One of those days
 

:(Well, its been a great weekend for flying here in PA. Loaded up the Twist 60, Giant PT 19, PA addiction, Typhoon, MS mustang (foamy) and headed for the field. There was a about 10 - 15 mph crosswind. Almost didn't fly, but decided the mustang would be first up. Not enough prop on it for the wind. Once the wind took it, I tried and to get it back, tried it until it became a small spec and just chopped the throttle. Should've told me something. No real damage. Next flight was with my GP PT 19. 26cc gaser that handles the wind pretty good. Flew great, nosed over though after landing. Wind got under the tail and just pushed it over, No damage done. Next flight was with the Twist 60. Tuned the engine, taxied out took off and it dead sticked as soon as I left the ground. Got her down harrier style level, but it folded the landing gear out. Looks like a low rider now. and nothing broke!!! Then I decided on one more flight with the PT 19. I knew before I took off that I should've just packed it all up. While coming in for final. I let her get too slow. Stalled BAMM!! cracked completely in half. Clean break though. Oh well, gives me an excuse to recover it, and something to do over the winter, definitely repairable. For the Twist 60, I've had it with the Super Tiger 90 engine. Never consistant it seems, and it's a real brick on the front of the Twist 60. Need to find another engine (smaller) for it I Think, something like maybe a OS 65 AX. Hope everyone else had a better day at the field.

Hey Bill. Welcome home.

Way back when, I had a Goldberg Classic Skylark 56. I had an OS 52 Surpass four stroke on it. It flew just great for me.. when there wasn't any wind. I didn't have enough experience to know the difference so I put it up one day with similar winds as you described, however, the wind was fairly straight down the runway. I flew it as i would a trainer, came in on final and chopped the throttle thinking I would glide it on in for a landing.

Well, that's not what happened. The wind was strong enough to lift the plane up and over and upside down for a moment. I managed to get it upright but I kept trying to fly it back, but the more I tried, the further it got. Little did I realize at the time that I forgot to open up the throttle. Oops.. to much of a brain load at the time for a novice like I was then. It continued flying away from me until I tried to turn it again, and over it went, spiraled down into the ground.

There wasn't enough left to salvage, unfortunately.. it was a complete pile of scrap.

I was not going to fly that day because of the wind, but I said, what the hey.. what can go wrong.. the wind is favorable.

Yeah, that crash really shook my confidence. I've been flying for almost 4 years, it should not have happened. Almost decided to sell everything and stick to playing rock n roll. I didn't stop flying after the crash. I put my PA addiction up right after the crash. Got it in the air on normal rates. Then flipped the switch to high rates. Then things went wrong again. I was having a hell of time controlling the plane. I didn't understand why, as it is usually a perfect flying plane, even in the wind. As it became a small spec on the horizon, I figured out that I had hit the flapron switch when I hit the dual rate swtich. I flipped it off and got the addiction back over the run way. It was just a very rough day for me. Felt like I had climbed Suribachi and planted a flag at the end of the day!:D:D

I know what you mean.

I took off last week on a windy day, once I was
up I realized how windy it was at 100' . Three
approaches later I got her down safely,packed up
and called it a day.

OMG, bad day, first off, I check three weather forecast before going to the field. If winds are more than 13-15mph I stay at the simulator.
Secondly if I crash (or near crash) once I pack up and either go home or watch someone else play with the wind.
I guess thats why I was at USAF and not at the marines:(

Yeah, I usually do to, but I figured that this past weekend will be the last warm weekend in our neck of the woods. I also figure if I can learn to fly in that kind of wind, then I will be able to fly more often. I know bigger and heavier is better in the wind. but when you do go down, you do just that go down! But I will have it looking better than ever, it actually needed to be recovered anyway. The PA addiction actually flies pretty good for such a light plane in the wind. I'm disabling the flaprons, don't really need them anyway. I was using them for harriers and such but really not needed.

Where I live (SoCal Mojave Desert) you either learn to fly in the wind or you don't fly at all. There are usually only a couple of hours early in the morning where you don't have wind - if you're lucky.

That's why I hate all those damn switches on radios. Flip the wrong one and it can make for a REALLY interesting flight!

I might just finish fixing my Venus II and take it out this weekend... yeah, weather permitting.

I broke the rudder.. hanger rash sort of stuff, so I'll check the weather forecast, fix the rudder, re-charge all batts, then head on out. The Venus is a pretty good flyer in the wind, so I'll see how much over 10 mph it is.. :D

Yeah, weather looks the same here. Just need something to fly!! :D Ordered a 55 AX for a NIB Morris Hobby 40 size profile. I have it all together but the engine. Doubt it will be here by the weekend. It should be a blast to fly with the 55 AX!

Yep, disabled the flaperons last night! Never thought of it before, but it is way too close to the elevator dual rate switch. The Elevator switch is the one I use to activate dual rates for all control surfaces.

Don't mind flying with the wind straight down the runway, but hate flying with a cross wind. It was all really my fault. Should've never happened, Lack of stick time is my biggest culprite, especailly in the wind.

Oh, I LOVE flying with the wind straight down the runway. When it is like that, depending on the force, I will come in at a speed about 10 mph above (guesstimate) the wind, right into it, so that there is sufficient lift, then come in with it right in front of me. I slow it down to a point where it looks like it's hovering but parallel to the ground, like a helicopter, then land it. Now THAT's HOVERING!!!!
