what do I call it

Boy a dumb question from a dumb person. I need the mounting wing blocks for putting landing gear in the wing. Just a 3/4" X 4" block with a groove down the center and a hole for the landing gear to fit into. I can go to the LHS but boy they think I am really dumb not knowing what to call it. So, I post it here because you don't know who I am and I won't know if you think I am stupid.:D:D:D:D I have tried to search it but nothing comes up. I guess just having a senior moment at present. [&o][&o][&o] Thanks for the input ;);)

National Balsa calls it "grooved landing gear mounts." Oh ya, they also sell it.

"Grooved gearblocks?"

Or, you could hand them a drawn schematic, saynothingand they'll think you're an engineer. http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/js/f...wink_smile.gif

RE: what do I call it

I named mine Bob but if you ask one of those people behind the counter at Hobby People they know them as landing gear blocks.OOOORRR you can make up your own like I do. A table saw blade is 1/8 inch wide, Ripppppp, move the guide over a bit and RIPPPPPPP. You can make your own with any number of wire widths and depths. I make it up in several feet lengths and cut as needed. A Table Saw is your friend.
Your going to ask what kind of wood I use aren't you?? Well, I go into the corner of the wood shop where there is a lot of scrap wood and look for any hardwood that I think is light enough. Red Oak is always in the corner but not the best thing to use. I don't care what make and model of wood it is as long as it will do the job. If I'm cutting the blocks for a wing that has an angle to it that table saw blade can also cut angles, the blocks don't need to be square.
I also cut my own stringers. I dazzle the guys in the shop when I start cutting 3/16X1/8 stringers in 10 foot lengths. Not all wings use a 36 or 42 inch stringer so I cut as needed.

That's a muckempluckem board with a frizzledadoodlag groove in it. Too bad your LHS guys couldn't figure out what a freaking landing gear block was from your description. Some of the guys in mine aren't capable of doing anything but looking up a part number for an ARF part or getting boxes off of shelves. If you ask them to be creative or actually solve a problem, they look at you like you're speaking Greek.

My local Hobby???? store is really cars and buggies only. Went to national balsa but you have to place a 25.00 order pluse 17.00 shipping. Didn't think I wanted to spend that much for the doo-dadds.[:@]

Just print out the pic from the web, give it to the wife and tell her you need two the next time she is near the hobby shop.
Problem Solved

Bet the shipping would be less than the gas.

I don't get over to that side of town too often, even though the Hobbytown here in town closed last November.

you got that right on the shipping-seeing I drive a 4w pick-up. But what the heck, I get 10 miles to the gallon

RE: what do I call it

It is really simple to make them yourself. All you need is to buy some hardwood and use a dremel with a tile cutter tool and cut to depth and length as required for your application. A lot cheaper as well. Then use the nylon brackets to attach the gear as usual.

I usually after cutting the blocks to fit, install the 2 gear wires and then use 5 or 15 minute epoxy and place that around the landing gear.

Buy some hardwood either at the LHS or home depot etc. Take a dremel and a tile cutter tool with cage and make your own. You can use the tile cutter as a poor man's DADO and drill the block for the landing gear wire exit. Install the nylon clamps as usual and then fill the gear space with 5 to 15 minute epoxy.

Even if you go there it doesn't mean they will have the blocks in stock. Just make them/it up yourself and you will have them on hand as needed.Even if you don't have a table saw you must have a neighbor with one.
