I have been out of flying for a good 9 years (long story) I am looking to come back. My son and I have put some planes together and I reached the point of radio install. All my old stuff is FM, do I start all over, or move on with the old?

What planes are you talking about?

As far as the FM is concerned, well, depends on their age and if they are "legal" or not. So, what radios do you have? Brands and models.

Where in NJ are you? We have a few clubs down here near Atlantic City.

We have built a.40 size trainer, and working on a Pitts .40, I also have another old trainer which may not be flight worthy. I have two futaba 6ch. FP-T6NFK and a T6YF w/receivers. I am in northwest NJ, used to fly but never solo, I guess I am a slow learner.

I had a Futaba radio 7UAP (20 years) which is still legal. What channel are  you using? I upgraded to a newer 6AX just to have some additional features operating on channel 52. Haven't gone 2.4  yet. I'm one of the few members at my club who still has to pin a channel. The only other person is out at the field one day on 72mhz and we're both on the same channel.

There is nothing wrong with the 72 MhZ stuff so long as it is narrow banded and dual conversion. That is almost anything produced after 1991. These radios were the cat's meow right up until the 2.4 stuff came on the market and now some of the guys who push 2.4 say that the 72 stuff is suddenly junk. Not so. Some people actually prefer 72 to 2.4. You can get into long and heated arguments about the merits of the two, but the truth of the matter is that the 72 stuff was fabulous before the 2.4 stuff appeared and it still works just fine.

As long as your radio is gold stickered and passes range check, it's good to use. I'd definitely get new batteries though.
