Going from Electric to Glow Fuel
 

Hey Everybody, I been Flying a electric for about 2 years now and I haven't had any crashes worse than landing off runway, but with no damage, Im thinking Im ready to go to a Glow Fuel Plane, what do u think would be a good plane to start with but wouldn't cost more than $150 to get up and flying!!!

Maybe just for the airframe...

Even a cheap trainer will run you 80.00 just for the airframe w/o engine, electronics, servos, etc.

By the time you have everything together you are more realistically looking at closer to $250.00 to do things on the cheap.

You can go with an inexpensive but sporty airframe like this:

But these are sort of oriented to someone who has experience putting together Balsa/Wood ARFs.

If you lack that experience consider something like this...

You can use standard servos for either, whatever receiver you want... and an inexpensive engine like one of these

As a bigger to glow engines, you might be better off with an O.S. engine as they are very easy to tune....

But you'll pay more for them and you'll easily break your budget...

Charger ( your DX charger will charge the plane's pack just fine... )

Chicken Stick or electric starter

Fuel can fittings
Fuel Pump

Any sort of cheap restraint... ( I'm using a big old screwdriver, and a thick cloth webbing belt with a clip as a restraint... )

As you can see you are not going to be able to pull this off for $150.00

Just pointing it out for the two nit pickers that couldn't figure out he was asking about glow fuel.:eek: OP pretty much put it all together for you. $150.00 even for a trainer isn't going to get you much. Tower used to have a complete system you could buy. I haven't looked for them in a lot of years but I think the system was about $250.00 but things have gone up in price over the years. Support gear is as much as most planes. When I first started flying I bought a lot of used gear but I had a back ground in airplanes, just not RC so I managed to get some good deals and didn't get burned on buying crap.
There, spell and type check said I did OK, that doesn't happen very often.;)

This is the combo gray beard is referring to. It is the Tower Trainer 40 RTF. It's $279 and comes with the plane, engine, and radio. I've trained a lot of pilots on this plane and it's a good package. However, the bad news is that they are temporarily unavailable on Tower Hobbies.

OP, if you get Phoenix in your area, you could save some money. They are good, the Phoenix models, just there isint too much choice in that make. The trainer will come for $80 or less though.

With regards to other equipments, if you are member of a flying club, you wont require to buy them. You can easily borrow a wrench, hex wrenches etc and the electric starter for staring your engines from your neighbours on the field. You will need a TX, RX, Servos, some extension & y-cables, engine, ARF and a booster and ofcourse fuel. In fact, you can carry all the stuff you need (other than the airplane) in a backpack. Thats what I did for the first 2 years and still do today when transportation is not available

It seems a lot of the typical high wing trainers are out of stock at most places at the time.  However, if you have progressed enough to handle a low wing trainer type of plane...here is a good deal, cheap!

I know NP has gotten a lot of bad press on the webs...but I have bought quite a bit of stuff from them over the past year and the cost savings has been well worth any issues I have had with them.  And the only issues I have really had is some damaged plane parts that has always been replaced.  Maybe not as quickly as I would like (still waiting on a wing half for my giant Cub)...but anyway, you are wanting cheap, right?

If you've been flying for 2 yrs you'd have no trouble flying the Twist 40. Very stable flies on a rail type plane. Comes with the hardware for both glow and electric. Mine is a 5 yr. old electric. A buddy has one with an OS 46FX and they are well matched in performance. Just start off with half the contol throws till you get a handle on it. Very good plane as a stepup from a high winger because of its rock solid stability. Cool thing is, if you don't like it as glow, not hard to convert to electric.

Just checked the website and it's been discontinued, but if you can find one in a hobby shop, grab it. Dug a little deeper and they have a version 2 so here you go.

Build would denote a kit, is that what your looking for?? As pointed out, your making this a guessing game. Cheap kits but good plane, look at the tower up-roar or any of the fun fly types. If you can locate a computer you can do a search all by yourself and see what is out there that you would like.:eek:

If you have flown for 2 years as you are saying and want to upgrade to a good glow airplane, a Twist or Uproar (for something in the fun-fly category) would be ideal for you. ARF or Kiye you decide. These "3D starters" have very easy slow speed handling so you can get out quickly when you get into trouble. Also, the thick wings resist overspeeding. Believe me, the slow flying will really improve your flying and trying out 3D moves will improve your reactions. Both will help you in the future

What radio do you have? If its a decent one, you could just use it for your glow plane. If you have park receivers, you'd want to get a full range receiver, but if you have a full range already you're all set.

If you're looking to stay under $150, I'd try finding a used one at a swap meet or something (or in the classifieds here or on RCG). You can find all sorts of great deals on planes. I bet you could find a nice .40 sized sport plane in that price range.

Though don't forget you have to get the support equipment, fuel, fuel pump, glow plug igniter, starter, etc. But again, a lot of that you could find at a swap meet.

RDS8000 radio, plus servos
a fedgling electric plane (about 52" wingspan)
TT.25 glow engine (unknown if it will start yet) donated
.25 size uglystick clone arf, also donated
On loan from me (dad) all necessary support equipment to operate a glow engines.

I think the uglystick might be a good choice except that it is so small and might be twitchy.

Would love to get him something cheap in the .60 size range including the engine. (maybe if he cleaned his room and did chores to earn the $):)

What is WRONG with "Mini" servos?

Many higher torque Mini servos produce more power than a standard full size servo.

I often replace standard servos with Mini servos on 30-50 size planes to help make the plane lighter w/o any performance penalty.

Are you confusing Mini's with Micro servos?

Sticks are excellent planes and a .25 is certainly large enough to learn on. Just go for it...
