Avistar + OS40FP+Grass Field

Hello

Let me start by saying, What a great site! At the moment I have a MDS 40 mounted on my plane which has been very agravating. I spend more time tuning than flying. I have done a search on this subject and it looks like its been covered many times. My Avistar, BTW, has been repaired from a crash which was caused from my batteries. So it's a little heavier now. My ? is will the OS 40 Fp (which was given to me) have enough power to fly the plane from a grass field?

You're repair shouldn't have added more than an ounce or two. Sure the engine will still be enough. It helps if the grass is cut short and your wheels are 3" or bigger.

Shouldn't be a problem. Thats a good engine.

Thanks for the quick response, Tom. I think my wheels are 2.5" or 2.75". It took off fine when the MDS was running, but there has been too many deadsticks by my instructor for me to learn landings. So i figured I would give the OS a try.

Thanks again.

MDS by the way stands for "Many Dead Sticks"

Grass

I have the Avistar with an os40 and have no problem taking off in the grass. Even when it is a little tall the only problem comes when cleaning the chopped up grass from the underside.

I'm also new to the hobby and if you haven't tried a simulator yet I would recommend trying one. I used Realflight daily for a month and landed 3 times solo on my first day of flying. It is also alot of fun when it's raining out.

I own 3 OS 40 FP's and they're extremely reliable engines. I started with a Great Planes PT40 and it flew well with the little FP, so I'd imagine your Avistar should be okay.

Thanks for all the replies. I haven't had a chance to try out the OS, but it is mounted and ready to go at the first chance I do get.(hopefully this afternoon). I fired the engine off yesterday and it sure is lot more quiet than the MDS is. It seems to be a very smooth running engine. More flying than tuning is what Im after.
Thanks again everyone.
