Which servo?
 

I am not sure whether this is the forum for this post but here goes...

I am considering buying servos for my Funtana, Extra 60 size and future 3D airplanes including gas. The possible candidates are below

Futaba S3305 MG (124 oz-in, 0.20 sec/60° at 6V)

Now my question is which of these would be the best. I have intentionally placed the Futaba ones first as my experience with Hitec ones isint that good. But that was with the cheaper hs-311 entry level servos. I have a good stock of 3010s running well (about 5-8 of them) but since I intend to use these on the rudder and elevator, high torque would be preferable?

Also, I wanted to know what are the advantages and disadvantages of metal gear servos if those are preferable

3010 would be my choice out of that list. Good mix of speed and torque.
90oz is plenty strong enough for a 60-90 sized plane, even rudder.

Metal gears are preferred when you get to larger planes and gas engines. The surfaces get large and you can bust plastic gears just by knocking into the surfaces.
The disadvanges are weight and slop. You have to pay a lot more money if you want a good, tight, fast MG servo.

The key word here is future 3D airplanes......the bigger the better.......who knows what you'll fly in the future.....HiTech makes a nice servo HS 5645 MG.....
You'll generally going to want a beefer servo on the rudder...bear that in mind when you buy servos.....
Tis better to have a bigger servo than you need than a smaller one than you need....

Hitec 5645mg are digital servos. They are expensive and I may not really need them. The 645mg is the same servo, only standard.

How about the 3305mg from futaba? Its metal gear and costs almost the same as the 645mg

Of the servos you listed I would go with the 625's or the 645's. In this price range i feel these are about the best servo's. I have found that the 3305 and 3010 futaba servo's have sloppy gear sets and are not very accurate compared to the 625's. If you are willing to spend a little more the hitec 985 is a very good servo that can be used on almost any plane. I feel is one of the best servo's on the market at it's price point.

I use the standard Hitec 645MG on one of my 3D models and I have been very happy with it. The price is good and it is a very durable and smooth servo. It is a good price too.

When I said go bigger, I was thinking for future use....why buy just the size you need now.....and then a possibly beefer servo later? Most folks get bigger airplanes not smaller...

My LHS has a number of 5625MG digital programmable metal gear servos for the same landed price as purchasing any of the listed (3305 or 3152 or 645 or 625) from Tower. Advantage of purchasing at the LHS is that I can return any that dont work properly. I am considering taking that route

If you buy your servos in bulk...usually 5 or more you can get some good deals...Valley view RC, Dawg house, Don's out in Kansas.....even your LHS will usually match those prices

I would go with the Hitec's, IMO they make the best servo's on the market. I have the 645's and the 485's in my H9 twist 60 and they work flawlessly, giving me tons of authority. Even though the digital's are more money, you should consider them if you want to 3D since they're: quicker, stronger, and have their max torque through out the whole range of the servo.
