Help with S52A ASP 2-Stroke Glow Engine
 

Hi y'all,

Today I placed the order of my ASP S52A, .52 ci 2 Stroke motor. I'm link of which is pasted below. It would be delivered to me prolly 3 to 7 days, as I'm happy that shipping is free. I have couple of questions about it.

1. Which size prop should I use for break in, I prefer Master AirScrew for breaking-in, for flying I use APC.
2. Which glow plug should I use for it? O.S. 8 or A5 hot plug?
3. I haven't been able to find the instruction manual for it? Where can I find it if anyone knows the link.
4. I wanna use it with Sukhoi 31 Black horse model plane. Which I'm gonna buy hopefully in January 2011:D How's that plane, if anyone has any experience with it.

I have used APC 12x4's and 12.25 x 3.75's on mine...should be a good prop for that engine and airframe combination too.
The 12 x 4 is lighter and puts less load on the engine...would be ok for break-in. Mine revs to 14,000+ with a Tower muffler.

Mine likes a warmer plug...so I would suggest the A5 if that's the one that's most convienient for you. (I use Fox std. long in mine )

Thanks a lot for your suggestions. I'm planning to break-in with Master Airscrew 11X7 and then use APC 11X8 on it. I do like speed, but I'm more fan of a vertical climb, I think 11X8 would give me enough vertical on Sukhoi 31 which I'm gonna buy on new year:D

Hi armody, I hope you enjoy your ASP .52A 2-stroke and get many years of excellent service from it. I've owned and flown the very, very similar Magnum XLS .52A 2-stroke; both engines are manufactured by Sanye.

You might get the engine to break in more quickly on a slightly lighter prop, say an 11x6 instead of an 11x7. Letting the engine rev up and unload during break-in should help it stay cool. You should be able to switch to your 11x7 or 11x8 props after just a couple of initial tanks of fuel.

Which plug will work best will depend on your fuel to some degree. My XLS .52A ran great on fuel with as little as 5% nitro. A hotter plug will likely work better with 5% or 10% nitro, while a medium heat plug like the O.S. No. 8 may work better with 15% nitro fuel. I'm a big fan of Fox glow plugs, and I generally start with Fox R/C Long plugs for my two strokes (medium-hot w/ idle bar) while I use the Fox Miracle plug in most of my 4-strokes.

The BH Models ARFs generally have a very good reputation for quality and flying characteristics. I'm sure you'll like the Sukhoi SU-31 ARF you're considering if you decide to go ahead and purchase one.

Thank you very much for great information. The fuel I'm currently using is 10% Nitro, 5% Nitro is just a difference of $1 or little bit more than a dollar. I'm comfortable with 10%. I'm so happy with my Magnum .46 XLS which I'm using on my Strega 40 and last Sunday switched the prop from 11X6 to 11X7 APC. Ever since I replaced 11X6 to 11X7 my plane flies much more better. Same Sunday I had an accident, cut my left hand's middle finger got 6 stitches.

ASP .52 a lot of people told me that same company makes Magnum and ASP, both are great power house. I do have 11X6 MAS to break-in my ASP .52. I have purchased through www.hobbypartz.com free shipping, I placed order last Sunday, and I still have not received any shipping information yet. I've been trying to call them on their time PST, I kept getting the message call us during normal business hours, I don't know what's going on with them. Are they sister-concerned company of Nitroplanes?

As far as plug is concerned so I have read in the manual of Magnum that they recommend hot plug O.S. #6 formerly A3. I have no idea how come suddenly the prices of glow plugs spiked up from $5 to almost $9.

Another information I got from www.americanpioneerhobbies.com that Sukhoi 31 has been discontinued and the owner was nice enough to call me back, and told me if I may use CAP 232 or Extra 300S.

His prices are excellent and he gives free shipping over $25 order. He has a chart showing glow plug heat range equivalent and you will probably find his 2003 plug is a good hot plug for most sport flying. He even has a really hot 4 stroke plug 2010 that can sort out problem four stroke engines that want to load up at idle.

Made in Chicago just a few hours from my house. Ihave seen his operation and his quality checks , he is serious about glow plugs. All hand assembled with modern machinery and individually tested.

Hi guys,

Today I received my ASP .52 2 Stroke motor. I was so excited, I did the break in today but have not completed it yet. I used MAS 11X7 for break in and bought APC 12X6 for later use in the plane. I have made the video of break in as well, which I'm gonna post it in a bit.

There is something about the engine which I'd like to share with. I purchased this motor thru www.hobbypartz.com good prices
It's ASP .52 2 Stroke and it came with a white box as I was told it was from the factory, it may have not been the commercial product which should have had the ASP name in the box. Second, Engine says 52, Chinese made but it does not say ASP at all, they gave me extra 4 stroke muffler for free which was kinda pleasant surprise:D but I don't know is it right or wrong. I Love Magnum & ASP's as I heard they are both made by the same company in China. I'm posting the pictures please take a look at it y'all and let me know.

I gotta add up one thing, this engine is a great power house, while I was running rich and on full rpm it moved my testing stool or bench which would of a range from 70 to 100 Lbs. Here are the pix and check it out and lemme know.

I am confused. There appears to be a four stroke exhaust in your photos? Third photo across.

That four stroke muffler is NOT for your engine. After all, there is nowhere it would fit. I think you have gotten a little accidental present which fell into the wrong box.

Or, do you also have a Magnum/ASP 52 or 61 four stroke?

I would use an 11 x 6 for running in and for initial flying. Lower load on the engine. I would also use a fuel that has some castor oil in the mix. I have had several Magnum/ASP engines and they all were easier to run initially with some castor. I use 10% nitro, 5% castor, 15% Klotz 200 and 70% methanol as my standard fuel for two and four stroke engines. With 10% nitro, I would use either an Enya #3 plug or one of the Hot Merlin plugs. My new Jett 46 came with a Merlin 2003HD which is the heavy duty version of the 2003 Hot plug. I have ordered some from Merlin's web site and am waiting for them. Very easy to do and the price is excellent.

Thanks for your comments and suggestions. I really appreciate that. You are absolutely right, this is the muffler for 4 stroke motor. I was totally surprised I thought that they may have sent me a pitts muffler lol, but it was not, It may have been a mistake. I have never used a 4 stroke and have been dying for years to use one. The fuel I'm using is 10% Nitro, with mix blend I'm sure Castor oil and some other mix blend. I bought it from my LHS. One thing really got me perplexed that this motor does not have ASP name engraved, it's a great power house.

I'm using 11X7 or 11X6 MAS prop for breaking in, it does not even say what size is it, then planning to use APC 12X6, but I still gotta wait on the plane. I'm using O.S. #6 (formerly A5) Hotplug this is what Magnum or ASP recommend.

I just took a thorough look at the muffler but nothing is written on it not a single dot, It looks like it may fit 52 size four Stroke motor. It does not say anything, so if you would like to buy it, what is the regular market price of it. I'd like to know and I'd appreciate it then you may buy it;)

If it fits a 52 then you just missed out. Ibought one recently for my Enya 60 four stroke. Magnum 52 mufflers are the same diameter and pitch to fit the Enya. It will probably fit an OS 52 Surpass also. A new one costs $22.99 from Hobby People.
I need one for an OS70Surpass, it costs $24.99.

I have this engine in a T34 Mentor.

I run an 11x6 APC and #8 OS plug.

One thing I have read about the ASP engines is that "some" of them leak air around the high speed needle.  Something about the notch in the needle not being right and the rubber o-ring letting it leak.  The easy fix for this is to cut about a 3-4mm long piece of fuel tubing and slip over the outter portion (where you turn it to tune) of the needle and the fitting it goes in to seal it.

I did this to mine before ever running the engine.  Also...if done correctly it will not let vibrations turn the needle by itself when the engine is running.

Although mine is new and only been run for break in on the starting stand, it runs up good and seems to make good power.

I have a 40 size Extra 300s I think I am gonna put another one of these in.  Should do it good.

Ihave to think this engine is the newer XLSseries and not the XL series. Ihad an XL15 which was later replaced with an XLS15 and the performance with very different, the newer engine out performed the older model in every respect.

XLS is new series, I'm using Magnum .46 XLS not XL, the manufacturer are the same.

ATVAlliance, Part breaking in is done, and this weekend I would completely break it in hopefully, did not notice any leak, but it's a good suggesting of fitting the tubing into the high speed needle valve one of my friend did long time ago to my Evolution .45 engine. One engine I would certainly try and it's a tremendous powerhouse, that is Blue colored JBA Engine

I've seen some of the videos of it on youtube it's an absolute power house. Evolution, Magnum, ASP, JBA they are all Chinese made, and China is doing good job. Taiwanese motor Thunder Tiger is great in running as well, they are more expensive than magnum and ASP. There is a long list of purchase:D but I gotta buy me a plane for my ASP .52 first, either Yak or Mustang from Nitroplanes.com
