RE: First plane, which servos?

Just my thoughts:  If you know you are getting into this hobby for the long term, starting with a good transmitter is a great idea.  You mentioned that you want to keep the trainer around if it doesn't get too damaged during the learning process.  In that case, I wouldn't spend much on high end servos.  Get some that are adequate and you will keep in that plane.  If you get high end servos, you will be tempted to put them in your next plane and have to replace these with another set, leading to unnecessary radio setup.  I don't intend to start any engine arguments here; I knew from the moment I read the LA that someone was going to criticize it (again, no disrespect intended to the poster above me; we all have our experiences and opinions).  I think you will be fine with the LA, less frustration in tuning and it will run fine.  Although, I only have experience with the 40 la, but it never died on me in the air, always started easily and idled/transitioned fine.  I have a new found respect for bushed/airbleed idle engines after spending way too much time and fuel in the last couple of months trying to tweak the transition of two of my engines with a low speed needle.  The bushed engines just seem to always run.<div>

Fed... I am looking forward to meeting you at the field. I will be there Saturday, My name is Sandy.

Hey Sandy, my name is Jordan! Im bummed i wont be there there on Saturday, its looking like right after the new year for me. BTW, i saw your posts on Miramars website about your T-34....BEAUTIFULL!!!!

widlifeguy: I figure $40 for 4 servos isnt bad. Thats why i wana get some that are adequate and reliable so that i can just leave those servos in the plane and have it always ready to go. When i get into wardbirds down the road then i will spend the extra dough on better servos.

I will second the HS-422/425 recommendation. I used them in my trainer a long time back and despite a couple crashes and hard landings, they performed brilliantly. Only on the trainer's last crash which made me write it off, one of the HS-422's stripped an inner gear which was replaced cheaply.

Back to the original question, i decided to get the Hitec HS-425BB, for $12.99 a piece plus a little discount for ordering 4 at a time(and other stuff of course) its not a bad deal.
Have you ordered them already? It sounds like you might have. I was going to say, I have a Towerhobbies coupon code for $10 off a $50 order, if you're interested.

RE: First plane, which servos?

This is what I learned and take it for what it's worth. Most if not all manufactures in the RC industry sell; good ,better and best products. Servos are no exception. The industry leaders in our hobby are JR and Futaba. They both sell a full range of servos and provide the necessary data for the modeler to make choices from. If you belong to a club find out what others are using for their applications and purchase the same. If the majority fly on one particular brand of radio that is what you should purchase. By doing so when help is required, that is radio related, it is available from another club member. I noticed that most of the replies came from people using Hitech servos which are nothing but clones of JR and Futaba sold at a lower cost and that's fine by me but the quality and relability are not the same. When I worked in the aerial target industry we purchased nothing but Hitech servos because they were cheap and considered a throw away item.

The 46LA is just fine for a trainer plane, that's what I had in mine. I bought an Aurora 9 when I got my second plane, kicking myself for wasting money on a 4 channel for my trainer. That said depending on your next plane look at the HS-5495BH servos. I put some in a Revolver with an Optima 6 RX this summer. They are HV so you can run everything off a 2S lipo pack without a voltage regulator. I have a single 2s lipo I use for an RX pack and just drop it in whatever plane i want to fly that day. The next year I buy a new pack for $5 for that season just to be safe.

I have a Tower Trainer 40, similar to the Superstar 40. So similar, that when I need new landing gear or wheels I substitute the Superstar 40 set. I use standard futaba servos 3004 ( i believe), ST-40GS. Pulls it along fine for a trainer.

Enjoy.

I use the Hitec HS425BB in all my 40 and 60 size planes, never had a problem, they are very durable servos. I bought a box of 20 and got a great deal, they are on E-Bay now in a box of 15 for $135, add in the shipping costs and it comes out to $10.20 apiece (if my math is right) if you want some spares for future projects.

Fed4life  I am going to give it to you strait.<div>If your simining now.
<div>After 10 flights on your trainer you will be ready for a low wing. Asking yourself , why did I buy a trainer in the first place??</div></div><div>Than after another  ugly plane you will lose confindence in yourself, and buy yet another low ugly (non dream)low wing plane and lose all that money that could be used on the dream.  </div><div>I Know there are a lot of people that disagree with me. But the simulator is the new trainer for today! </div><div>Why cant your next plane be a 40 size , Of what you want, than the dream???</div>

RE: First plane, which servos?

"An LA 40 is a really good 25" that has been said here fairly often. The 46 LA is a decent motor for a LIGHT trainer. LAs are easy to run and worth having on some planes. BUT I agree with spending the bucks for the best you can afford. Thats the advice I got years ago. I still have my first RC engine. It is an OS 40 ABC FSR and have replaced the bearings in it once, it runs just as good as new.

You'll get LOTS of opinions here and thats good. But a standard trainer is still a good idea. Few new RC flyers MASTER a trainer. However your gear will transfer to a lot of other kind of planes easy 'nuff when you want to move up. I have been flying more than 20 years and I still keep a trainer in the hanger. ( not necasarilly a stock trainer though):D

I can't say enough about my .46 LA and Ialso used HS-311s right out of the gate with my trainer to keep costs down. Ihave never been let down by either, ever. Plenty of choices to make out there for sure!

I have also used the 422s and mistakenly bought some 475s once and ended up using them on the flaps of a small warbird. I'm sure guys have had their fair share of problems but I am not afraid to put Hitecs in my upper end equipment.
