Why do I love RC aviation? Simple. It's the people!

RE: >Question: Why do you love rc aviation?
I built model cars for years, loved history, thats when I discovered old airplanes. Started building some. Along with battleships, aircraft carriers, and spaceships. I dreamed of being a pilot. I got a control line plane, and crashed it right away. Well that was that, then comes teenage years, girls, cars, jobs and Life. I went to work climbing radio towers for a while, always liked heights. Worked so much most of the time really had no time for anything. Fast forward to now, as of Dec 3rd, I been flying almost everyday weather permitting, sure wish I had gotten back into it sooner. I am also building a 1/48th P-51 and have a crashed sea wolf, and another plane almost complete a man gave us to "practice" on. Have other hobbies but this is something I can enjoy more with the kids, have a 2 year old that can fly pretty good simulator, and has done a loop with my HZ Supercub LOL.

RE: >Question: Why do you love rc aviation?
I first became aware of airplanes at the age of 3 (well at least as far back as I can remember). Iwas at the beach with my folks and I was watching some gulls. Then a load sound of hot gas leaving a pipe drew my attention as a Dassault Breguet Mirage IIIC flew overhead. My dad bought me a plastic kit of the Mirageon the way home and I watched as he assembled it for me with great excitement. 2Years later I was assembling my own plastic kits although very basic one and by age 8 I was assembling rubber and control line airplanes from kits. I recall one of my favourites was a red plane called the "Buster".
By age 12 I had a cabinet full of plastic model airplanes, and the garage roof was filled with rubber powered matchsticks. :) I got a little bored and side tracked by girls from age 14 and I picked up a racing bicycle from then on. when the trauma that was high school was over I tortured myself at Mechanical Engineering school and dabbled with building racing karts and some chassis, engines and suspension. Then I sort of picked up my aviation passion again as I started my first real job at a Naval Weapons development Institute. Istayed there for a year and moved to a semi private defense contractor where I dabbled in rocketry and electro mechanical devices. I learned a bit about RF and EMI there since it was an important environment for my devices to function. I then left that industry and focussed on other hobbies, surfing, Karting, Mountain Biking. Then December 2009 I walked into a hobby store looking for a Christmas gift for my nephew, I walked out with a SAPACWIlga for myself and a little Nine eagles Cessna for he. The Cessna is long since dead and I'm taking my instructors test as soon as the required judges are available. Aviation has been a part of me I think since I was a toddler, all I am doing is following that passion and path. RCaviation simply makes what would otherwise be inaccessible, accessible. Ican exercise my training on a hobby that I have a natural aptitude toward. Its nota matter of love, its a matter of being. To this day I still absolutely love the shape of the Mirage IIIc |
RE: >Question: Why do you love rc aviation?
Since I can remember I've had a love for aviation. All I ever wanted to be was a pilot, and I couldn't think of any better way to make a living than to do it in the air. I was hooked on every flight simulator you could think of for my computer and every air comabt sim available for my Playstation, I WANTED TO FLY! Well, long story short, when I joined the military (with every aspiration of becoming a pilot) I was told that I have a color vision deficiency and that I was not qualified to fly...talk about a blow to the gut. My entire childhood dream of flying came to crashing halt in the 5 minutes it took to do a preliminary eye exam. Fast forward 10 years and a friend I worked with was flying RC helis and I would just stand there in awe as he flew his T-Rex 450 in the football field outside the building during lunch. I said to myself, "I want to fly RC!" So the next week I went ot the hobby shop, bought a Parkzone T-28D and Spektrum DX7 and I was off and running! Haven't looked back since! My wife chuckles every time I'm in the garage playing (as she puts it) with my planes but she's supportive of my "habit". Being in control of an aircraft is something that I've always wanted to do and RC is a way that I can do it. It's hard to explain the addiction, but like was said earlier- for those who understand, no explanation needed.... </p> |

apwachhoiz;
Very good job on asking this question. As you can see how deep the love for RC Aviation and Real Aviation goes!!! For some people who can not fly the full scale for one thing or the other, this is the next step to fill their dreams. For people who don't understand, once the bug bit you, it never go away!! RC Aviation has a big family and it keep growing!! Sonny aka jet22b |
RE: >Question: Why do you love rc aviation?
What if they had rc aircraft carriers that rc pilots can land and take-off on
|
RE: >Question: Why do you love rc aviation?
Being that im just starting in r/c planes, im pretty sure im going to love flying. When I was about7my grandmotherstarted taking me to the local airport to watch small private planes take off and land for hours at a time. I've always been facinated by flight. When Iwas 16, I put together an arf trainer and bought a built bipe from a hobby shop. Thought there was nothing to it, went down to the beach during the off season, huge parking lot, crashed both of them inside of 30 minutes. I picked up the pieces, grabbed the Tx and the field box, walked over to this big dumpster that was there and that was the end of flying for me. Now that im 43, im gonna give it another go...with an instructor this time!!! Im pretty good on the sim so im psyched to go learn soon as the weather breaks.

ORIGINAL: apwachholz All - I'm sure by now there are many members of rcuniverse that are familiar with me [img][/img] and my inquiries on various threads. And as is the case, here I am with another topic of discussion. Nothing heated this time (I hope) but, more a curiosity of where your passion for flight came from. I ask the question in the <u>Beginners</u> forum because a wide range of persons visit this section of the forum. From beginners looking for help, to the experienced who are willing to offer advice and assistance. What better location to ask this question then in the forum that stewards the love of rc aviation. So.... why do you love rc aviation? And when did the spark ignite? Or even better yet, if you're new, what sparked your interest? <span style=''color: rgb(51, 51, 153);''>For those who are wondering: It started in 4th grade when I noticed the airliners flying overhead in the country. I wanted to know how they did it, what it felt like, and if I could build an airplane. Rocketry followed, as it was the most affordable solution. And then as a Christmas present to my father years later I got him a Great Planes Spirit 2M glider which I hoped he'd ask me to build; which he did. And from there, I've never stopped loving flight. And I'll always remember my first engine airplane. A Carl Goldberg Eagle 2 (white and maroon paint scheme) with an O.S. .25 FP (that I still have and use) Any type of flying is awesome to me. It's an affliction I love to have.</span> Addl. Side Note: For those wondering why I posted this question, I'm writing an article about what gets rc pilots hooked into rc aviation. |
RE: >Question: Why do you love rc aviation?
31 years travelling all over the world. I started as an avionics tech in the air force. 4 years later I moved to texas and went to work for Braniff. I moved up to the point I was a MaintRep on 727's, 747's, 757's, dc8's. I spent almost 2 years at Gulfstream in Savannah as the Aircraft maint Planning Manager. My last position was as an avionics tech at the US Army Aviation Tech Test Center at Redstone Arsenal. That was Blackhawks and apaches. It was all cool. I am disabled now. Bad knees. I miss the flight line alot. RC is no where near the power trip. But its fun and there are plenty of guys who I can talk to out here who know where I have been. No one else in this town has a clue.

Yes it was a great question! I have enjoyed reading all the posts on this thread. I agree once you get the bug there is no turning back! Last thing I do at night is read one of my RC mags. I drive for a living and think about the planes all the time, Love building and flying!

RE: >Question: Why do you love rc aviation?
I love aviation all around. I'm currently in ground school, and working to get my Private Pilots License, to someday become a commercial airline pilot. There are many famous aerobatic, warbird, vintage, ect pilots that fly RC also. Its just a passion that everyone here shares.

RE: >Question: Why do you love rc aviation?
Not to side track the conversation, but how much longer are you going to wait before marrying that girl Andrew??? I think you two were engaged when I met you two or three years ago!
I sure wouldn't let that one get away! |
RE: >Question: Why do you love rc aviation?
LOL! Nice Mike.... well to keep you in the loop, we got engaged May 1st, 2010 and are set to marry June 18, 2011. So yes, I decided she's a keeper and she decided a lifelong sentence with me and my antics was enjoyable.
Yeah, you don't meet many women who are just as passionate if not more about the same things you are (aviation). |
RE: >Question: Why do you love rc aviation?
Aside from my wife and kids aviation in all forms is my whole life. I have always been fasinated by aircraft even from a young age. A old free flight model my grandfather gave me got me into modeling when I was probably 12 years old. from there I jumped right to RC. I quickly got hooked in the hobby and spent every free minute I had bugging my parents to take me flying. Even the distraction of being a teenager did not dampen my enthusiasm for flight. I was determined to make aviation my life. After I graduated from High school I joined the Air Force and became a C130 engine speciallist. i did that for 8.5 years before finally getting selected as a pilot candidate and went to Officer Training school to become a Second Lieutentant in the Air Force. I am currently going though Pilot training to become a C130 pilot and fly the same planes I used to fix!
Even with my busy life I still make time for my love of RC. For those of you have been the military flight training it is a very demanding time. For me RC flight is a great traing tool for visualizing complex concepts that are a part of full scale aviation. Aside from that RC helps me to decompress from the stress of work and lets me spend some quality time with my oldest son who is an emerging airplane fanatic like me. I have found that the only way I can really clear my mind is by some time at the sticks. RC and full scale flying is much more than a hobby or job to me. It is what I was meant to do and I will continue to fly until I am no longer able. Even then I will find (or make up) a reason to continue in aviation in some way till the day I die! |
RE: >Question: Why do you love rc aviation?
Thank you so much for you service Sir! Flying is therapy, I too have had a love for flight since as far back as I could remember. This is a hobby like no other because it has the best people in it! You went from a hobby to serving our country, And those that are serving has served and will serve are my Hero's! and should be anyone that lives in the USA Hero's!

RE: >Question: Why do you love rc aviation?
For me, it wasn't an initial love affair. I grew up in Vero Beach , Fl and there was a Club that flew behind my house in the orange groves. I would ride my go-cart over and watch, but noone was ever too inviting, so I lost interest. A few years later, I awoke Christmas morning with a Trainer under the tree. My dad had bought it all. We had the world's largest field box, the electic starter, the electric glow starter, electric fuel pump, etc. On Sunday, we showed up at the field with "our gear" only to find most guys had a field box the size of small tackle box; ours had legs! We were introduced to the term "chicken stick", and we learned that a glow starter could be cordless and rechargeable. We weren't too embarrassed, although we looked silly with all our stuff. A few weeks and we had scaled down our gear andhe and I began to learn to fly. After 3weeks Ilanded unassisted for the first time and I was hooked!
My father was solo 2 wks later and we were off and running. I will never forget some of the members looking at us and saying "Thats great you can solo. So what are you building?". My father and I looked puzzled as we already had a plane. We would soon learn that the joyof the flight wouldsometimes be followed by the pain of the crash. Needless to say, my father and I spent many hours together. We began whenI was11 and we flew together until I turned 16 and discovered girls liked a guy with a car. For me,it was always about the flight. No matter what I flew, I wanted to be perfect, smooth, etc.I never enjoyed thebuild....Today, I am getting back into the hobby after a 15+yr hiatus, and I am excited about the build.I can't wait for the kit to arrive and start my "project". Iwill probably still enjoythe flight more, kneesbuckling, fingers shaking during the maiden flight, but I'm glad to be back in the hobby. I missed the smell of the fuel, the early sat/sun morning flights, and look forward to the late evening flights in the summer. I've tried to explain this to my wife, but she doesn't get it.....yet.It'saboutimpressing your peers with your skill, laughing together at your lack of skill, and "oohingand aaahing" at the latest build to arrive at thefield. I love it all!!!!! |
RE: >Question: Why do you love rc aviation?
That is a great story! This is a great father kids grand kids hobby! I love taking my grandsons to the field and just see the excitement in them. My dad never spent really anytime with us he was always working or drinking. I had worked allot while raising my kids had to I was a single dad but spent every min. I had to give to my kids. No going to bars or any where but home after work. I have not drink since 17. So that was not an issue! We spent countless hours together. After they grew up I got back into RC airplanes and my grand kids have been born into the hobby! My kids that I raised was all girls never really interested in the planes! But now getting grandsons that are! If grand daughters are I will teach them as well! This has been such a great thread I have enjoyed reading how many of us as gotten from point A to B

RE: >Question: Why do you love rc aviation?
Gentlemen,
Any of you that have read the blog on my profile page already know my background and interest, but I guess a quick waltz down memory lane is in order: I've always loved aviation, have an Uncle who built and flew models all his life (recently retired from it due to failing eyesight). Had another who owned his own full scale planes, a cousin who taught himself to fly full scale, off the beach and once hooked his landing gear on a pine tree and flew down it to the ground...and lived! To this day, I run out the front or back door every time a plane flies overhead (and I'm in the turning radius for approach to KFLL) I used to walk 7 miles a day in Markham Park and would watch the planes flying as I walked. One day 5 years ago while the runway was being expanded, I walked on down to the airfield pavilion, met a wonderful group of men and the rest is history! They taught me everything from the ground up! As a result, I've had the opportunity to fly some amazing aircraft. I've attended two memorial services of pilots we have recently lost (details of which I can't discuss) that I will never, ever forget. I got involved in the local club and I'm currently in my second term as President. And just last month, the AMA asked to use me in their custom AMA card promotion. This is a fascinating, exciting, nerve wracking and at times hilarious hobby to be in. It's the most addictive thing I've ever done!!!! (I even like the smell of glo fuel) And it's made up of all types of people from all different backgrounds with the common love of the hobby! BTW Mike & Ken....how could you forget.....??? :D:D I AM the chick that flies!!!! [sm=kiss.gif] [sm=kiss.gif] |
RE: >Question: Why do you love rc aviation?
And here was me thinking that 'chick's that flew' was just some kind of urban myth that was banded around just so us guys had even the slightest glint of hope that we'd get to look at something other than each others ugly mugs every Sunday morning ;)

RE: >Question: Why do you love rc aviation?
That is great! It is good to see a lady in this hobby, my daughters would not budge on the hobby when younger but are now showing interest in this great hobby and I will show them your post. They always thought it was only a guy thing. Thanks for sharing your story Bev!

RE: >Question: Why do you love rc aviation?
ORIGINAL: harryangus I like the joke about ''beeing in for the chicks'' because I am new to this but I have been on the field many times and I am yet to see a woman modeler. I have seen women in every other hobby possible. Why do plane modeling don't attract women? We should do something about it. AMA should give a discount to female applicants. Why grown men play with toy airplanes" ...on the other hand, if it attracted women, maybe she would come to the field with me more often....hmmmm |
RE: >Question: Why do you love rc aviation?
BEv, sorry I missed your club's swap meet last time I was down there. I get down to W Palm 2 or 3 times a year and one of these days I'll get down to Markham Park again - Just to meet the "Chick that flies!" :D
