RE: $5 airplane
Glad you could fix it up. It looks like a very nice airplane. Kinda like a big stick, at least the top wing with no dihedral part of does.<hr />http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/js/f...bananahead.gif

RE: $5 airplane
Actually no, I looked at the picture wrong. its not a high winger. I guess Ineed to look closer.http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/js/f...unge_smile.gif

ORIGINAL: summerwind Jeeez.....you do realize that Chuck is doing this to give inside tips to beginners on how to repair and maintain their planes right? he is being quite generous with his time. anyone who has done a build thread can tell it takes almost as much time to do the thread as it does the build. Chuck is also the kind of guy that he is likely to give this plane to someone for free and has no interest in making money on it................ |

ORIGINAL: summerwind you're RIGHT!!.....how dare he for taking advantage of this great site by taking the time to post a ''how to'' thread for beginners, and then using it for financial gain..... I didn't say anything about the repair, the viability of using it for financial gain other than saying it wouldn't be worth much, or this fellows altruistic nature. I made a simple declarative statement about the worth of a used airframe such as this one. Stop being a jerk and reading more into what I wrote than I actually wrote. Words matter. Read them. |
RE: $5 airplane
Chuck,
let me know if you guys decide to sell this one.....i'm looking for a plane for one of my 40FSR's. -mike |
RE: $5 airplane
The goal is to have it at the club swap meet in October. If it is, the price will be very reasonable; If I get enough to buy a servo or two, a gallon or two of fuel or whatever that's good enough for me.
Still have to edit the wing pictures. Between flying, the lawn and the gym today, I just haven't had time to sit down and do it. I was looking through my box of covering last night. If I go ahead and use my remnants without buying anything new, it might end up looking like the Partridge family bus. I think I might have some flat olive drab in the closet though. If I do, I might do a pseudo-military covering job.<br type="_moz" /> |
RE: $5 airplane
Iwas thinking of doing that with a 60 size Ugly Stick. I have some OD green and white and thought a Japanese Zero scheme might look decent.
The covering on the big ugly is well, ugly. |
RE: $5 airplane
I might even have enough red, white and black to do the P-40 style sharks mouth. I will see.

RE: $5 airplane
ORIGINAL: cutaway Used Skyraiders with LA's are a dime a dozen. Don't get your hopes up on this being a big score on resale. $5 for a running LA ain't a bad deal, but the airframe itself has little value unless you plan to fly it. You'll probably have more $$$ invested in new covering and time than you'd get for the airframe. Ahhhh whatever dude, you're missing the whole point!!!! |
RE: $5 airplane
ORIGINAL: flygilmore Ahhhh whatever dude, you're missing the whole point!!!! I "get" that this is a beginners forum. I also "get" that it might be useful information to tell beginners what the real world value of a kinda busted trash plane like a Skyraider is, so they don't invest much in an albatross unless its just a labor of love they intend to fly and not resell. I "get" that the OP is a great guy, and stands beside Mother Theresa altrusistically. So what aren't I getting? I'll tell you - I can't fracking figure out why you guys keep attacking. |
RE: $5 airplane
People, can we please discuss RC aircraft and leave the personal crap out of this thread? Like maybe follow posted RCU policies?
Tom |
RE: $5 airplane
OK... enough of the stupid internet bickering. This is a beginners forum intended to help people starting out in the hobby. Discussions like the ones going on are absolutely not productive and discourage people from asking legitimate questions and enjoying a great hobby.
Cutaway... Iunderstand your original point and I don't necessarilly disagree with you. The manner in which you stated it though wasn't very productive or helpful for soemone trying to pick up good information. That's why a couple people probably seemed to jump on you. Getting in an argument with someone you've never met behind a computer screen several thousand miles away is really a waste of time. If you have anything productive to offer regarding the subject of repairing common airplane damage or resurecting an old plane, please join in. Otherwise, stay out of the thread. |
RE: $5 airplane
The productive part inspired me. Gonna build a new tail birdcage for my cracked up Kadet Seniorita.
BTW had some left over Moneycoat so I did her in a WWII Brit trainer scheme. Tan and green camo on top and yellow underneath. Looked kinda neat. Tom |
RE: $5 airplane
Sorry no updated information or pictures. It is starting off to be a very busy week so I've only been able to sit at the computer for a couple minutes here and there. Wednesday night is free though so I will edit the wing pictures and post the progress.

RE: $5 airplane
Imay take you up on that when it comes time to cover. I know what I want to do with my scraps but I may not have enough which would force me to change the plans.

RE: $5 airplane
Chuck,
Do the camo on top with your scraps and do solid white or pale blue underneath fuse, horiz stab and wing. Tom |

You'll probably have more $$$ invested in new covering and time than you'd get for the airframe. I picked up a kit built ACE 4-40 biplane at an RC swap meet a couple years back. It flies great. Without negotiating, I paid $20. Saito 65 added separately. My kid stepped on the stabilizer last week, but that's OK, it's only a toy airplane sitting in the living room. I guess I'll start needed repairs now too. Thanks for posting your work! |

OK, wing pictures as promised. Basically it just had on missing wing tip trailing edge block, a broken rib and several loose glue joints.

Been a while without an update. Basically all the repairs are finished except for the fuel tank and line setup. I got started on the covering using rolls of flat olive drab and gray Monokote left over from other projects. I decided not to post all the covering details since there are already good instructions here on RCUniverse:
http://www.rcuniverse.com/magazine/a...?article_id=67 http://www.rcuniverse.com/magazine/a...article_id=726 Here are a couple pictures of the top and bottom of the wing. I did spring for some stars & bars decals. They were just a few bucks. I just noticed a wrinkle in one of them in the picture; stuff happens. I am scrambling to get this airplane finished in time for the club swap meet this Sunday. My new project also arrived tonight. it's a Top-Flite giant scale P-47 ready-to-cover. Should be fun. <br type="_moz" /> |
RE: $5 airplane
Nice job. I think this will be very helpful for others. Nice job showing what a little TLC can do for a plane.

Finally finished up the covering. It was a rush job so it isn't perfect but a heck of a lot better than when I first saw the airplane. I really wanted to do the shark's mouth but I did not have enough covering scraps of the right color plus I am running out of time.
Now to clean out the fuel tank & fix the lines, re-install the engine, put in a battery & temporary receiver then test run it. Looks like I will just make it in time for the club swap meet on Sunday. Picture shows what a mess my garage has turned into. After this one is done it is cleaning time.<br type="_moz" /> |
RE: $5 airplane
Also have to install a canopy. Local hobby shop ordered one from world Models but it won't be available in time. I found a similar one for a Tower Uproar ARF. Less than $3 and should look OK.
