Winter Project
hey guys i am starting to look for a winter project for the build season and i am wanting to build a gas plane kit... have been looking at the great planes 89 inch decathalon but i would perfer like a edge 540 or a extra what companys out there still have kits </p> |

First go look at the sticky in the kit building forum. Then ask the question there and I bet you will get some info. PCK isn't the best way for a beginner to go.

Neither is a big plane like the Dynaflite Decathlon. I've built this plane and it's definetely not a begginer's build. Just like flying planes your building skills need to start simple and progress as your skills improve. One plane that I think is one of the best kits to start building is the Sig Something Extra. This kit is an absolute dream to build and a ton of fun to fly. The only problem right now is that finding one of these kids may be a chore as Sig is a bit behind. Sig 4-Star 40 or 60 or a BTE Venture 60 would also be great as first builds as well that result in fun planes to fly.

If it helps - I bought a Somethin' Extra and a spare fuse kit from Sig a week ago. It should be turning up here any time. If you do build it - read the instructions. I did not and ended up building a banana out of the fuse. The instructions are to put it all together which elastic bands THEN glue from the INSIDE. I did this when I built a Four Star 40 subsequently and it works brilliantly. No glue on the outside makes sanding really easy and it ended up straight. Also when you come to fly it, make sure your first flight is on Low Rates and about 30% exponential on the ailerons really helps to tame this flighty bird. Mine was a bit off square and wanted to roll as a result and my attempts at correcting it just made things worse. Fortunately I managed to get some height, then trim it and land. I dialed in about 60% expo but this was WAY too much and made it really doughy to fly so I reduced it to 30% and it was great. Also, don't make my other mistake (which killed the plane) and put the switch in the removable hatch. I sold it to a friend and he was letting another friend fly it when the hatch came loose, the switch un plugged and you can guess the rest. It had a Saito 56 in it and this was a really good combination. I was expecting it to be fairly slow but the Saito really hauled it around. We are going to build another one and repair the old one with a new fuse. Wing damage was minor but the wing tube bent so I have bought a spare for that too. I really like Sig's spare parts arrangement. |
