Fuel Soaked Balsa
 

The fuel stopper on my tank, came loose during a flight and spilled fuel all over the fuselage and the foam around the receiver was soaked. What can I do to save the soaked through (but now dry) balsa & do you think the receiver will still be ok? Someone suggested using K2R spot lifter for the balsa.

KLR is one of the best solution to being fuel soaked.. Then if need be Brush on epoxy or Epoxy paint will help any future problems.... But you will need to remember. CA hates model fuel and to thougherly check all effected area's. This problem is not uncommon ... but, Fuel proofing is prevention. No model is worth risking.... Larry

To keep your Rx and Battery safe, after wrapping in foam, put them in a plastic bag, and seal it with tape. Might be a good idea for the fuel tank also.

Hate to ask a dumb question, but what is KLR or K2R spot lifter? Where would i get that at? Didnt see anything like that at the hobby shop.

You will be hard pressed to find it....it took us 2 weeks trailing around the stores but we eventually found ONE last sample in Kroger.

You spray it on to the effected area, leave it for a while then simply wipe the dusty residue away.

I get K2R at both Walmart and the larger grocery stores (Albertsons, Reasors, Homeland/Safeway). Kmart used to have it but I haven't looked for it there in 3 or 4 years.

Yup I'll chime in on the K2R also, have used it on planes that I have personally fuel soaked and on ones I've bought at auction that I later found had some fuel soaked balsa when re-doing the covering. Works well, smells a little bad though - would suggest ventilation.

this happened to me with my Avistar. I used K2R on the wood and replaced the foam. Plane still flies fine. The tail section is now a little warped and twisted.

I no longer use the crappy tanks supplied with most ARF planes.

If you cant find K2R, try filling the area affected with kitty litter and let is set for awhile. It will absorb most of the oil. Heating the area with your heat gun will also speed up the oil absorbing ability. After you have gotten all the oil out you can, try coating the area with any alphatic resin glue before reattaching the covering. Just put on as thin a coat as possible (spread it out with your fingers), let it dry, then recover.

I asked for some of that K2R or KR2 as my wife said it was called (who am i to argue?) . She looked but couldnt find and bought some Clorox spot remover dust, I will try that as well at Cat litter, we got plenty o' that. The heating idea sounds good too. I will try all these ideas and let you know what worked. I am also going to check Kroger for the K2R (i couldnt find it at Wal-Mart). Many thanks for the advice. K2R is a fabric stain remover for clothing, and I generally find it at most supermarkets in the same aisle as the laundry soaps, bleaches, etc.
