Just a question

If I am going to cut a foam wing and the rib profile is 2 1/8" and I have to laminate 2 pcs of foam together, what kind of glue should I use for that. What happens when the hot wire comes to the glue joint? I have visions of the wire stopping at the glue joint and just burning ridges in the foam. What say ye, merry men of RCU?

RE: Just a question

Is the wing symmetrical?
If the glue is on the line you can cut either side and sand off the ridge. The wire will stop at the glue no matter what you use in my experience!

Tough question, you are breaking new ground. I would try a light mist of spray contact glue on both halves. The wire should burn though it ok

Yes it is. maybe then I can put the glue line on on the center line of the rib. Is that kinda what you are suggesting? I think that might work. OK that make sense to me. Now what kind of glue should I use to put the two pieces of foam together? So I guess I will be working with a 4" piece of foam when I am ready to cut.

I would probably take High Plains suggestion. Use a weak contact adhesive while cutting the wing, then come back with foam CA or UHU to permanantly glue the parts together. I've found UHU film & foil to be the best foam glue so far. It doesn't get brittle like CA, stays slightly flexible.

Each half of the wing will be approx. 36" seems like a lot of CA. Unless I mis-understand where the CA is going. Must be another way. What about epoxy or gorilla glue. The wing is for a SeaDancer. It looks alot like a SeaMaster.

What I did with a symmetrical wing was to glue two blocks together with Gorilla glue, weight down and let sit overnight.

When I cut the blocks to shape (The outside dimensions of the block itself), the wire did snag at the glue joint, but these were only the straight cuts. You can just go slow and wait for it to cut its way through.

Since the glue joint ran through the centers of the rib templates, the wire never came in contact while cutting the airfoil.

If you want to, you can plan ahead and keep the glue 1/2" or so away from the sizing cuts so the blocks are onlt glued at the wing areas.

Love it. I knew Mike would come through with some pictures. Well off to the store to get some gorilla (or as Warbirdguy says) monkey glue. Thanks
