fun.
